Mavericks lose Daniel Gafford to knee injury early in loss to. Kings in latest blow since Luka Dončić trade
The Dallas Mavericks are dealing with yet another injury.
Mavericks big man Daniel Gafford had to be helped off the court on Monday night in their 129-128 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings after his right knee buckled while he tried to set a screen. Gafford crashed down to the court at the American Airlines Arena and immediately reached for his knee, clearly in a lot of pain.
Gafford was eventually helped off the floor, and didn't put any weight on his leg as he did so. The team ruled him out with a knee sprain before halftime.

While further specifics on Gafford's injury are not yet known, it marks the latest that the team is dealing with at the position. The Mavericks' other three big men — Anthony Davis, Derek Lively and Dwight Powell — are all out with respective injuries, too.
Davis went down with an adductor injury in his debut with the team on Saturday after the stunning blockbuster trade that landed him in Dallas in exchange for star Luka Dončić ahead of the deadline. He is expected to miss multiple weeks recovering. Lively is dealing with an ankle injury, and Powell is out with a hip injury.
Gafford, who is in his second season with the Mavericks, entered Monday's game averaging 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. The 26-year-old is in the second year of a three-year, $40 million deal he first signed with the Washington Wizards.
The Mavericks entered Monday's game coming off back-to-back wins. Fans, however, are still incredibly frustrated with general manager Nico Harrison — who has faced massive protests outside of the arena after his decision to trade Dončić earlier this month.

The Mavericks blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, and DeMar DeRozan drilled a bucket with about three seconds left to force overtime. They then lost in the extra period after DeRozan hit a 13-footer in the final seconds, which gave Sacramento the one-point win.
DeRozan led Sacramento with 42 points and seven rebounds in the loss, which moved the Kings to 27-26 on the season. Zach LaVine and Malik Monk each added 17 points, and Domantas Sabonis finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 30 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the loss. Spencer Dinwiddie finished with 20 points off the bench, and Klay Thompson added 19 points on five 3-pointers. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Dallas, which now sits at 28-26 on the year.

