How Halle Berry Became The New Face Of Menopause

H alle Berry knows what you think of her. The first (and so far only) Black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress, the former model and fixture on 'most beautiful people' lists is all too familiar with being best known for her performances and her looks. But these three words, shouted on Capitol Hill in May 2024 while surrounded by a bipartisan group of senators (all women), might change that: ' I'm in menopause! '
'For so long people have put me in this sex symbol box,' Berry says. 'For someone like me to speak about going through menopause, which has been so stigmatized, if I can say, 'Hey, it's sexy to arrive at this time of our life, it's actually a privilege to age.' . . . I hope I'm giving [women] the courage to stand tall and accept that we don't have to stay eternally 30. I mean, who wants to stay eternally 30?'
In her sixth decade, Berry is laser-focused on women's health. It's a mission of both advocacy and entrepreneurship that began when her own perimenopause was misdiagnosed as herpes and she realized just how much more awareness both doctors and patients needed about this crucial (and, for those who live long enough, universal) life stage.
Berry's vehicle is Respin, originally a wellness and exercise website she founded in 2020 but which relaunched this February as a menopause-focused health care company. With less than $5 million in funding from investors including Khosla Ventures, Respin is still in its earliest days—telehealth visits just launched in July and revenue is still mostly nonexistent—but she's feeling invigorated by the task of growing and scaling her startup.
'This is my greatest act,' she says. 'And I couldn't have imagined that this would be my greatest act because I think as women, we've been afraid to age.'
Berry is one of the 200 entrepreneurs, change makers and leaders on Forbes ' fifth annual 50 Over 50 list who have come to see their age as an asset rather than a liability. Re-spin.com started as a website offering at-home workouts (Berry launched it during the pandemic), exercise gear like strength bands and jump ropes, and a community of like-minded women. Today, the company is dual-pronged. One side sells community memberships (for $149 a year, users get access to private chats with other women going through menopause, live Q&As with doctors and 'early access' to Berry's favorite wellness gadgets) and, through a partnership with women's intimacy company Joylux, 'intimacy gel' (lube) for $21 or $45 and a vaginal wand with red light therapy—to help with vaginal dryness and pelvic floor functioning—for $495.
Over on the Respin Health side of the business, women seeking answers about their menopause symptoms can book a 30-minute telehealth visit with a menopause-trained physician or nurse practitioner for $55. Ally Tam Tumasova, Respin Health's cofounder and CEO, says women can also answer a detailed questionnaire to receive a personalized lifestyle plan ($20), sign up for group coaching sessions to help stick with that plan ($45 per month) or pay $100 for a one-on-one session.
Frédérique Dame, a general partner at GV (formerly Google Ventures) and an early investor in Respin competitor Midi Health, which was founded by 50 Over 50 alumna Joanna Strober, says that currently there is more demand for menopause medicine than there are practitioners available. In the U.S., 1.3 million women enter menopause every year, while fewer than 2,500 physicians are certified in menopause medicine.
Globally, the market—which includes hormone re­placement therapy, prescription and OTC drugs, dietary supplements and nutritional advice, was valued at $17 billion last year and is projected to grow to $24 billion within five years, according to Grand View Research. 'It's a huge market,' Dame says.
And a broadly defined one. Which is why Berry is aiming wide: 'We are trying to be your one-stop shop for all things menopause, because what I've learned on this journey is that every woman 'menopauses' in a different way.'

