Refinery29a day ago
The U.S. Open is a few weeks away, meaning there's still some time to put together some seasonal looks. Whether you're headed to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York or hosting a watch party at home, the vibe is preppy — and no, not Gen Z's hoodie-and-jeans interpretation (sorry, friends!). We mean Y2K prep: polos, pleats, tennis skirts, and tennis bracelets.
Preppy and tennis have long been linked, and tenniscore brings that classic, sporty aesthetic back with a feminine spirit to it all. You've probably seen it all over Pinterest and reimagined by some of your fave celebs and content creators — from Kali Uchis ' mami chula looks to Sarita Cuervo 's sporty-cute fits — everyone seems to want to look court-ready without breaking a sweat.
Tenniscore works because it's effortlessly chic. It's easy to wear, versatile, and feminine and it's comfortable and appropriate whether courtside or curbside. These 15 Latine-owned brands are putting their own spin on the trend, merging classic prep with their expressive Latin American roots.

U.S. Open Announces Highest Player Compensation In Tennis History

The United States Tennis Association announced that the 2025 U.S. Open will offer the largest purse in tennis history, being the first tennis event to reach $90 million in total player compensation. This amount tops the total $75 million in 2024, the previous highest purse in tennis history, an increase of 20 percent. Men's and women's singles champions at the 2025 U.S. Open will earn $5 million, up 39 percent from the $3.6 million in 2024, making it the largest winning payout in the sport. The Open runs Aug. 18-Sept. 7. In addition to the increase for the champions in the singles Main Draw, finalists ($2.5 million, an increase of 39 percent), semifinalists ($1.26 million, an increase of 26 percent), quarterfinalists ($660,000, an increase of 25 percent) and Round of 16 competitors ($400,000, an increase of 23 percent) will all see substantial growth. This follows years of a strategic focus on redistribution to the early rounds and Qualifying Tournament to provide meaningful payouts to all players. Men's and women's doubles purses also are significantly increased in an effort to support the players competing in these championships, up 23 percent to $4.78 million from $3.89 million in 2024. For the first time ever, the winning teams from the Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships will earn $1 million in prize money. The Men's and Women's Qualifying tournaments' prize money will increase to a record $8 million, up 10 percent for this year. In addition to prize money, as has been the case in recent years, the US Open has made an effort to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses for all competitors in all professional Main Draw and Qualifying events. All players will receive a travel stipend of $1,000, as well as two hotel rooms in the official player hotel (or $600 per day if the player chooses to lodge at another accommodation), resulting in $5 million in overall support. In addition, players will receive free racquet stringing of up to five racquets per round. Novak Djokovic, who has career earnings of nearly $200 million and works with the PTPA to advocate for players, said in 2023: 'I'm fine for this life and many other lives. We all definitely want to see a change at the base level because the 150th player on the planet struggles and often has to travel without a coach. People don't realize how expensive this sport is.' Chase for FedEx Cup top 50 is in on — and Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark have work to do

Keegan Bradley had his bags packed in his Memphis hotel room and was resigned to the fact that his 2024 FedEx Cup run was over. But he had his TV tuned to the live tournament coverage, his phone on the PGA Tour app's live scoring and his iPad streaming a featured hole. Still, he couldn't believe how the stars aligned perfectly for him. Or rather, how things came crashing down for Tom Kim, who finished bogey, double bogey, double bogey at TPC Southwind, dropping from 46th to 51st in the FedEx Cup standings and allowing Bradley to sneak in at No. 50. 'At the last minute, I texted my caddie, 'Dude, I think we're going to finish in the top 50. I don't see how we don't,' ' recounted Bradley, who hitched a ride to the next event with fellow pro Billy Horschel. 'I went to Denver with this real big sense of relief.' Bradley exhaled, and everything changed. He had guaranteed his entry into all eight signature events this season, while Kim was admitted into none. The following week? Bradley won the BMW, made his way to Atlanta for the Tour Championship, finishing T-21, and even parlayed his late-season success into a captain's pick for the U.S. Presidents Cup team. Such is the fine line that exists on the PGA Tour. Spieth, Clark, Lee teetering on top 50 While 70 players qualified for the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, everyone is hoping to pull a Keegan Bradley because the magic number this week is 50 – that's how many players will survive and advance to the BMW Championship, and, more importantly, secure all eight signature events in 2026. Some notable pros are under the gun to produce this week, including three-time major winner Jordan Spieth at No. 48 in the FedEx Cup standings, 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, who enters the week at No. 49, and the 'Bubble Boy,' Min Woo Lee at 50. Spieth played last week in hopes of improving his position, but finished T-31 at the Wyndham Championship and only treaded water. He knows he's in for a stressful week and that he has work to do to avoid missing the BMW for a second straight year. 'I didn't like asking for exemptions this year at all. I was fortunate to receive a lot of them, but you just never know,' he said. 'And when you miss out on elevated events, the way it's structured, they've got the best players in the world at all of them and you don't want to miss any of them.' Clark is in the same boat. Since missing the cut at the U.S. Open, he has climbed from No. 80 to No. 49. He's finished T-17 or better in four of his last five starts, and his T-4 at the British Open was his best result of his season. Clark also has positive vibes at TPC Southwind, where he finished T-7 last year. He'll need no worse than to finish 68th this week and still has positioning for East Lake on his mind plus Ryder Cup hopes to play for too. Australia's Lee sits on the bubble at No. 50 and his game has been ice cold since his win at the Children's Hospital Houston Open in late March. He missed the cut at the last three majors and has failed to record a top 10 since his win. Poston, Finau among those looking to climb Among those on the outside looking in are J.T. Poston, who has qualified for the BMW in each of the last three years, starts the week at No. 51. He's only recorded one top-10 finish all season and his seven top 25s are his fewest since 2020-21. Tony Finau at No. 60 is looking to stretch his streak of eight straight trips to East Lake for the Tour Championship, but he has work to do, as does Rickie Fowler at No. 64, who needs no worse than a T-17 finish. 'Good golf solves a lot of things,' he said. And that's what it takes to make it this far and beyond. 'It's becoming as challenging as ever to qualify for the playoffs and then BMW and Tour Championship, so, it's truly the best fields we can get in terms of who has played the best over the course of the whole season and I'm ready to get going,' said Justin Thomas, who enters the week at No. 5 in the standings. By Sunday, some players will rise to the occasion, others will benefit from some Keegan Bradley-like luck, and inevitably, there will be a player who experiences a Tom Kim-like meltdown. Last week, that player was Keith Mitchell, who made a 4-putt double bogey and missed a 7-foot putt on his final hole during the second round of the Wyndham Championship to miss the cut. He failed to make it to Memphis, but he succeeded in summing up how it hurts to come up just short of a season-long goal. "Gave it my all this year, probably too much, loads of pressure on myself to make the playoffs and top 50,' he said. 'We fight and fight and grind to give it our all and to finish like that is really just heartbreaking."

