There was never any question that Marianne Faithfull was going to be a major celebrity. That was a view I shared with all my friends, back in the early 1960s, when I was at school at Leighton Park, Reading, and Marianne was a schoolgirl at St Joseph's convent school down the road.
She was one of the reasons so many of us wanted to join the town's Progress theatre, or act in our school plays and operas, in which she regularly took part – at least until the English master decided she was a disruptive influence. Even then, she was a fine young actor and a fine singer. We assumed she would become a folk star after watching her at Reading Folk Club, singing Spanish Is the Loving Tongue or Stanley and Dora, an anti-monarchist version of Frankie and Johnny that she had apparently learned from her father.
And, of course, there was competition to see who would be invited to her house to take her mum's dalmatians for a walk. She was the most beautiful girl any of us had met and had the charisma of a superstar.
It was 17 years before I met her again, in 1979, after the release of her classic album Broken English. She suggested meeting at the Ritz hotel, from which we were expelled because neither I nor her press officer was wearing a tie. Sitting in a nearby bar, she talked about her early career, saying: 'I felt terribly manufactured, and I was. There was probably something real they could have done, instead of the most obvious, with As Tears Go By. But I was only 17.'
She talked about her drug days, saying: 'I must have given up then, or I wouldn't have got into heroin.' And when congratulated on Broken English, with its sense of danger and powerful storytelling, she said: 'It's the first angry statement I've made. In the past I did what people told me.'
'To be frank,' she said, 'I always knew I was something extraordinary.' She wanted to be 'something real, not too arty or serious, but real, like BB King, Ma Rainey or Billie Holiday – except they are great. I may become a great star, which will be great. It's what I want to be and what I think I am.'

Taking to Instagram with a round-up of their getaway, JoJo posted a series of sweet pics to her 11.3million followers. 'Nothing beats wholesome & pure days like these', her caption began. She proceeded to detail each photo, with the first image showing Chris lifting her up and throwing her over his shoulder. 'Christopher being Christopher', she jokingly described it. Further pics included them shopping for sweets for her to take home to relatives across the pond and JoJo making tea inside their cottage. They also strolled hand-in-hand to greet the horses at the stables before riding, and tucked into a full English breakfast spread. JoJo's last photo was of her hand holding Chris's tightly. Describing the close-up romantic shot, she wrote: 'The one thing that can make everything better 🤍' The post quickly garnered thousands of likes, with fans flocking to the comments as they adjust to the 180 her life has taken since entering the doors of the CBB abode. During an interview with Capital FM this week, the Karma hitmaker said: 'I'm sure it's no secret to people, I am in a lovely relationship with a sweet boy named Christopher Hughes.' She also previously opened up to The Guardian about Chris, confessing: 'It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' Cristiano Ronaldo's deal with Al Nassr and the Portugal legend has been asked about the prospect of playing against Inter Miami star Lionel Messi before the end of his career Cristiano Ronaldo has not ruled out playing alongside long-time rival Lionel Messi before the end of his career, but has admitted it would be very difficult to do so, with time running out. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar is set to see his contract with Al Nassr expire at the end of the month. Both Ronaldo, 40, and Messi, 37, are likely in the twilight years of their careers with the former playing in the Saudi Pro League and the latter in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami. Nevertheless Ronaldo finished as top goalscorer in his division, while Messi has 10 goals in his 12 starts this season. Seeing the GOAT contenders playing in the same colours appears unlikely even with Ronaldo possibly eyeing a fresh move however. Although, the ex-Juventus sharpshooter did find some interest from Argentina ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States. It is clear Ronaldo has respect for the nation and his adversary however. Asked about the prospect, Ronaldo provided a thoughtful answer. "You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is from there," Ronaldo replied. "I have already been invited to play in the Club World Cup for an Argentine club. "You never know… the time is there. I am already 40 years old, but you never know. But I think it is very difficult. I have never been to Argentina, I want to go, I have a lot of affection for the Argentines. "And I have affection for Messi, we were rivals for many years, but I have already said that we were in that scenario for 15 years and I remember that before he didn't speak any English, I don't know if he does now. And I translated for him when they explained to us what we had to do at a gala. "I have affection for him, he has always treated me well and respected me as I respect him. I find it very difficult, but you never know." With less than a month remaining on Ronaldo's deal, there has been no shortage of speculation over his next step. To some degree, there was an expectation a deal would be set up to see him play in the Club World Cup, but Ronaldo has now suggested the possibility of that is noow over. "It's irrelevant, at this moment it doesn't make sense to talk about other things other than the national team," he said. "There have been a lot of contacts, I see things that make sense, others that don't, as the other guy says, you can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term. "It's a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had a lot of invitations." Divisive horror movie full of 'grotesque monsters' now streaming on BBC iPlayer
If you fancy making your weekend a gruesome one, look no further than a 'grotesque' horror movie from 2019 that's been added to BBC iPlayer. Directed by Andre Ovredal and co-written by Guillermo Del Toro, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was released in 2019 and became a box office success. Made on a budget of $25million (£18.5m), it performed better than expectations on its opening weekend six years ago and made back $104.5m (£77m) in total. Starring Zoe Colletti and Michael Garza, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is based on the book series of the same name, written by Alvin Schwartz, who died in 1992. The film follows the story of Stella, Auggie, and Chuck, who visit a haunted house and find a book of horror stories written by a long-deceased author named Sarah Bellows. Bellows' stories soon come to life, and the scary monsters and creatures they contain emerge in the real world, putting Stella, Auggie, and Chuck in more danger than they realise. In 2019, critics watching the film in its early weeks after release were broadly positive, with its current Rotten Tomatoes rating sitting at 78%. Fans received Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark positively as well, with 72% of Rotten Tomatoes users saying they would give the film a score of 7.0 out of 10 or more. On X, user @Muesquehere said that the introduction in the film of the creature known as The Pale Lady was among the most disturbing scenes of any horror film. @English_Shamar said: 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a really good movie to watch' when another user asked for the scariest horrors their followers had seen before. On Letterboxd, film critic Matt Singer said the movie was proof that 'it is possible to make a genuinely scary PG-13-rated horror movie'. User Tom Bowen also commented: 'The period setting is cool, all the kids are great performers, and I was surprised by just how creepy it was with some eerie designs and disturbing sequences.' Joining the cast of the 2019 film were Breaking Bad star Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, and Orange is the New Black actress Lorraine Toussaint, who played Yvonne in the Netflix series. The books upon which the film is based were released in 1981, 1984, and 1991 and were published shortly before author Schwartz's death at the age of just 64. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was famously illustrated by artist Stephen Gammell, whose drawings of 'grotesque monsters' became iconic among horror fans. As of 2017, the stories had sold a collective total of seven million copies and have appeared on numerous bestseller lists for children's and young adults' fiction.
