Morocco and Zambia share the spoils

CAF04-04-2025
After their brilliant performance in the opening match of the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF U-17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, winning 5-0 against Uganda, Morocco hoped for a second consecutive victory against Zambia to secure their spot in the quarterfinals of the competition.
Nabil Baha's men faced strong resistance from the young Chipolopolo, who gave them very little space.
In the first half, both teams observed each other for a long time, offering very few chances of threat. The match became slightly more lively after the break, although both sides were still not very indecisive in the final third.
While Morocco continued to push for control of the game, their momentum was halted by the expulsion of their defender Hamza Mouhadi, who made an illegal challenge on Zambian forward Kelvin Mulenga Chipelu in the 75th minute. Vincent Kabore, the Burkinabe referee, used the VAR to make this decision, which could have been the turning point of the match.
Zambia nearly took advantage of their numerical superiority in added time, but substitute Gabriel Phiri's late effort could not find the back of the net (90+5).
Despite being a player down, Morocco laboured until the end but failed to take two good opportunities in the final moments.
Ahmed Mouhoub's shot, completely unmarked in the Zambian defense, flew well over the bar (90+7), while Ilies Belmokhtar also squandered one last chance in the final seconds, misfiring a shot in the box.
With this goalless draw, Morocco and Zambia share the top of Group A with 4 points each. Earlier, Uganda triumphed 3-0 over Tanzania and occupies third place with 3 points, while Tanzania, after two consecutive defeat remain bottom of the group.
Morocco will seek qualification against Tanzania on Sunday on Match Day 3, while Zambia will face Uganda in a crucial final day tie.

Suleiman praises discipline after Tanzania's solid CHAN 2024 opener

Tanzania coach Hamad Suleiman praised his side's tactical discipline and focus after they opened their TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaign with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam. The Taifa Stars kicked off their Group B journey on home soil with a professional display at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday, delighting their passionate home fans and laying a solid foundation for their tournament ambitions. 'It wasn't easy – but we knew our weaknesses' Speaking in the post-match press conference, Suleiman revealed the victory was the result of targeted improvements made in training, particularly in the attacking third – an area he openly admitted had been a concern. 'It wasn't easy. We knew that beforehand,' the Tanzanian coach said. 'Even when we started the training camp, we knew that our team wasn't effective at scoring goals. We had a very strong defense, but offensively we had a lot to improve.' The Taifa Stars worked extensively on attacking movements and chance creation during their preparations, and Suleiman believes the effort paid off on the pitch. 'We focused a lot on the offensive side,' he continued. 'During training sessions, we emphasised attacking drills with the aim of creating and converting more chances.' Pleased but not satisfied Despite the win, Suleiman is not getting carried away. He commended his players for applying his tactical instructions but insists the team must keep improving if they are to challenge for the title on home soil. 'Thanks to the players, they have adapted well to what we worked on in training,' he said. 'There are still some problems in how we finish our chances, so we will continue to work.' He welcomed the positive start to the tournament, adding: 'We started well — that was our goal. Now we aim to improve with every match.' Burkina Faso left frustrated For Burkina Faso coach Issa Balbouni, the opening fixture was one to forget. The Stallions struggled to impose themselves from the outset and fell behind in the first half after conceding a penalty — a moment Balbouni said disrupted their game plan. 'It was difficult for us to enter the match,' the Burkinabe coach said. 'The penalty awarded to Tanzania destabilised us. We tried to come back into the game, but it was hard.' Balbouni was quick to credit Tanzania's dominance in midfield and their superior attacking play. 'Tanzania won the midfield battle and were more effective in attack than our team,' he admitted. Fatigue blamed for sluggish start In assessing his team's underwhelming display, Balbouni pointed to travel fatigue as a key factor. 'We had a long journey to get to Tanzania,' he said. 'Physically, we arrived tired, just two days before the tournament started.' Despite the poor result, Balbouni dismissed the notion that the large Tanzanian crowd had an impact on his players. 'The fans do not bother us — we are used to that. We've been playing outside our country for five years,' he noted, alluding to Burkina Faso's prolonged exile from home grounds due to stadium issues. 'We will make amends' Balbouni vowed his team would learn from their mistakes and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures. 'We will correct the errors we made,' he said. 'We will do our best to please our fans. We will come back better for the rest of the competition.' With two more matches to play in the group stage, Burkina Faso still have a chance to reach the knockout stages — but improvement is essential. Group B standings take shape The win lifts Tanzania to the top of Group B with three points — a perfect start to their campaign. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, sit bottom and must respond quickly to keep their quarter-final hopes alive. The result highlighted the strength of the Tanzanian squad, especially their midfield cohesion and defensive stability. Burkina Faso, in contrast, lacked rhythm and struggled to create clear-cut chances. Both sides eye next steps The post-match reactions from both coaches reveal a tournament that will demand consistency and tactical sharpness from every team. Tanzania now head into their next match with renewed confidence and a clear sense of identity, while Burkina Faso face the immediate challenge of regrouping under pressure. Suleiman, however, remains focused on one match at a time. 'We will try to be better in every match,' he stressed. Balbouni echoed the sentiment of continued effort, stating: 'The tournament is not over. We will fight.' As CHAN 2024 gathers momentum, Group B is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive — and Tanzania have thrown down the gauntlet.