NBA legend Don Nelson wears Luka Doncic shoes to protest 'tremendous mistake' by Mavericks
Don Nelson, the former Dallas Mavericks head coach, accepted the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award before Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Nelson, who has been living in Hawaii since being away from the game, carried a message with him for the franchise he used to lead on the court. During his press conference, Nelson made sure everyone in the building knew that he was wearing Luka Doncic's new shoes from Nike. Why? He thinks the Mavericks and GM Nico Harrison made a "tremendous mistake" trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers. "I want everybody to know I'm wearing Luka's shoes, his new shoes from Nike…and I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas," Nelson told the crowd. "I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. I want everybody to know that." Nelson is a part of a mass group that believes Harrison made the wrong move in trading Doncic to Los Angeles, which was one of the most shocking trades in recent memory anywhere in professional sports. Mavericks fans let Harrison know it, too, as chants filled stadiums home and away, while a group of fans even held a fake funeral outside American Airlines Center days after the deal went down in February. Dallas, though, may have gotten bailed out after the NBA Draft Lottery saw them win the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavericks will presumably take Duke's Cooper Flagg later this month. Still, Mavericks fans weren't happy to see Doncic, who helped lead the team to the NBA Finals last year, moving out west. While the Lakers didn't make a deep NBA Playoffs run, Doncic had similar numbers with the Lakers compared to the Mavericks. He averaged 28.2 points per game (28.1 in Dallas) with 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game over 28 contests. Nelson and many others have their opinions, but what's done is done now for the Mavericks. Time will tell who exactly won the trade. Nelson is a Hall of Famer coach, and one of the best in league history with San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich being the only one with more coaching wins all-time. He had 1,335 regular-season wins and 75 more in the playoffs during his time coaching the Milwaukee Bucks (1976-87), Golden State Warriors (1988-94), New York Knicks (1995-96), Mavericks (1997-2005), and Warriors once more from 2006-10. Cowboys' George Pickens Trade 'Worth The Risk'
Cowboys' George Pickens Trade 'Worth The Risk' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys needed an "explosive" No. 2 receiver opposite CeeDee Lamb, and the franchise's answer was trading for Pittsburgh Steelers' George Pickens. Advertisement The move for George was met with what we think was an odd reaction. Some were lauding it, given that the Cowboys showed they want to get better, yet others were shaking their head at the move due to his on-and-off-field incidents, despite those same people urging Dallas to make a trade. Now that the dust has settled and George has done nothing but positive things at OTAs both on and off the field, Bleacher Report has ranked what it thinks are 25 of the best moves this offseason, with Dallas' trade for Pickens landing at No. 11. "The Dallas Cowboys head into every season with Texas-sized aspirations, but the team also had a 10-gallon hole at wide receiver opposite CeeDee Lamb," Bleacher Report writes. "George Pickens had an up-and-down three years in Pittsburgh, but Pickens never had less than 800 receiving yards in a season and the potential to be an excellent No. 2 receiver in Dallas. For a Day 2 pick in 2026 (plus a pick swap), Pickens is more than worth the 'risk.' George Pickens At AttBy Tony Fisher Given how productive Pickens was as the lone hand in the Steelers' offense, which had below-par quarterback play for much of his time there, he now has Dak Prescott. Advertisement Not only that, he has a teammate in Lamb who, despite Pickens' talent, should command the defense's attention. Hello, one-on-ones for George. If things pan out the way Dallas and Pickens hope in 2025, and he plays a key role in the franchise getting back to the playoffs with, say, 800-ish yards and a handful of touchdowns, we might look back on his trade this offseason as one of the best ones a team has made. Yes, it might be wishful thinking, but such is George's talent, and there is every chance it eventuates. Cowboys should pounce as soon as 2x Pro Bowler owed $36 million hits open market
Cowboys should pounce as soon as 2x Pro Bowler owed $36 million hits open market The Dallas Cowboys were saving money for a situation such as this. As it stands currently, the Cowboys have over $32 million in available cap space for 2025 according to Over the Cap. That's the seventh-highest amount in the league and while a ton of that is earmarked for the several pending long-term deals the team has to negotiate, they should not feel the need to hoard that space. Rather, they should also consider spending some of it on a short-term investment and that appears ready to fall onto their radar. The Green Bay Packers have announced they are going to release cornerback Jaire Alexander, a common move when a club is looking to drum up trade activity before finally waving the white flag on contract negotiations. The Packers have been trying to get Alexander to accept a lower amount after signing him to an extension entering 2022. He's oft-injured, appearing in just 14 games the last two seasons, and was given the four-year $84 million extension after an injury-plagued 2021 season. He has two years and $36 million remaining on the deal; $1.3 million in game-day bonuses, $700 in a 2026 roster bonus and $16.15 million and $18.15 million in base salary each of the next two years. There will likely be some level of interest from multiple teams, and Dallas should be one of them. Yes, the Cowboys are in the middle of paying their own oft-injured All-Pro corner a huge sum of money in Trevon Diggs. Yes the Cowboys need to extend a new contract to All-Pro DaRon Bland as he enters the final season of his rookie contract. Yes the Cowboys drafted Shavon Revel in the third round with eyes on him being a future starter. Yes the Cowboys traded for Kaiir Elam to play out the final year of his first-round rookie deal. It doesn't matter; there's never a such thing as having too many good corners. Make no mistake, Alexander is still a very good NFL corner. He had one truly elite year, 2020, but every other year on his resume his grades have been very good, including when Pro Football Focus gave him 75.9 and 75.2 overall grades each of his last two truncated seasons. Adding Alexander to the mix would allow the Cowboys to start the season from a position of strength at cornerback instead of just working to get by. Alexander and Elam could man the boundary corners with Bland at the slot, while the team awaits the return from injury of Diggs and Revel, who is still recovering from an ACL injury that stole most of his final season at East Carolina. Neither of the two would need to be rushed back, and Revel could spend the season being brought along slowly instead of being thrust into an immediate contributor unless he warranted such. Elam could rotate to backup, which he was with Buffalo, when either Diggs or Revel were ready to shine. As for compensation, Dallas should bite the bullet. If Alexander wants a prove-it deal that would allow him to hit free agency in March when all 32 teams are flush with cash, Dallas is a team that could withstand the hit from a one-year contract, or add void years to spread the cap hit over two seasons. If he demands a multi-year deal, they can creatively build provisions that gives the bulk of money up front while allowing them enough room to make a long-term decision on Diggs' contract after the season while still allocating money for Bland's extension. Many think the Cowboys aren't ready to compete for a championship this year, but if they had a stacked secondary along with the stacked pass rush rotation they've built, along with two certifiable stud WRs in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, why would they not be seen as among the best teams in the NFL?