How Hardy L Pelt and Todd F Brown are Rewriting Black-Owned Media Broadcasting with Urban Edge Network

In a media landscape still dominated by legacy networks and monopolized narratives, Urban Edge Network (UEN) is changing the channel, literally and figuratively. Co-founded by industry veterans Hardy L. Pelt and Todd F Brown, UEN is a Black-owned sports broadcasting and ad tech company on a transformational mission to amplify underrepresented voices, build real commercial equality, and most importantly, put live sports content from underserved institutions on the national and global stage. Together, Pelt and Brown have spearheaded the path for inclusion, while redefining what ownership, access, and innovation look like in sports media. 'We're a Black-owned media company, yes, and that's something we take great pride in,' says Pelt, a seasoned sports executive whose exciting career began in 1988 as a ball boy and equipment manager for the Orlando Magic. 'But we're also an ad-tech company. Everything we broadcast is free to watch. We're monetizing through advertisements, not subscriptions.' From his early experience in locker room access, Pelt rose to become Vice President of Corporate Sales and Services for the Golden State Warriors. His path has been driven by corporate expertise and community passion, especially for HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), which he realized were being left behind at a time when media pivoted to ad-driven tech. Witnessing this became the catalyst for UEN's genesis. 'What I found was that the HBCUs were still operating in a 1960s revenue model. Meanwhile, the ad industry has moved far beyond that,' Pelt exclaims. What began as a collective effort to empower Black institutions with greater media representation has grown into something much broader, and importantly, more powerful. UEN now holds broadcasting licenses across predominantly white institutions, along with partnerships with HBCUs and the Texas Legends in the NBA G League. 'The beauty of sports,' Pelt says, 'is that it transcends race, color, and creed. It's a great unifier. And as a media company, that belief has enabled us to look beyond those barriers and stand united.' But even with a strong vision and momentum, the path forward wasn't without friction. Pelt recalls the difficult early days, 'There were many hurdles along the way, and we often faced trouble connecting with people who couldn't see what we had to offer. But that wasn't going to stop me. I just needed a better way to reach out to them.' And quickly, everything began to shift when Pelt was introduced to Todd Brown. 'I didn't know him. Looked him up online, I spoke to him briefly, telling him about my visions, and almost immediately, he started finishing my sentences,' Pelt says. 'He was the first person I met who completely understood the problem and had the experience to help solve it. It was the perfect fit.' Much like Pelt, Brown also brings a formidable experience to the table. He was the former VP at a multinational media conglomerate, former Chairman of the American Diabetes Association, and co-creator of TheGrio, a news publication focusing on African American stories. With deep roots in television broadcasting and empowering black communities, Brown brought a layer of media strategy and infrastructure knowledge that matched Pelt's marketing and sales expertise. 'We complement each other,' says Pelt. 'I'm the facilitator, the one out there building relationships and knocking on doors. Todd's the counsel, I call him when I hit a wall, and he gives me the insight I need. That's why it works.' Together, they've built UEN into a thriving Black-owned streaming network in the country, delivering over 2,000 live and on-demand sporting events each year. And they're not stopping there. What began as a grassroots push for media equality in Black college athletics is on its way to becoming a global platform for underrepresented sports and stories. The company is now setting its sights on international expansion, starting with soccer in the Middle East. 'When I took the blinders off, I realized this isn't just about Black schools,' Pelt shares. 'It's about any athlete, any team, any community that's not being seen. That's the real market. That's where we're going.' Aside from offering sensational sports programming, UEN's model offers schools and conferences visibility with real economic return through advertising, branded content, and programmatic monetization. But its larger mission is just as vital, if not more. 'When you see UEN,' Pelt shares, 'I want you to see the best of a people, the best of a country, and hopefully the best that people can achieve. I want everyone, Black, white, whoever, to be proud of what two guys came together and built, and hopefully that motivates somebody to do what their vision is in life.'
