Caught on camera: Mechanic pleads guilty to stealing woman's underwear in Ipoh
IPOH, May 13 — A mechanic was charged in the Magistrate's court here for stealing a 46-year-old woman's underwear last week.
Sin Kim Fatt, 48, pleaded guilty to the charge, which was read in Mandarin before magistrate Siti Nora Shariff.
Sin was accused of stealing the underwear from the woman's house on Lorong Kledang Timur 15A, Bandar Baru Menglembu, Menglembu here at 11.23am on May 6.
He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which provides for a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.
Sin's act was allegedly captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), showing the suspect riding a motorcycle, stopping in front of the house and stealing undergarments that the victim had hung on the gate to dry.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Monisha Pandey appeared for the prosecution, while Sin was represented by lawyer Nurul Syuhada Mohd Yusof from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
Monisha requested the sentencing to be postponed pending presentation of the case facts and sentencing submission.
She also proposed bail be set at RM7,000.
However, Nurul appealed for a lower amount, saying that Sin earns a low income of RM2,000 a month, and has five children — one still in school and another who is disabled.
The court set bail at RM1,500 with one surety and fixed May 30 for mention.

High Court: Petros-Petronas legal hearing to proceed this June 11
Judicial Commissioner Dato Faridz Gohim Abdullah, in delivering his ruling, held that there were no compelling grounds to warrant a postponement or suspension of the case. KUCHING (June 6): The High Court here has reaffirmed that the legal proceedings between state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and national oil corporation Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will proceed on June 11. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Court dismissed two applications filed by Petronas seeking an adjournment or stay of proceedings. Judicial Commissioner Dato Faridz Gohim Abdullah, in delivering his ruling, held that there were no compelling grounds to warrant a postponement or suspension of the case. The dispute centres on RM7.95 million received through a bank guarantee, which Petros alleges was wrongfully claimed by Petronas. Petros described the demand for payment as 'unconscionable' and 'unlawful', and seeks a court order restraining Petronas from using the funds. The disagreement traces back to October 2024, when Petronas called on the bank guarantee following a RM28.1 million demand from Petros in relation to gas supplied. Petros subsequently filed legal action against Petronas and applied for an interim injunction to prevent disbursement of the funds. However, the injunction application became academic after Maybank Islamic Bhd proceeded with the payment to Petronas. The report noted this is not the first time Petronas has sought to delay proceedings. In April, a similar application to suspend the lawsuit was dismissed after the Court found no exceptional circumstances to justify such relief. With the Court making it clear that further delays will not be entertained, attention now shifts to the substantive hearing on June 11 at 9am, which is expected to shed further light on the escalating legal dispute between the federal and state-owned energy entities. legal heading Petronas Petros

Plantation worker escapes gallows, sentenced to seven years for manslaughter in Taiping prison death
TAIPING, June 6 — An oil palm plantation worker escaped the death penalty after the High Court here today sentenced him to seven years in prison on an amended charge of manslaughter of a detainee at Taiping Prison, six years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md. Nurdin sentenced Mohd Nizam Shah Shahruddin, 40, to seven years in prison without a fine after the accused pleaded guilty to the amended charge from Section 302 of the Penal Code to Section 304b of the same code, which is manslaughter. The prison sentence on the accused was set to start from the date of his arrest, which was on August 29, 2019, after he was suspected of causing the death of Chua Teng Wooi, 41, at the Taiping Prison Remand Cell, here, at 9.30 pm the same day. Noor Ruwena said the sentence was handed down after examining the facts of the case and the arguments of the prosecution and defence as well as the statements of the accused and witnesses called in relation to the case. He said the court found that Mohd Nizam had succeeded in raising a reasonable doubt that he did not intend to kill the victim but was angry with the victim's actions and only wanted to teach a lesson. According to Noor Ruwena, from the testimony of the accused and several other witnesses, the victim was beaten up by a mob while in the remand cell because he often defecated everywhere due to diarrhoea. He said the doubts raised included whether the actions of the accused and other detainees caused injuries to the victim's lungs, which was the cause of death. This was because there was witness testimony that the injuries may have occurred when the victim fell in the prison toilet due to the dark conditions of the detention cell. 'The accused's statement was not challenged that he woke up other inmates to help the deceased who fell in the toilet and also lifted the deceased, the affidavit that there were (other) people who also beat the deceased was not challenged,' he said. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Sally Chay Mei Ling, while counsel Rajit Singh Tara Singh represented the accused. — Bernama
