Greece's most walkable island revealed - with turquoise waters and unspoiled beauty
Dreaming of escaping to a Greek island?
A gorgeous and little-known island has been described as one of the country's most walkable destinations and tourists definitely won't need a car to get around.
Koufonisi island is one of three small islands in the Greek Cyclades and is sometimes known as Pano Koufonisi or Ano Koufonisi.
It's the most developed of the three islands but has remained unspoiled despite its proximity to bustling Santorini.
As Koufonisi is just 5.7 sq km wide, it's possible to explore the entire island on foot although tourists should avoid doing so during the heat of summer.
The Greece experts at Greeka.com describe Koufounisi as a 'heavenly' spot with 'unspoiled beaches' that 'rank among the best in the entire Cyclades'.
Amnos Beach is one of the island's best-rated on Tripadvisor with an incredible 4.6 out of 5 star rating.
'Babou' writes: 'This beach is the first thing you see when you arrive on the island by ferry. Huge, very clean [and] fine sand.'
Kimberley says: 'One of our favourite beaches in Koufonisia and certainly the best beach we've been to in the centre of a town. I could've stared at the water forever.'
Meanwhile, one reviewer describes Finikas Beach as a 'small piece of paradise' that 'seems almost unreal'.
They say: 'When I arrived, I was struck by the simplicity and beauty of the place. The golden sand blends perfectly with the crystal clear waters, which seem to invite you to dive immediately.'
As Koufonisi is a small island, there's not much to do beyond relaxing, so it's the perfect spot for those looking to unwind in peace and quiet.
How to get to Koufonisi
British tourists can take a direct flight to Athens before catching a ferry to Ano Koufonisi.
The ferry from Athens generally takes just over five hours. Island hoppers can also reach Koufonisi on ferries from Naxos, Paros or Amorgos.
What's the weather like in Koufonisi
The island is hottest during July and August when temperatures regularly soar beyond 30 degrees Celsius.
Average highs can also reach as high as 25 degrees Celsius in May, June and September.
Where to stay in Koufonisi
The majority of hotels on the island are located close to the port, making them easily accessible from the ferry.
Tourists who stay in this part of the island will be just a short walk from pretty Amnos Beach.

Flight attendant reveals why how you reply to their 'hello' is VERY important
Flight attendants always greet passengers when they board the plane but while it might seem like nothing more than a friendly welcome, there's actually a hidden meaning behind their hello. Wizz Air flight attendant Ioana Iachim (@ioanaiachim) has taken to TikTok to explain the real reason why your reply to their greeting matters a lot more than you might think. In her video caption, Ioana reveals that flight attendants aren't just greeting passengers out of 'politeness'. She says the real reason flight attendants often say hello to passengers is to 'check whether or not you are too drunk or sick to fly'. A drunk or unwell passenger might not be able to respond appropriately to the cabin crew's friendly greeting. The flight attendants are then able to keep an eye on the passenger or even stop them from boarding the plane. Many travellers were shocked by Ioana's revelation with one person saying they thought the crew greeted them because they 'fancied me'. Another person wrote: 'I never greet them back because I am an introvert'. Meanwhile another passenger said: 'They always ask me if I want to sit in the exit row so I must get an A+ during this test.' Travellers sitting in the exit row must be prepared to open the door in the event of an emergency. And one traveller said they tend to ask for help from the flight attendants when they board the plane. They wrote: 'I take that quick time to mention my severe flight anxiety, I've been flying Wizz Air as of lately and people are so lovely about it.'

UK beach that's 'nicer than Spain' is one of the most complained about in world
The beach is one of the UK's most popular spots but according to a new study, it's also a place that people have a lot of negative things to say about A beloved UK beach, famed for attracting crowds on sunny days, has been dubbed one of the world's most 'complained about' beaches. Cloudwards' recent study has pinpointed coastal areas that have left holidaymakers feeling let down, and a British seaside spot has cracked the top 10. Bournemouth beach, often praised for its beauty, has been singled out as one of the globe's most underwhelming stretches of sand. The research delved into TripAdvisor reviews for 200 leading beaches to discover which picturesque locations are failing to meet expectations. Bournemouth, nestled in Dorset, landed at number five, with gripes centring on its cleanliness and propensity for overcrowding. Despite its reputation as one of Britain's most popular beaches, it seems Bournemouth doesn't always live up to the hype. Spanning seven miles, Bournemouth's coastline is a magnet for Brits during the warmer months, drawing visitors from across the nation, reports the Express. However, this popularity has become a bone of contention, with a 'complaint score' of 52% on TripAdvisor specifically about overcrowding. The state of cleanliness at Bournemouth beach has also been criticised, with 31% of reviewers expressing disappointment. Voicing their concerns, one visitor said: "I have been to Bournemouth many times and have enjoyed it. On this occasion, I have never been so dismayed. "I have never seen so much rubbish left behind by the people using the beach. Food, plates, wrappers, bottles, towels, plastic bags and the list goes on. "I think the council need to get their act together and start patrolling the beach and either educate or fine these litterers heavily. It's a dump." On the other hand, not everyone shared this negative view of the beach. One visitor was full of praise on TripAdvisor, saying: "Beautiful sandy beach, probably the best in the UK! With the sunny weather we are having at the moment it is nicer than Spain! "The kids had a swim and the water was not too cold. All together, Bournemouth is a perfect family seaside escape destination. We plan to return this summer." Another commenter said: "Great beach to visit. Loads to do including; aquarium, shops, pier and food venues. "Lifeguards available on the beach. Clean and tidy layout, nothing negative that we found. Great facilities close by, would highly recommend." And a third added: "This is certainly one of the best beaches I have visited in the UK. We were blessed with beautiful weather so was just lovely to stroll across the sand."

Brits warned over little-known rule on Greek island that could delay flights for hours
British tourists holidaying in a popular Greek island this summer are being urged to double-check their flight times after one visitor was left stranded due to a strict airport curfew. In the face of mounting pressure to manage excessive visitor numbers, Greece and its surrounding islands welcomed a record-breaking 40.7 million international visitors in 2024 - a 12.8 per cent jump from the previous year. The surge in tourist numbers generated around €21.7 billion (£18.5 billion) in revenue for the country, with picture-postcard islands such as Corfu, Rhodes and Mykonos continuing to top summer getaway lists. Zante, known for its turquoise waters, bustling nightlife and family-friendly beaches, remains one of the most popular Greek islands. However, many visitors are unaware that night-time flights are heavily restricted to protect the island's loggerhead sea turtles. In a statement issued to the Mirror, Travel Republic said: 'This reflects a growing commitment across the travel industry to support responsible tourism and environmental conservation.' The curfew, which has been in place since the early 1990s, aims to minimise disruptions to their nesting patterns at night on Zante's southern beaches, especially during the busy summer months. In a video, which appears to have since been deleted, one TikTok user, @NKDZante, was caught off-guard by the curfew after her 10pm flight was delayed past the cut-off time. One TikTok user, @NKDZante, was caught off-guard by the curfew after her 10pm flight was delayed past the cut-off time She slammed the experience as a 'journey from hell', explaining that her group was forced to return to arrivals, reclaim their luggage and wait hours for emergency accommodation and transfers, as reported by the Mirror. She told followers that she was handed a €15 snack voucher for consolation, before warning holidaymakers they may encounter unexpected delays if they book 'really late flights' from the airport. The content creator added: 'I didn't know this obviously, but apparently, it has happened to six or seven flights in Zante Airport this summer.' Travel experts now urge holidaymakers to choose earlier departures when flying to or from Zakynthos, especially during peak nesting season, which runs through May to October.
