Not Candidates, But Casts Matter In These Bihar Assembly Seats

India.com23-07-2025
Bihar has always been a state where caste equations trump political dynamics. Caste influence remains a defining factor in its electoral outcomes in the state. As the state gears up for Assembly polls later this year, political parties and alliances are stepping up with promises and freebies to attract voters. The NDA, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has announced schemes like free electricity and increased monthly pension for women in an effort to woo the electorate. Kumar has also increased reservations in the government jobs for women.
However, Bihar's political equations are not that simple. In this state, caste continues to dominate the political narrative. Over the years, many political parties have fielded candidates primarily based on caste backgrounds. Among the total 243 Assembly seats, several constituencies are known for consistently electing candidates from specific castes, whether General, OBC, SC, or ST.
Yadav Influence In Bihar Politics
The Yadav community, constituting around 14 per cent of the state's population, has been a powerful political bloc, especially supportive of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Both in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, Yadav candidates who mostly belong to RJD have secured victories in numerous constituencies over the past few polls.
The Maner Assembly Constituency has consistently elected Yadav candidates. Since 2010, RJD's Bhai Virendra Yadav has been the sitting MLA. On the other hand, the Paliganj Assembly Seat was won by RJD's Jai Vardhan Yadav in 2015. In 2020, Sandeep Yadav of CPI (ML) secured the seat, reflecting ongoing Yadav influence.
The Mahua assembly seat has also remained a Yadav-dominated seat, notably bagged by Tej Pratap Yadav in 2015. The Raghopur seat, once held by Lalu and Rabri Devi, was won by JD(U)'s Satish Kumar Yadav in 2010. However, Tejashwi Yadav reclaimed the seat in 2015, reinforcing the family's stronghold.
Raghopur and Mahua are politically symbolic for the RJD due to their association with Lalu Prasad Yadav's family.
Paswan Community Influence
The Paswan community, a dominant Scheduled Caste group, has strongholds in several SC-reserved constituencies. Rajnagar Assembly Seat (Madhubani) has consistently elected Ram Prit Paswan of the BJP, showcasing the community's influence and the party's strong presence.
Rajput Community Strongholds
The Rajput community remains a dominant upper-caste group, especially in western and central Bihar. From 1990 to 2005, Ramdhani Singh, a Rajput leader, held the seat. However, again in 2010 and 2015, JD(U)'s Jai Kumar Singh, also a Rajput, was elected from the seat.
Kayastha Community's Urban Influence
The Kayastha community is numerically smaller, but it remains politically significant because of its urban influence. They don't dominate any seat demographically, but often play a kingmaker role. Key constituencies where Kayastha influence is notable include Kumhrar and Bankipur in Patna.

Govt panel to conduct survey to identify farmers in need of loan waiver in Maharashtra, says BJP minister Bawankule

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Maharashtra govt has formed a committee to conduct a survey to identify farmers who really need a loan waiver, revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Thursday. Talking to reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, he said the exercise to list farmers who actually need a loan waiver and weed out cultivators who are not eligible for such reliefs will be completed soon. "There are people who construct farm houses and are on the list of loan waivers. A committee has been formed to find the actual needy farmers. A survey will be conducted through this committee and the needy farmers will be listed for loan waiver," stated the BJP minister. "The EVM is good when they win and it is bad when they lose elections. Leaders from opposition parties are joining us [BJP] from various parts of Maharashtra. This [EVM manipulation claim] is also an effort to stop their party workers [from joining other outfits]," he said. In reply to a question, Bawankule sought to downplay deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's frequent New Delhi visits. "As a leader of the [BJP-led] NDA alliance, it is obvious [for Shinde] to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. If co-ordination or dialogue is not good, then we cannot move ahead. Dialogue and discussion on issues is important in the NDA," the BJP leader emphasised. YSRCP slams Naidu govt for neglecting weavers, breaking handloom promises

The YSRCP on Thursday accused the NDA-led Andhra Pradesh government of "neglecting" the handloom sector and "abandoning" key pre-poll promises, alleging that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's administration had "betrayed the weaver community and pushed them into distress." YSRCP leaders hit out at Naidu govt on National Handloom Day, accusing it of abandoning weavers and failing to act on key welfare promises made before polls.(CMO Andhra Pradesh-X) YSRCP leaders, including MLC Lella Appi Reddy, Surendra Babu, and Chillapalli Mohan Rao, said the government's inaction had deepened the crisis faced by weavers. This came after Naidu marked National Handloom Day with promises to support weavers and revive the handloom sector. "Naidu and his administration have betrayed weavers by abandoning election promises, leaving the community in crisis," the leaders alleged in a press release. Appi Reddy claimed that under the previous YSRCP government, benefits worth ₹3,700 crore were extended to the handloom sector, including ₹1.2 lakh each to 85,000 weaver families. He accused the NDA coalition of "making hollow and misleading promises". The YSRCP leaders criticised the current government for allegedly failing to implement schemes such as free electricity, GST relief, and health insurance for weavers, even after 14 months in power. He alleged that the government continued to impose the same tax burden on weavers. He also alleged that the promised free electricity scheme remained unimplemented, even six months after an official order was issued. Chillapalli Mohan Rao claimed that the previous YSRCP government had tripled weavers' income and cleared dues worth ₹400 crore owed by the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (APCO). He added that showrooms were also constructed during Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure, unlike the 'symbolic gestures' from the current administration. The YSRCP demanded immediate fulfillment of promises made to weavers, warning that "continued neglect would deepen the crisis in the sector."
