
GOL, TAP Adopt IATA FuelIS to Deliver Long-term Fuel Savings - Middle East Business News and Information
The International Air Transport Association IATA announced that GOL and TAP Air Portugal have become the first airlines to use IATA FuelIS—an advanced analytics solution designed to help airlines optimize fuel consumption.
IATA's net-zero carbon emissions roadmap highlights that technology and operational efficiency improvements—which directly lower fuel consumption—are expected to contribute to about 10% of the emissions reduction in 2050*.
'Fuel management is key for airlines. Depending on the prevailing price of jet fuel, it generally accounts for 25-30% of the cost base. On top of that, as airlines decarbonize, tracking and managing carbon costs—which are directly related to fuel consumption—will be a growing priority. Understanding how an airline is performing compared with industry peers using FuelIS can pinpoint potential efficiencies that reduce costs and improve environmental performance. The great support from 220 airlines contributing operational data on fuel consumption combined with continuously improving analytical capabilities makes FuelIS a very compelling tool,' said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security.
Data Accuracy and Reliability:
IATA FuelIS helps airlines benchmark the fuel efficiency of their aircraft or engines against industry averages, gaining valuable insights into specific markets, regions, countries, and fleet types based on real operational data. IATA FuelIS uses data from the IATA Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform. This data is sourced from the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program which now comprises fuel data from more than 220 airlines worldwide, covering more than 8 million flights a year.
FuelIS integrates seamlessly with IATA's Fuel Efficiency Gap Analysis (FEGA), with the data from FuelIS supporting the development and tracking of fuel strategies. Since 2005, IATA has partnered with airlines worldwide, helping the industry identify potential annual reductions of 4.76 million tonnes in fuel consumption, equating to $3.8 billion in savings annually.

IATA CO2 Connect Integrated into the Amadeus Travel Platform - Middle East Business News and Information
The International Air Transport Association IATA and Amadeus are integrating flight-specific emissions data from IATA CO2 Connect in the Amadeus Travel Platform. This will allow airlines, travel agents, corporate travel managers, and online platforms that request IATA CO2 Connect data to provide travelers with a new source of trusted emissions data at the point of booking. IATA CO2 Connect uses real operational data, such as aircraft type-specific fuel consumption, directly contributed by over 70 airlines and calculated using a globally standardized methodology. 'Our agreement with Amadeus will help fulfill traveler expectations for greater transparency as airlines progress towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050. IATA surveys reveal that close to 90% of passengers expect airlines or travel agents to provide carbon emission data for flights they have booked. Yet, 79% highlight that the carbon calculations provided are not always consistent. Making IATA CO2 Connect data available through the Amadeus platform will help users make more informed travel decisions using accurate emissions data,' said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. ISO 14083 assurance: The recent ISO 14083 assurance of IATA CO2 Connect aligns the emissions calculator with the common methodology for the data collection and reporting of greenhouse gases across the transport and logistics industry. This new ISO standard is expected to become the basis for the Count Emissions EU regulatory proposal that will define the emissions calculations for all transport modes in the European Union. Luis Gallego Chairs IATA Board - Middle East Business News and Information
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that Luis Gallego, CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG), has assumed his duties as Chair of the IATA Board. His one-year term began at the conclusion of the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, India, on 2 June 2025. Gallego is the 83rd Chair of the IATA Board on which he has served since 2018. Gallego succeeds IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, who will continue to serve on the Board. 'I am honored to be taking up the position of Chair of the IATA Board. The airline industry faces significant challenges—accelerating environmental action, managing geopolitical shifts and supply chain issues, and dealing with concerns over infrastructure capacity and costs. At the same time, the industry has incredible strengths to call on— most of all the quality of the people that strive to make aviation a safe, secure and rewarding experience for millions of travelers every day. IATA has a vital role in harnessing these human and technical resources to deliver leadership and innovation. I look forward to playing my part in steering IATA in its long mission for a strong and successful airline industry,' said Gallego. Gallego has nearly 30 years of broad experience in the aviation industry. He became IAG's chief executive in September 2020, joining from Iberia, where he was chairman and chief executive from January 2014. During his tenure at Iberia, he turned the airline around and improved its efficiency, customer service and brand. Before that, Gallego launched Iberia Express, as chief executive from January 2012, making the new Iberia subsidiary one of the most efficient and punctual airlines in Europe. Gallego joined Iberia Express from Vueling where he was chief operating officer from 2009, when the airline merged with the low-cost carrier Clickair which he co-founded in 2006. He held various posts at Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum between 1997 and 2006. 'I look forward to working with Luis to deliver an agenda of IATA activities that are critical to the current and future success of our member airlines. Luis has a long and deep involvement with the complex issues which are top priorities for our Association—facilitating net zero carbon emissions by 2050, achieving a smart approach to regulation and ensuring a capacity and cost structure that can meet the growing demands for air connectivity.
