Understandably, Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan plans on staying in the lineup and avoiding the injured list.

As of Wednesday evening, Donovan remains optimistic that'll be the case. Donovan told reporters after Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that an MRI confirmed a sprained capsule in the joint of his left big toe.
According to Cardinals reporter Jeff Jones, Donovan called a potential IL stint a "worst case" scenario. Donovan did not play on Wednesday.
"[The injury is] kind of in a weird spot," Donovan explained. "It happened to me on my back foot, the foot I rotate off of."
Jones reported on X/Twitter that Donovan could miss a few days. The Cardinals open a four-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

Donovan said he would definitely travel to Milwaukee.

"I'm feeling much better today," Donovan added. "Obviously, we did a bunch to it today ... I wanna be able to full go [and not just hit.]"
Although the news isn't ideal, it's nonetheless a major bullet dodged, at least in the short term. The Cardinals cannot afford to lose Donovan, who owns career highs in average (.310) and OPS (.819) through 64 games.
It's been another fine season for Donovan, who has already posted 2.3 bWAR and notched 20 doubles for a Cardinals team chasing a Wild Card berth.
As of publication, the Cardinals (36-32) sat three games behind the San Diego Padres (38-28) and Philadelphia Phillies (39-29) for the NL's final Wild Card spots.
