U.S. Ambassador to Israel: A Dark Stain on the History of American Diplomacy

The interview of the American ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, with British journalist Piers Morgan was marked by sarcasm and sharpness, clearly challenging the norms of "traditional diplomatic language," and lacked the most basic principles of diplomacy, politics, and human empathy, especially in the context of discussing a real humanitarian catastrophe. This crisis has been condemned worldwide, even within Israeli and American circles. Huckabee's accusation that Hamas is stealing and monopolizing food is without clear evidence, relying on Israeli photos and reports whose accuracy has not been verified. Meanwhile, international humanitarian organizations (such as the United Nations and the World Food Program) have not issued reports condemning Hamas for such claims. The official American stance calls for facilitating aid access and halting escalation. However, Huckabee's statements take a clear ideological turn, fully aligned with Netanyahu's policy and the far-right Zionist agenda, exonerating their actions toward Gaza without addressing civilian rights or the international context. Mike Huckabee's statements, and I don't understand how this person represents the United States in all its facets, reflected a biased, non-diplomatic, and inhumane stance during his interview with the respected journalist Piers Morgan. He appeared to align with extreme Israeli positions, bypassing any official, balanced American approach. In his recent appearance with British journalist Piers Morgan, Huckabee revealed a biased and shocking stance, wrapped in sarcastic and inhumane rhetoric regarding the worsening humanitarian disaster in Gaza. His statements, where he attributed hunger in Gaza to Hamas, included shameful mocking expressions, such as saying Hamas members 'eat well' and need 'Ozempic' – a weight loss drug – instead of food. Huckabee's tone lacked any empathy for the more than 2 million people trapped in Gaza, suffering from hunger, bombing, and forced displacement. The sarcasm he used, comparing medical terms during a humanitarian crisis considered one of the worst in the century, demonstrates an unacceptable disregard from a representative of a country that claims to defend human rights. What is most egregious about Huckabee's statements is his complete neglect of the deaths of journalists in Gaza, including Mohamed Khalidi, who worked with Sahat News, joining the five martyrs from Al Jazeera: reporters Anas Al-Sharif and Mohamed Qareqa, photographers Ibrahim Dhaher and Moamen Alawa, and their assistant Mohamed Nofal, especially the last journalist from Al Jazeera who was recently killed in Israeli airstrikes, despite wearing clear press attire and being in areas known to be free of military activities. The ambassador's silence here can only be interpreted as a full endorsement of the occupation's narrative and a denial of the fundamental principles of press freedom and civilian protection during conflicts. Al Jazeera documented the deaths of several of its crew members during the war, amid international silence and media complicity. Huckabee's disregard further strengthens the image that the U.S. administration is not just biased toward Israel but is complicit in covering up war crimes. Many observers have described Huckabee's performance as 'more Zionist than Netanyahu' – and this is not an exaggeration. While Netanyahu sometimes uses strategic and convoluted language to soften the actions of his government, Huckabee spoke bluntly, disregarding international law, civilian rights, and even the most basic elements of diplomatic discourse. Despite Huckabee's blunt responses, journalist Piers Morgan maintained a calm and respectful tone, asking the ambassador about the humanitarian situation and civilian casualties. However, Huckabee chose to avoid or mock, without providing objective answers, revealing his lack of argument, humanitarian drive, and even moral coherence. Mike Huckabee's statements, and his deliberate neglect of civilian victims and targeted journalists – especially the last Al Jazeera journalist – expose a clear antagonistic stance against truth and justice, reflecting an ideological bias that goes beyond political representation to the point of normalizing genocide and ethnic cleansing. This interview represents a dark stain on American diplomacy, confirming what many believe: that Washington is no longer merely an ally of Israel, but actively participates in marketing its narrative and justifying its atrocities, even at the cost of the values it claims to represent. Additionally, Huckabee's dismissal of the United Nations and international sympathy for the people of Gaza, along with his complete lack of basic human or paternal feelings, shows a man who has lost all sense of masculinity and humanity, proving he is more Zionist than Netanyahu. There are American ambassadors around the world who are paragons of diplomacy, politics, humanity, decency, and noble manners. I have interacted with and worked alongside dozens of American ambassadors and diplomats globally, and they were exemplars of diplomacy, politics, humanity, civility, and grace. What Mike Huckabee revealed in his interview with Piers Morgan is not just a sarcastic or