Mangroves strike roots in B Canal
Chennai: A once-polluted stretch of the Buckingham Canal at Kazhipattur has now turned into a thriving mangrove forest under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission. Spanning nearly 250m, the state forest department planted 12,500 mangrove saplings from five different species last year.
These saplings have now matured into a lush green cover.
Environment department secretary Supriya Sahu said that to support the saplings and improve water flow, they used the 'fishbone' technique — creating seven main structures with 87 channels and 80 distribution canals. "The sewage outflow was plugged years ago, and volunteers were roped in to monitor the growth of saplings. They, along with officials, took care of the saplings and recorded their growth," she said.
She added that the mangroves will act as a buffer in the coastal areas, particularly near the Muttukkadu region, and prevent flooding during the rising of sea levels.
The initiative was led by Chennai forest officer V A Saravanan and his team. Officials said the mangroves also help capture carbon, support biodiversity, and prevent land degradation. Some types of mangroves planted include avicennia marina, which is the most abundant species, followed by rhizophora apiculata, rhizophora mucronata, bruguiera cylindrica, and aegiceras corniculatum.

Sahu said they mapped the state's coastal mangrove cover through the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management. "We have identified potential areas where fresh planting is required, including Cuddalore and Ennore," she said, adding that at Ennore 1.6 lakh mangrove saplings will be planted along the Kosasthalaiyar Estuary and surrounding areas.
She added that a mangrove protection community will be created to monitor this.
The city saw among the lowest plantation efforts — just 18 hectares over the past 10 years. Fishermen from Ennore said mangrove success in the estuary will only be possible if the release of coolant water from thermal plants is stopped.
"The Ennore estuary is polluted with chemicals released by industries while the Tangedco plant is releasing its coolant water. The water cannot sustain any form of life. TNPCB must rein in all the industries," said M Raja, a fishermen community leader from Kattukuppam.

Over 1 lakh saplings planted across Virudhunagar
Massive sapling planting events were taken up across Virudhunagar district on Thursday on the occasion of World Environment Day. Virudhunagar Collector V. P. Jeyaseelan inaugurated sapling planting drive at the Eco-Park set up by Ramco Cements at Pandalgudi. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that a total of 1,12,350 saplings were planted in 360 places in the 11 blcoks in the district. The theme of the World Enviroment day this year was on ending plastic pollution. 'The present developmental activities were posing a major challenge to biodiversity. A consultation on the need to preserve biodiversity at all levels was held on the occasion. District Revenue Officer R. Rajendran, Special DRO (Land Acquisition for SIPCOT), Sengottaiyan, Project Director (District Rural Development Agency), Dhandapani, Sub-Collector, Sivakasi, N. Priya Ravichandran, governing council member of Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, Nirmala Raja, were among those who were present.

World Environment Day: Nearly 1,50,000 saplings planted in Coimbatore district
COIMBATORE: : Nearly 1.5 lakh saplings were planted in a single day in Coimbatore district on Thursday to mark the World Environment Day , said collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar. More than 30 varieties of native tree species have been planted. Various departments -- including panchayats, the corporation, revenue and forest -- conducted a plantation drive in both urban and rural areas. The administration used half-grown saplings, which were at least four to five feet tall, to ensure a high survival rate. Around 15,000 trees were planted at the Arignar Anna Co-operative Industrial Estate in Kittampalayam in Sulur taluk. Addressing the media after the inauguration of the drive, the collector stated, 'The district's forest cover and canopy cover will certainly improve with proper maintenance of these saplings. All these efforts are part of the state's Green Tamil Nadu Mission.' Meanwhile, the city corporation has targeted to plant 25,000 trees in all the five zones. The civic body's main priority is to utilise available spaces, including parks, government vacant lands, school grounds, open spaces and sites in Vellalore. Commenting on this plantation drive, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran told TOI, 'The main concept was to get 7-9 feet tall saplings. These will have low maintenance and a high survival rate. After a series of observations, it was found that short saplings were subjected to unintentional damage like being cut along with other invasive plant and getting crushed by stray cows or other animals. Watering them was a major challenge while bigger saplings can be watered only when required. The monsoon rains are sufficient for their growth in the upcoming months. All the saplings planted are ensured with geo-tagging and uploaded with photos in the Green Kovai Application.' As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, students from corporation schools showcased various experiments on rainwater harvesting, sustainable lifestyles, eco-friendly projects and robotics concepts. The corporation launched an awareness campaign encouraging the public to stop using single-use polythene bags and other plastic materials. Private colleges, NGOs and various community organisations in the city organised awareness programmes, including student rallies.

Minister urges public to get involved in activities for protecting environment
Tourism Minister R. Rajendran, who participated in the World Environment Day celebrations on Thursday, urged the public to be involved in protecting the environment by at least planting a sapling. The Minister participated in the celebrations held at the Salem Collectorate and flagged off the World Environment Day awareness rally in which school and college students participated. He planted saplings at the Collectorate and also distributed cloth bags to the public. Speaking at the function, the Minister said that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is taking steps to increase Tamil Nadu's green cover to 33% and implemented the Green Tamil Nadu Mission project. Through this project, saplings are being planted across the State. In the Salem district, sapling planting works are taking place under various programmes. To increase the awareness about the environment, saplings were planted in the Collectorate and saplings and cloth bags were distributed to school and college students. 'This day is not only for celebrations and it stresses the importance of protecting the environment,' Mr. Rajendran added. Stating that it is the duty of everyone to leave this world as green and healthy for the next generation, the Minister said that everyone should be involved in protecting the environment by planting saplings, avoiding plastics, using public transport, and creating awareness of the environment among the people around us. 'At least everyone should plant a sapling, which will ensure our contribution for the environment. The public shall plant saplings in the empty spaces around their houses and maintain them to make Tamil Nadu as green as possible,' the Minister added. Later, the Minister inaugurated the mass sapling planting drive at Kitchipalayam. District Collector R. Brindha Devi, Mayor A. Ramachandran, zonal chairmen, councillors, and officials participated.