Kenya v DR Congo: Hosts set for litmus test in high-stakes Group A showdown

The Harambee Stars of Kenya will begin their historic journey in the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 on Sunday with a mouthwatering Group A clash against two-time champions DR Congo at the iconic Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. This opening fixture marks Kenya's return to the continental stage and promises to set the tone for what is expected to be one of the most competitive editions of the tournament to date. With five nations battling for just two quarter-final slots in Group A, every match takes on added significance — and the hosts are under pressure to deliver from the very first whistle. Kenya: Resilience tested as McCarthy's men eye dream start For head coach Benni McCarthy, Sunday's match represents the culmination of months of rebuilding and preparation — albeit with notable challenges along the way. Appointed in March, the South African tactician has infused the Harambee Stars with confidence and modern tactical flair, but the team's build-up to the tournament has been marred by unexpected player departures and fitness concerns. Key attackers Moses Shumah and Emmanuel Osoro — the FKF Premier League's top two scorers — were initially part of the squad before sealing moves to Zambian club Power Dynamos. Rising teenage talent Mohamed Bajaber followed suit, completing a high-profile transfer to Simba SC in Tanzania on the eve of the competition. In addition, Bandari defender Pamba Swaleh was ruled out due to a medical condition, while Kenya Police midfielder Brian Musa suffered a knee injury, further depleting the squad's depth. McCarthy, however, remains upbeat. 'We've had solid preparations with tremendous backing from the government,' he said during the pre-match press conference. 'Yes, we've faced setbacks, but the players have shown great hunger and drive. Choosing the starting XI has been tough, but I'm confident that whoever takes the pitch will make the country proud.' The team received a massive morale boost with a surprise visit from President William Ruto, who shared breakfast with the squad and announced a substantial incentive package should the team win the tournament. 'The president's gesture has energized the entire group,' McCarthy added. 'We're motivated not just by rewards, but by the pride of representing Kenya on home soil.' DR Congo: Redemption mission begins under Otis Ngoma On the opposite side, DR Congo — the most successful team in CHAN history with two titles (2009 and 2016) — arrive with unfinished business. The Leopards endured a disappointing outing in Algeria two years ago, exiting at the group stage without a single goal. Coach Otis Ngoma Kondi is determined to right those wrongs. 'We are not here for tourism,' he said emphatically. 'It's a competition. The conditions here in Kenya are great, but we're fully focused on football.' Despite a shortened preparation period and only one friendly match before kickoff, Ngoma believes his squad is ready. 'Our first goal is to reach the quarter-finals,' he added. 'We want to erase the memory of Algeria and go as far as possible — maybe even win it for a third time.' Historic clash at a packed Kasarani Kenya and DR Congo have met seven times previously, most recently in friendly matches in 2016, 2017, and 2019. The Harambee Stars won the first two and drew the third 1-1 in Spain. This time, however, the stakes are much higher. The 60,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium is sold out, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric as Kenyan fans rally behind their team. The Leopards, known for their physical style and tactical maturity, will look to quiet the home crowd and impose their experience. Group A outlook Following the DR Congo tie, Kenya will face Angola on Thursday 7 August and Morocco on Sunday 10 August. The Harambee Stars will conclude their group stage campaign against Zambia on 17 August. With powerhouses like Morocco, Angola, and Zambia in the same group, the margin for error is slim. Both teams know that a win on Sunday could be pivotal to their quarter-final hopes. Match Details Fixture: Kenya vs DR Congo Date: Sunday 3 August 2024 Kick-off: 15:00 local time (1200 GMT) Venue: Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi Group: A