biased stance in favor of Israel, but a denial of all human values, especially regarding sympathy for the people of Gaza, who are facing one of the greatest humanitarian crises in contemporary history. The American ambassador to Israel was expected to represent a country that claims to support human rights, but he proved, in this interview, that he is not much different from Netanyahu's ideology, and as many have described, he is "more Zionist than Netanyahu." Huckabee's comments on the Gaza crisis and his disregard for the human suffering of the citizens, including the journalists who were martyred, came at a time when there is a growing international sympathy for the people of Gaza. International organizations, including the United Nations, have released shocking reports on the scale of destruction, killing, and forced displacement, condemning what they call "Israeli war crimes" against civilians. Despite this, the American ambassador chose to deny and evade acknowledgment of this bitter truth. The international stances sharply contrast with Huckabee's statements, as he completely ignored the calls of the United Nations, human rights organizations, and other international bodies urging for a halt to the bombing and the opening of humanitarian corridors. He deliberately ignored these international positions, instead promoting Netanyahu's viewpoint, even if it came at the expense of humanitarian values. In that interview, Huckabee appeared far removed from humanity and fatherhood. He showed no signs of sensitivity to the suffering of children and women in Gaza. Instead, he sarcastically addressed issues that should be handled with a sense of responsibility, especially concerning the daily loss of blood and lives in Gaza. There is a vast difference between diplomacy that seeks peaceful solutions and mocking the suffering of civilians. Huckabee was expected to present a more balanced image and convey the accurate picture reflected in the international reports. Instead, he chose the complete opposite. The ambassador, who should represent American values—justice and human rights—proved that he lacks the most basic elements of masculinity, humanity, and diplomacy, making his stance a platform to support Israeli crimes. In contrast to this ambassador, who lacks diplomatic sensitivity, there are many American ambassadors around the world who represent the United States with competence and realism, embodying the highest levels of humanity and diplomacy, working to advance their country's interests through constructive dialogue and peaceful solutions. While Huckabee appears as an extremist defender of Israel's policies, with no regard for international society or human principles, these other American diplomats present an alternative face of calm, balanced diplomacy that focuses on the public good without compromising the core values of humanity. Finally, Huckabee's performance in his interview with the distinguished and impartial journalist Piers Morgan, who deserves all appreciation and respect, does not reflect the official American position but rather a clear extremism and a departure from well-established diplomatic norms. His disregard for the suffering of the people of Gaza and his sarcastic comments about hunger expose his bias and lack of basic human empathy. Such stances confirm what many critics say: he is more Zionist than Netanyahu, and in no way does he reflect the moderate American viewpoint that supports a just solution and the protection of human rights in the region. At the same time, it should not be overlooked that many American ambassadors demonstrate diplomatic and humanitarian competence, working hard to spread peace and justice across the world. muwaffaq@

'Viable' chance for Ukraine ceasefire thanks to Trump: UK PM

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday said there was now a "viable" chance for a Ukraine ceasefire, ahead of talks between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin. Starmer said Ukraine's military backers, the so-called Coalition of the Willing, had drawn up workable military plans in case of a ceasefire but were also ready to add pressure on Russia through sanctions. "For three and a bit years this conflict has been going, we haven't got anywhere near... a viable way of bringing it to a ceasefire," Starmer told a meeting of European leaders. "Now we do have that chance, because of the work that the (US) president has put in," he told the video conference he led alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron. The call was joined by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky from Germany, and US Vice President JD Vance, who is currently visiting the UK. While Starmer said Friday's Alaska meeting between Trump and Putin was "hugely important", he reiterated that there "should be no negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine". "This is a critical moment, we have to combine active diplomacy on the one hand with military support to Ukraine and pressure on Russia," he said. The coalition has drawn up military plans "which are now ready in a form that can be used if we get to that ceasefire", Starmer added. He said Britain and other European allies also "stand ready to increase pressure on Russia" through sanctions and "wider measures" if necessary.
