SK Telecom to offer free USIM replacement to all customers after network hacking incident

SK Telecom Co., South Korea's leading mobile carrier, said Friday that it will offer free universal subscriber identity module replacements to all customers, following a recent network hacking incident involving the potential leak of subscriber information.
SK Telecom Chief Executive Officer Ryu Young-sang made the announcement during a briefing in Seoul on the hacking incident that occurred last Friday.
"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this incident has caused to our customers and the public. As a precautionary measure, we will offer free USIM replacements, including eSIMs, to any customer who requests one," Ryu said.
The replacement service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Customers who were subscribed as of last Friday, when the company identified signs of a security breach, can receive replacements at the company's T World stores nationwide and airport roaming centers.
SK Telecom previously confirmed that a malicious code installed by hackers had led to a suspected leak of USIM-related data. The USIM, which stores personal authentication information used to access mobile networks, can be exploited to allow criminals to clone users' identities or intercept text messages.
The company said it is taking the matter seriously and will continue to enhance its data protection measures as investigations proceed. (Yonhap)

The company attributed the stellar performance to its core mobile business, which saw revenue increase 1.6 percent on-year to 1.78 trillion won, backed by a sharp increase in 5G subscribers. KT appears to have benefited from a surge in new users following SK Telecom's recent data security data breach that triggered widespread customer defections. As of June, KT's mobile subscribers stood at about 27.49 million, up 2.59 million from a year earlier and 1.05 million from the previous quarter, just before the April cyberattack. Fixed-line business revenue increased 1.4 percent, with high-speed internet subscribers reaching 10 million in May, driving a 2.1 percent boost in related sales. KT's subsidiaries also lifted the bottom line. Its property arm KT Estate saw revenue grow 2 percent on-year on stronger demand for offices and hotels. KT said profits were also buoyed by sales from the Eastpole mixed-used complex redevelopment in eastern Seoul. The company's cloud unit KT Cloud posted a 23 percent revenue increase, thanks to higher demand for data center co-location service from global clients and an increase in AI cloud sales to corporate customers. 'We were able to achieve a significant earnings improvement thanks to steady growth in our core telecommunication business, coupled with strong results from our key portfolio,' said Chief Financial Officer Jang Min. 'We will continue to accelerate our transformation into an AICT company to ensure sustainable growth while implementing our value-up plan without delay.'

Officials of US President Donald Trump's administration considered demanding that South Korea raise its defense spending to 3.8 percent of its gross domestic product during tariff negotiations, a news report said Saturday, citing internal US government documents. US officials also weighed the idea of requiring South Korea to publicly support operational flexibility of the US Forces Korea to better deter China, The Washington Post reported, though it is not clear whether their suggestions were actually discussed in the negotiations with South Korea that were concluded last month. The documents indicated that the Trump's administration might intend to use tariffs to help achieve a range of national security goals beyond its stated objective to reduce America's trade deficits and boost domestic manufacturing, the newspaper noted. "The US also wanted Seoul to boost defense spending to 3.8 percent of GDP, up from 2.6 percent last year, and to increase its $1 billion-plus contribution to cover the annual costs of basing the roughly 28,500 US troops in South Korea," the newspaper said. It also cited an early draft of a "US-Korea agreement," which suggested, "The South Korean government should be urged to endorse a change in the positioning of US troops stationed there under the United States Forces Korea command." Moreover, the document included a requirement that "Korea will issue a political statement supporting flexibility for USFK force posture to better deter China while continuing to deter (North Korea)." Pressure has been building on Korea to boost its defense spending, as the Pentagon has said that Korea and other Asian allies are subject to the "global standard" of spending 5 percent of their GDP, amid expectations that Trump might demand a hefty rise in Seoul's share of the cost for stationing USFK. South Korea's defense budget this year stands at around 61.2 trillion won ($44.2 billion), which is about 2.32 percent of its GDP, according to Seoul's defense ministry. Speculation has also persisted that the Trump administration might seek greater strategic flexibility of American troops in South Korea, as the Pentagon seeks allies' greater "burden-sharing" and prioritizes deterring an increasingly assertive China. Strategic flexibility is a hotly debated issue that resurfaced as Seoul and Washington are envisioning the "modernization" of their alliance. It refers to the use of US troops in South Korea for a wider range of expeditionary operations, including roles for China-related contingencies -- a move further away from their traditional dedication to deterring North Korean threats. The issues of Korea's defense spending and the operational scope of USFK could be topics for the summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Trump, which is expected to take place later this month, as Seoul and Washington are working on shaping the summit agenda and other details. Hanmi Global to manage upgrade of Romania's Cernavoda Nuclear Plant

Korean construction project management firm Hanmi Global announced Wednesday that it has secured a contract to oversee infrastructure work at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. The 10 billion won ($7.2 million) contract was awarded by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, which is leading the refurbishment of Unit 1 at the 706-megawatt heavy water reactor. The project aims to extend the 30-year-old plant's operating life by another three decades. Under the contract, Hanmi Global will provide comprehensive project management services, including construction supervision, cost and risk control, regulatory compliance and technical advisory services for building facilities such as radioactive waste storage. 'This Cernavoda project marks Korea's first overseas contract for the life extension of aging nuclear power plants. It is expected to pave the way for diversifying Korea's nuclear power export strategies in the future,' said Noh Hee-sang, head of Hanmi Global's nuclear business division. The project is Hanmi Global's first in the nuclear sector since launching its dedicated nuclear division last year. In 2022, the company acquired UK-based project management firm Walker Sime to leverage its proven track record in nuclear power plant construction. 'Using this project as a stepping stone, Hanmi Global plans to expand its business model across the entire lifecycle of nuclear power plants, targeting not only Europe, but also the Middle East and Asia,' Noh added.
