The Kings of Epsom - Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien - have an obvious chance with Delacroix... but I don't think they'll win the Derby

Derby Day should always be something special for anyone who loves the thoroughbred.
For many it's the ultimate test of the Flat racehorse, and it has tested the best.
Winners like Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Nashwan and Sea The Stars... as well as those in defeat like Dancing Brave and El Gran Senor.
The twists and turns are one thing, the stamina test over a mile and a half of the Epsom Downs another.

Will he stay? That will be the question many ask about the majority of today's runners.
It's certainly a doubt for 2,000 Guineas hero
Ruling Court
, who was hardly mentioned after being chased home by fast-finishing Field of Gold at HQ.
Could it just be Ruling Court was the best horse for William Buick and Charlie Appleby? Time will tell.
Delacroix
really should stay for the Derby King of Trainers, Aidan O'Brien.

But Ballysax and Leopardstown Derby Trial victor Delacroix is by Dubawi.
In itself that is no bad thing.
But the super stallion has had nine runners to date in seven different editions of the Derby and none of them has finished in the first four.
Dubawi himself ran in the 2005 Derby, eventually going down eight lengths to Motivator.

That was six years after his sire, Dubai Millennium, met the only defeat of his career when sent off the favourite for the Derby.
Pride of Arras
has only raced twice but looked very useful when romping home from
Damysus
in a slowly run Dante at York which saw

pull his chance away in the first two furlongs.
Ralph Beckett's challenger, ridden by Hector Crouch, is bred to stay and could be the real deal for owner-breeder Mrs David Aykroyd.
Her colours are also carried by Amiloc, who hacked up at Goodwood the other day but can't run here as he's been gelded.

Lambourn
is a similar type to Los Angeles who ran well behind stable companion City of Troy last year.
Another O'Brien raider, Lambourn is proven over further having landed the Chester Vase but he was beaten by Delacroix in the Ballysax.
The other I want to mention, before I get on to Midak, is
Stanhope Gardens
, who is another for Beckett and has always appeared to be a Derby type.
Last season Stanhope Gardens was only beaten a neck by Delacroix in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket. That puts him bang in the mix.

The son of Ghaiyyath is bred to stay well and had effectively a racecourse gallop at Salisbury the other day when winning an event put on especially for him.
But let's get back to my French fancy

He runs in the colours of Aga Khan Studs SCEA in a Derby run in memory of His Highness Aga Khan IV.

That means he carries the green and red silks that have been worn at Epsom by legends like Shergar, Shahrastani, Kahyasi, Sinndar and Harzand.
So, naturally, a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Midak victory would be fairytale stuff under Mickaël Barzalona, who won this on Pour Moi in 2011.
Midak is out of a mare by Sinndar and is already very useful.
My hope is unbeaten in three races and his form suggests he's a solid, improving Group 2 horse, having scored well over an extended 1m2f at Saint-Cloud last time.

He kept on well that day suggesting this trip would suit and of course he's bred for it.
'He's definitely a horse improving with his races and will definitely get the trip,' explained Nemone Routh, racing manager for the Aga Khan Studs.
'We're not sure on his form lines and how it stacks up, but all he can do is win and he's won every start.
'He's going to have to handle the track and he's a big horse with a big, long stride. Mickael Barzalona thinks he will handle the track because he's well balanced.

'We would be very happy to see him finish in the first three or even first five, but he is a bit of an unknown quantity and he does everything easily at home. It's a little bit of a shot in the dark, but we thought it was worth it.'
It's the type of Derby to simply 'have a go'.
And there would be no more poignant victory than one for Midak.

Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Ombudsman was the horse he nabbed in the shadow of the post that day and while John and Thady Gosden's runner is the marginal favourite to gain his revenge, O'Brien is happy with his charge ahead of the rematch. 'He seems in good form since Sandown, so I'm looking forward to it,' said the Ballydoyle handler. 'What he did at Sandown after the passage he had there was unusual (the way he quickened up), so we hope he runs well again.' City Of Troy went to the Breeders' Cup Classic last year and whoever wins the International will again be guaranteed a starting berth, should they wish to tackle the Del Mar dirt on November 1. To ensure a true-run race at York after the sedate pace of the Eclipse, Godolphin supplemented the Andre Fabre-trained Birr Castle to help Ombudsman. John Gosden said: 'The Eclipse was a muddling race and we didn't want the prospect of a repeat, so Godolphin have kindly provided us with a nice horse to use as a pacemaker and he arrived on Thursday.' Adding the international flavour is the Japanese Derby winner Danon Decile, who has been in Newmarket for a couple of weeks. He has not run since beating Calandagan in the Dubai Sheema Classic in early April, but that form looks strong given the runner-up has since won twice at Group One level. It promises to be a big day for the Ballydoyle duo MATT CHAPMAN I'm loading up on the 15-1 Aidan O'Brien-Ryan Moore treble I can't see losing on day one of York BANG. Bang. Bang. That could be Aidan O'Brien at York on Wednesday as Ireland's super trainer bids to take top billing on the super Knavesmire as he sends out the exciting Italy and monsters in Derby hero Lambourn and Eclipse demolisher Delacroix. 1 I fancy Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore to bang in a tasty treble to get punters off to a flyer on day one of the Ebor festival from York Credit: Sportsfile Oh yes, the Juddmonte International fixture gets off with a bang, with DELACROIX trying to follow up his victory over Royal Ascot hero Ombudsman in a messy Coral feature at Sandown. And the big Group 1, live on ITV, is not just about familiar names at the top level. Challenging from Japan is Danon Decile, who when last seen defeated the brilliant Calandagan in the Sheema Classic at Meydan in April. Back in fourth that day was the multiple Group 1 hero Rebel's Romance. Ironically for a race called 'internationaI', it is 50 years since Dahlia's second win in the Juddmonte while Triptych scored in 1987. Meanwhile, See The Fire will try and match her dam, Arabian Queen, who was the last female horse to win the Juddmonte International back in 2015. The fairer sex don't land this prize often, although others to have done so include One So Wonderful in 1998 and In the Groove in 1990. Ryan Moore will be on top of Delacroix, who flopped in the Derby but was a spectacular winner of the Eclipse and whatever connections say (some have suggested he might be best at a mile) I think he stays this trip really well. He's the one for me. LAMBOURN goes in the St Leger trial, the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur, although the Arc de Triomphe might be more his ultimate target. I'm not opposing the short-priced favourite. O'Brien's colt has done little wrong this season, following up his Epsom success with victory, albeit far from impressive, in the Irish equivalent. On ratings he has achieved miles more than most of these, and while some of course are open to improvement he should take all the beating again under Moore. ITALY goes in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb for colts and geldings. O'Brien surely knows where he is with big rival Distance Storm having sent out the horse who got closest to the unbeaten Godolphin runner at Newmarket 40 days ago. A son of Wootton Bassett, Italy looked very good on debut but ultimately was beaten by Godolphin's Saba Desert in the Group 2 Superlative. That, of course, means Charlie Appleby has a strong guide too! I'm sticking with Italy mainly because he has that bit more experience and I was left thinking he wasn't quite at his best in the Superlative. More Moore. ITV Racing start at York with a handicap over an extended 5f. TREFOR ran an absolute cracker at Windsor the other day suggesting he's bang in form for Charlie Hills. My selection can run off 1lb lower here and his traveling pace should stand him in good stead on this track. He's only run here once before and didn't do well, but on that occasion he hung badly left and just wasn't himself even though the vet found no issues. Kieran Shoemark takes the ride. Finally on telly there is a handicap over an extended 2m. A huge chance this for ALPHONSE LE GRANDE to outstay his rivals for Tony Martin and William Buick. The Cesarewitch winner has not been disgraced in 2025, running twice with a pipe opener at the Curragh follow by an eighth in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. This is not a strong renewal in my book and he has a great chance to score if there is any sort of pace at all. Good luck!