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla is among those expected at a fundraiser President Trump is attending Friday at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, sources told CBS News. The fundraiser for the pro-Trump super political action committee MAGA Inc. aims to raise about $25 million, one of the sources said. One day prior to the event, Mr. Trump sent letters to pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, demanding they lower U.S. drug prices to more evenly match what other countries pay. The White House's letters to 17 drug companies, including AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi, asked for commitments within 60 days to sell drugs for Medicaid patients and all new drugs at "most favored nation" rates. The president posted images of the letters to Truth Social. Mr. Trump signed an executive order in May telling federal officials to draw up "most favored nation" regulations unless pharmaceutical companies made progress toward cutting prices. This week's letters — which were addressed to Bourla and the other CEOs — accused the drugmakers of promising "more of the same" since then. The president said Friday he's "gone to war with the drug companies and, frankly, other countries" on the drug price issue. "I think we're going to be very successful fairly soon. We'll have drug prices coming down by 500, 600 800 even 1,200 percent," Mr. Trump said in an interview with Newsmax on Friday afternoon. The high cost of prescription drugs has vexed both parties for decades. Proposals to tie drug prices for U.S. patients to the typically much-lower rates charged in other developed countries have floated around for years, but the idea has faced some legal pushback. Meanwhile, drugmakers argue price caps could discourage innovation by making it harder to pay for research and development for new drugs. The industry also argues that Americans tend to have access to more groundbreaking drugs than residents of foreign countries with stricter price regulations — and says high drug prices are just one part of a broader trend of higher healthcare spending in the U.S. Bourla has engaged with Mr. Trump in the past. Pfizer was one of the drugmakers that was picked to rapidly develop COVID-19 vaccines in the first Trump administration's "Operation Warp Speed." And two weeks before Mr. Trump's second inauguration, Bourla and other Pfizer executives traveled to Mar-A-Lago for meetings, the Financial Times has previously reported. CBS News has reached out to Pfizer and the White House for comment.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A law school graduate collapsed while taking the bar exam in a New York City suburb this week, prompting an emergency response as other aspiring lawyers worked on their exams. But some Reddit users claiming they were among the test-takers Wednesday say they're upset the exam wasn't halted outright. Hofstra University spokesperson Terry Coniglio said Friday that the test-taker collapsed shortly before a scheduled lunch break at the Long Island campus. Hofstra Public Safety officers immediately provided life saving emergency care, including CPR and defibrillation, until paramedics arrived and transported them to a local hospital, she said. The New York State Board of Law Examiners, which administers the exam, said the medical emergency occurred 'only a few minutes' before the end of the exam's morning session and staff promptly contacted emergency responders. 'The exam concluded as our staff was obtaining medical aid for the candidate,' the Friday statement said. 'As soon as the exam ended the proctors collected the exams and the candidates were dismissed from the room so that EMTs could provide the needed medical care to the candidate.' The university and the state board wished the law candidate, who has not been named, a speedy recovery. The board said it is also continuing to review what happened, including which candidates may have been impacted, and 'will formulate an appropriate response in due course.'

On July 31, the 'Can't Stop the Feeling' singer shared that he has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, admitting that his world tour was made difficult by his ongoing health issues. 'I don't say [this] so you feel bad for me but to shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes,' the 44-year-old shared in a vulnerable Instagram post. 'If you've experienced this disease or know someone who has—then you're aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.' And while the *NSYNC alum—who shares kids Silas, 10, and Phineas, 4, with wife Jessica Biel—said he was initially 'shocked' by the diagnosis, it ended up making a lot of sense. 'At least I could understand why I would be onstage,' Timberlake explained, 'and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.' Initially, Lyme causes a rash, fever, chills and headaches. However, if left untreated, the disease can sometimes evolve into chronic Lyme disease, which can cause fatigue, body aches, or difficulty thinking. Other later stage symptoms include facial droopiness, joint pain, nerve pain, dizziness or shortness of breath. While the symptoms vary, many celebrities have shared that they are debilitating. In the end, a neurologist finally connected that it was the nerve to each vocal cord.' However, doctors are able to determine if a patient has Lyme disease through blood tests several weeks after an infection has started by searching for Lyme antibodies. How do you treat Lyme disease? Initial Lyme disease infections can be treated by antibiotics. After Lyme disease becomes chronic, flare ups can arise from stress or pushing your body too hard, according to Global Lyme Alliance, which recommends monitoring symptoms daily to adjust behavior based on how you feel to keep symptoms at bay. Meanwhile, Bella Hadid admitted that she had '15 years of invisible suffering' amid her battle with chronic Lyme disease. 'Living in this state, worsening with time and work while trying to make myself, my family and the people who support me, proud, had taken a toll on me in ways I can't really explain,' the model wrote in a 2023 Instagram post. 'The universe works in the most painful and beautiful ways but I need to say that if you are struggling—it will get better.' Alec Baldwin, for his part, described it as one of the scariest periods of his life. 'I really thought this is it, I'm not going to live,' he shared at LymeAid, the Bay Area Lyme Foundation's gala, in 2017. 'I was lying in bed saying, 'I'm going to die of Lyme disease' in my bed and 'I hope someone finds me and I'm not here for too long.''
