Monroe County Commissioner election Q&A: Hoover
While Mark Brant tries to get the seat back, Republicans Dale Biniecki, Dwayne Dobbs, and Democrat Danielle Hoover are throwing their hats into the race. The Monroe News spoke with each of them about what they would bring to the board of commissioners if they were elected.
The Monroe News sent questions to each candidate. Answers have been edited for length and clarity.
These are Hoover's answers:
What previous experience has best prepared you for this role?
I am writing as myself only. I am not representing Washtenaw County, the MI Board of Social Work, or any other person, group, or organization that I am affiliated with. All views here are my own. City of Milan, Monroe Co. resident, 13+ years. Washtenaw Co. CMH (county gov't), 12+ years. MI Board of Social Work member, 5 years, vice chair, since 2023. NASW MI member. Monroe Co. NAACP member. MI Democratic Party member. AFSCME 3052 member/steward, delegate to Huron Valley Area Labor Federation, also recording secretary there. Both kids go to Milan Area Schools K-present. Gold Star Family Member. Also, this is my fourth time running for this.
What motivated you to run for county commissioner?
As the late, great, rest in power Congressman John Lewis said, 'Speak up, speak out, get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.' I'm here to do what Congressman Lewis said. I was assigned this mountain to show someone it can be moved, and I need to be in this elected capacity to do that.
What do you see as the county's top three priorities over the next four years?
Mental health, unions, veterans. I have been a licensed social worker since 2011, so mental health is something I'm very passionate about. I have been a dues paying AFSCME member since 2013; first in local 2733 as a supports coordinator, then moved to local 3052 when I became a supervisor in 2022. Veterans always have a special place in my heart because one of my brothers was one. My brother Spc. Levi Hoover was killed in action in Iraq April 7, 2007. After that, it kind of became, be all the things you love most about the person who is gone. That's why veterans are special to me, and I would be so honored to do work in this area in an elected capacity.
What's your stance on zoning reform and affordable housing development?
Per endhomelessness.org/, 'the number of hours the average minimum-wage worker in the U.S must work (2.4 full time jobs) to afford a one-bedroom rental home at the fair market rent,' is 95. That's not right. Housing costs are not congruent with what minimum-wage workers currently earn. Affordable housing should be accessible and available to those who need it.
How will you keep residents informed about decisions that affect them?
As a social worker, a large part of my job is to engage with people. I'd be able to carry those skills forward to talk with anybody, anytime, anywhere, at a mutually convenient time. For example, if elected, I'd like to go on ride alongs with public utilities such as trash removal services. Not just in District 2, I'd like to try that across the county.
What steps will you take to avoid conflicts of interest in office?
As a licensed social worker, I am required to adhere to the NASW Code of Ethics and other applicable laws and policies. I also serve as the vice chair of the MI Board of Social Work. Having a code of ethics that I am required to follow is something that separates me from other candidates, currently and most recently.

Why should residents vote for you?
I am appropriately qualified, I have relevant, applicable experience working in government and a state board, and am committed to appropriately filling that seat. District 2 could use some clean up, and I'm ready. You know what they say about Hoovers, they really clean up.

Miss United States accuses Florida congressman of threatening to release sex tapes
The reigning Miss United States claims a Florida congressman threatened to release sex tapes and nude videos of her after she ended their relationship. Lindsey Langston, 25, says U.S. Rep. Cory Mills, a 45-year-old Republican, grew increasingly upset after she broke off their relationship in February, Politico reported Tuesday. In addition to her pageant career, Langston is a Republican state committee member. In several messages on multiple platforms, Mills threatened to spread explicit videos of Langston and also made vague threats against any men who dated her in the future, according to a police report first obtained by D.C. outlet Drop Site News. 'Let him put his actions behind his mouth. I can send him a few videos of you as well. Oh, I still have them,' Mills allegedly wrote in one message cited in the report. Langston said she ended her relationship with Mills after he was accused in February of assaulting another woman in Washington, D.C. No charges were filed in that case. In a statement to The Hill on Wednesday, Mills denied Langston's accusations, claiming they 'misrepresent the nature of my interactions.' It's both a state crime in Florida and a federal crime to threaten to release explicit material of someone. Mills himself voted for the Take It Down Act, which prohibits 'nonconsensual online publication of intimate visual depictions of individuals.' Miss United States, the pageant Langston won last year, is not affiliated with Miss USA or Miss America. _____

Trump Media Is Testing an AI Search Engine Powered by Perplexity
President Donald Trump's media company, Trump Media, is beta-testing a new AI search feature, Truth Search AI, on the Truth Social platform. The Florida-based company announced the news on Wednesday in a press release. Trump Media and Technology Group is perhaps best known for its social-media program Truth Social. The company is separate from the New York-based Trump Organization. "We're proud to partner with Perplexity to launch our public Beta testing of Truth Social AI, which will make Truth Social an even more vital element in the Patriot Economy," Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes said in the statement. "We plan to robustly refine and expand our search function based on user feedback as we implement a wide range of additional enhancements to the platform." Truth Search AI is now available on the Web version of Truth Social and will begin public beta testing on the Truth Social iOS and Android apps at an unnamed future date. Representatives for Trump Media and Perplexity didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Will results be politically biased? In today's divided political landscape, one immediate concern is that a search engine from a conservative president's media company will select only search results that favor conservative opinions. UAE state-owned newspaper The National conducted searches using the new product and reported that the AI-generated answers, perhaps unsurprisingly, source conservative-leaning media outlets. But 404Media was able to get some possibly surprising results. When reporters asked how the American economy is doing, the new search engine said it was "currently facing significant headwinds, with signs of slowdown." The media outlet pressed further, asking if the president's international tariffs are to blame. "Recent tariff increases in the United States have generally had a negative effect on economic growth and employment, raising costs for businesses and consumers while providing only limited benefits to some manufacturing sectors," Truth Search AI replied. As CNET noted in a review, it calls itself the world's first "answer engine," and instead of showing a list of links, it pulls info directly from the sources and summarizes that information. The company has made headlines for how it acquires its content. In June, the BBC threatened to sue Perplexity for unauthorized use of its content, alleging the artificial intelligence company reproduced BBC material "verbatim." At the time, Perplexity gave a statement to the Financial Times calling the BBC's claims "manipulative and opportunistic" and that the broadcasting giant fundamentally doesn't understand how the technology, internet or IP law works. Perplexity also alleged that the threat of litigation shows "how far the BBC is willing to go to preserve Google's illegal monopoly for its own self-interest." As 404Media notes, Forbes, the New York Times, New York Post and the Dow Jones have all accused Perplexity of plagiarism, and News Corp's Dow Jones & Co., which publishes the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post sued Perplexity in 2024 for copyright infringement.
