Lanzarote hotel room ceiling collapsed as family woken by 'big crash' at 3am

Daily Record25-04-2025

A fuming mum claims her family could have been killed on their Easter break to Lanzarote when a hotel room ceiling collapsed as they slept. Linsey Rees from Durham was on holiday with her mum and two kids when they were woken up by a 'big crash' at 3am on March 31. The 44-year-old couldn't believe her eyes, when she noticed the accommodation's 'concrete' bathroom ceiling had fallen down. Photos and video footage show large chunks of roof covering the shower, sink and floor - while exposed light bulb wires can be seen hanging down dangerously. Linsey was relieved her 74-year-old mum Denise Taylor and two kids Lucas Adams and Nevarah Littlefair, aged 15 and nine, weren't in the bathroom at the time. She fears Lucas's birthday trip abroad could have ended with her family members 'coming home in a box' had the ceiling fallen on their heads. The mum-of-two rushed down to reception where she says they gave her a new room and offered her free cocktails, which she refused and says she was 'disgusted' to only receive a £100 voucher from On The Beach, who she had booked the 'holiday from hell' with. However, after being contacted by reporters, they offered her a full £1,250 refund and an additional £100 voucher. Linsey told Teeside Live: "It's advertised as a four-star hotel but it certainly wasn't. It was a holiday from hell. At 3am all we heard was a big crash then my son came running into the bedroom and said 'mum look at the bathroom'. "The whole ceiling had come completely down. I was in shock and half asleep. Me and my son went over to the reception where I explained what happened but the receptionist said 'can I come and see?' because I think she thought it (had only come down) a little bit. "She walked in and said 'wow, I've never seen anything like this'. She moved us three doors down but my mum stayed awake and she didn't dare go back to sleep. "We only took our bags with passports because our main concern was just to get out of there because if those lights had snapped we would've got electrocuted. All this stuff in the bathroom was smashed but I couldn't get in to see what could be salvaged. "I know my mum's mirror broke, there were bottles of perfume smashed and the toothbrushes were covered in concrete. They didn't even offer us a complimentary toothbrush . "My kids were scarred from the experience and they wouldn't go in the new room's shower just in case. It was concrete that dropped so someone could've been killed if that had happened while we were in the shower or while we had gone to the toilet." The mum claims she was not told why the ceiling had collapsed and grew 'irate' when they offered her hotel freebies and a late check-out as an apology. Linsey said: "The receptionist kept offering us free drinks, free Wi-Fi and they tried to give me cocktails but I said 'I don't drink'. "She said she could give me a late check out and I did get irate and said I wouldn't take the late checkout but if they gave me a flight home now, I'd take that. Once I got home , reality hit me. "My children and mother could've been coming home in a box and that's not a nice thing to think. On The Beach only offered me a £100 voucher and it doesn't begin to make up for things. I think it's absolutely disgusting. If they offered me a free holiday there, I'd say definitely not. I'd never, ever step foot there again." An On The Beach spokesman said: "We are sorry to hear about the Rees' experience and understand how upsetting it must have been. We are urgently investigating this with the hotel . The initial support provided to Ms Lees did not meet our high standards or expectations and for that we are very sorry. "We have spoken with Ms Rees and she has accepted a full hotel refund with a further goodwill gesture for the inconvenience caused." The hotel has been contacted for comment.

The latest on Celtic's winger hunt amid 'number of targets'

The Parkhead club are 'expected' to sign versatile attacking midfielder Benjamin Nygren from Nordsjaelland, although it doesn't look like they will stop there. Indeed, Sky Sports claims that Celtic are on the hunt for a winger this summer, and that they have 'made contact' for a number of targets, including Sondre Orjasaeter of Sarpsborg and Royal Antwerp's Michel-Ange Balikwisha. Read more: The latter ended an injury-ravaged 2024/25 campaign by contributing to seven goals in 11 games. Balikwisha was linked with a move to Parkehad last summer, while Orjasaeter was said to be the subject of a £4.6 million bid from Celtic in January. He previously addressed his failed move: "I struggled to sleep," revealed Orjasaeter. "I didn't know if I was going to be in Norway or not. I could have moved at any moment. I had to carry my passport with me everywhere. "When the window closed, I felt a sense of relief. I came to the conclusion that I was determined to stay in Sarpsborg and play here, because I didn't know if I was ready to leave yet. "Going abroad now is another level up. It had become more professional and everything. There were many thoughts going through my head during that period. "If I get a little more time in Sarpsborg, I think I'll mature and be ready for it eventually. "Of course, you will have a better life after your career if you have more money in your account, but you only live once. For me, it is just as important to have fun along the way. It is probably even more important "I have a lot of friends to keep me grounded. I think if I only had football, my head would explode! "I'm not much of a fan of football, but I love having it as a job. I couldn't have a better job than what I have. "But when I see that my friends are going on holiday or to ski at Easter, I get jealous. I'm not going to lie. "I hope that those clubs understand that not everyone can be the same. At the same time, I have my serious side too. And I think that kind of thing comes a little with age."

