Peoria City Council approves $475,000 grant to demolish more vacant homes
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — An abandoned home demolition program in Peoria is getting nearly another half million dollars in state funding. Peoria City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the $475,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). It's the second round of funding for the Strong Communities Program. Joe Dulin, the city's community development director, said they demolished more than 90 blighted homes in the first round to make way for new affordable housing in the East Bluff and the Southside. This includes Church View Gardens, the Southside's first new housing complex in more than 20 years. Dulin said the additional funding will allow them to demolish 40 more homes. But there was debate among city councilmembers about what kind of developers they should work with. 'But I wish we would have a little bit more compassion for what really built our neighborhood and instead of how do we get the investors from Jersey to come here and make investments until their tax credits run out and the place becomes a disaster,' said At-Large City Councilman John Kelly. First District City Councilwoman Denise Jackson said rental developments should also be on the table to increase access to housing. 'You live in a community that has developed this infamous distinction as one of the poorest zip codes in the country, you have so much poverty as a result of years and years of disinvestment. And you come to the realization that folks living in this area, some of which are not in position to purchase a home,' she said. The Strong Communities Program is a state initiative that provides grant funding to local government agencies to address affordable housing needs and revitalize communities. The program is funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and managed by IDHA. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Frozen Food Manufacturer Expands Production in Toluca plant
TOLUCA, Ill (WMBD) — Dozens of potstickers zoomed by on a wide conveyor belt at a Toluca frozen food plant on Tuesday as the owners looked with pride. It's a special moment as Ajinomoto Foods North America cut the ribbon to their third new production line. 'We're celebrating the startup of our third manufacturing line over the last five years,' said Dave Gardner, the chief supply chain officer for the company. Ajinomoto is a leader in specialty frozen food production, with operations across North America, including one in this Marshall County city. Ajinomoto makes such brands as Ling Ling, Tai Pei and José Olé to name a few. Ajinomoto's website says that, ''Eat Well. Live Well.' has been our North Star for over 100 years. It guides us to make the most nutritious and delicious foods to satisfy the widest array of preferences and consumers.' This new production line is focused on doing just that. 'We produce Asian dumplings, or we call them potstickers. And so, this is a new investment to expand our production for that category,' Gardner said. Ajinomoto's new investment isn't just supporting the company, but the surrounding city of Toluca and its community. 'When you make a significant investment, not only is it helpful to the business…' said Alex Stoeger, the company's senior director of operations. 'But it's helpful to the employees, and certainly it's helpful to the community, especially these small communities. They thrive on the success of the factory for their own local economy.' Toluca is the home for this manufacturing plant, but also home to many of the employees who work for Ajinomoto. 'Toluca is a really important part of our network. The Toluca area has a great, hardworking, committed workforce. And so, it's a plant that's very successful because of the quality of the team that we're able to produce here,' said Gardner. And with one investment, hopefully more comes with it, at least that is what the company hopes for the future. 'For every investment. We say if we do this right, more will come. And so here we are again. The Toluca factory has knocked this out of the park. They've done it right. Is there more to come? Maybe,' Stoeger said. You can find Ajinomoto's products at any local retailer, including Costco, Kroger and many other retailers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ben Zobrist happy to be part of Sunday Morning League Hall of Fame
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — He's won two World Series titles and helping break a 108-year championship drought. But Ben Zobrist says he's humbled when he thinks about going into the Peoria Sunday Morning League Hall of Fame. At 110-years old, the PSML is the oldest amateur baseball league in the country. 'It's pretty special to know this league sets itself apart from a lot of other leagues because of how long it's been running,' Zobrist said. The Sunday Morning League inducted 11 new members to its Hall of Fame on Friday night. Zobrist, who was the World Series MVP when he helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series, was the guest speaker for the banquet. Zobrist grew up in Eureka and played parts of two seasons in the PSML when he was a collegiate player at Olivet Nazarene University. At the time, he admits he didn't realize the history of the league. 'I actually stepped foot in this (league) before I understood the magnitude of that history,' Zobrist said.