Sun-believable! Europe's sunniest beach has been named and, with daily highs of 32 degrees, it could be the ideal place to soak up some rays this summer. According to a new study, Oludeniz Beach in Fethiye is Europe's sunniest shoreline with nearly 10 and a half hours of sunshine a day. Known as the 'Blue Lagoon', Oludeniz Beach has crystal-clear water, golden sand and mountain scenery. Due to its beauty, the 18km beach is a popular spot in summer so tourists will want to get their early to claim their patch of sand. But the beach gets rave reviews on Tripadvisor with one tourist describing it as 'gorgeous' and another visitor even crowning it the 'perfect beach'. And On The Beach has cheap package holiday deals to Fethiye from just £293 per person. If a trip to Turkey isn't on the cards, the next sunniest beach in Europe is Anthony Quinn Bay in Rhodes. Located in Faliraki, the gorgeous bay is named after the actor Anthony Quinn who starred in the Guns of Navarone, which was filmed there. With average highs of 32 degrees and more than 10 hours and 20 minutes of sunshine a day, the beach is the ideal spot to pick up a tan. Anthony Quinn Bay is 250m long and is backed by palm trees. It's known for being a quiet and safe place to swim. Nissi Bay in Ayia Napa takes third place on the list with highs of 29 degrees and just under 10 and a half hours of sunshine a day. The 500m long white sand beach has a huge range of watersports on offer and incredibly clear water for swimming. Playa de las Teresitas in Tenerife is the first Spanish beach on the list with highs of 26 degrees and more than 10 and a half hours of sunshine a day. The beach's striking yellow sand was actually imported from the Sahara Desert and with its palm trees, it's easy to feel like you're somewhere more exotic than Spain. Europe's fifth sunniest beach is Agia Fotia Beach in Crete which enjoys highs of 29 degrees and just under 10 and a half hours of sunshine a day. The picturesque bay is popular with locals and has easy access to beach bars and restaurants. Saga, the company that commissioned the study, says: 'Oludeniz tops our ranking of Europe's sunniest and warmest beach destinations. The beach lures both local and foreign tourists as a natural wonder, with spring waters emerging from the seabed to keep its waters crystal-clear. 'Bathed in sunlight all day, the beach's renowned Blue Lagoon is home to turquoise waters, surrounded by a stunning mountainous backdrop. 'Even in cooler seasons, the beach offers a peaceful escape with crisp waters and calm surroundings.' Playa de Maspalomas, Lady's Mile Beach, Elafonissi Beach, Tsamadou Beach and Praia do Barril beach all rank among the top 10 sunniest beaches.

Spring Sunshine Hits May Footfall Figures as Consumers Choose Leisure Over Shopping

Unseasonal warm and sunny spring weather may have impacted retail footfall in May as consumers prioritised leisure and outdoor activities. According to WRC-Sensormatic data, Welsh footfall decreased by 0.4% in May (YoY), down from 13.6% in April. Shopping centre footfall decreased by 5.4% in May (YoY), down from 8.1% in April. Retail park footfall increased by 1.2% in May (YoY), down from 11.6% in April. In May, footfall in Cardiff decreased by 2.1% (YoY), down from 9.0% in April. Sara Jones, Head of the Welsh Retail Consortium, said: 'Retailers will be a little disappointed as visits to shopping destinations fell back slightly in Wales in May. Hopes were high after a positive Easter trading period but sadly the figures were a small fall back from 2024's performance. It wasn't all bad news. Wales was the top performing nation in the UK last month, and retail parks continued to show growth. However, visits to Cardiff fell a little, and shopping centres saw a five per cent decrease. 'Last June saw concerts and sporting events draw consumers onto the high street but didn't translate into increased sales. The hope is this summer will see that footfall bounce repeated, but this time hopefully consumers will choose products rather than experiences. With consumer confidence shaky right now and businesses grappling with higher costs there is a lot on the line in the coming months.' Andy Sumpter, Retail Consultant EMEA for Sensormatic Solutions, said: 'Welsh retail footfall held up better than the UK average in May, with a year-on-year decline of just -0.4% compared to -1.7% nationally. High streets and shopping centres still saw some softening, but retail parks continued to show resilience, supported by their convenience and accessibility. 'Despite the warm and sunny weather – more typical of peak summer than late spring – footfall didn't fully reflect the brighter conditions, suggesting that consumers may have prioritised leisure and outdoor activities over shopping. Nevertheless, May's result marks a clear improvement on the -5.0% seen in the same month last year and contributes to a more stable trend in 2025. 'Encouragingly, consumer sentiment is on the rise, with more people feeling optimistic about their personal finances and the wider economy. Notwithstanding ongoing cost-of-living pressures, retailers in Wales will be looking to make hay while the sun shines – focusing on the right mix of experience, value, and convenience to convert seasonal footfall into sustained growth.'
