'If are not on Android already...': Google has a message for iPhone users
At The
Android
Show,
unveiled its
Advanced Protection
security suite, designed specifically for Android 16. Building on its existing security infrastructure, this new suite introduces enhanced safeguards against sophisticated cyber threats. It also includes specialized features tailored for high-risk users—such as journalists, elected officials, and public figures—offering them stronger protection. During the announcement, Google didn't miss the chance to throw a little shade at iPhone users, encouraging them to 'embrace Android' for better security.
"This is just one of many Android security features we're investing in, like theft protection, real-time malware scanning, and platform-level fraud detection to help keep you safe," said Stella Loh, senior product manager of Android Platform, while
"And that's why Android smartphones scored highest for built-in security features and anti-fraud efficacy in a recent study," she added, saying, "So if any of you aren't on Android already, think about switching to the platform that helps shut down scammers."
What security features are coming to Android 16
Android Security Group Product Manager Il-Sung Lee announced that the Advanced Protection programme introduces a central security setting. This setting allows users to enable and secure Android's top-tier security functionalities. Lee stated that the feature provides "Google's strongest security for mobile devices" for both at-risk individuals and those who prioritise security.
A notable new capability is Intrusion Logging, described as an "industry-first." This feature securely and privately backs up device logs in a way that prevents tampering. This supports users in performing forensic analysis if they suspect their device has been compromised.
The system utilises a multi-layered security approach, referred to as "defense-in-depth." This strategy ensures that multiple security layers work together, helping to prevent security features within Advanced Protection from being disabled accidentally or maliciously.
Advanced Protection serves as a unified control point, managing important security configurations across various Google applications, including Chrome, Google Messages, and Phone by Google. Google also indicated plans to include third-party applications in the future, provided they integrate with the system. Lee explained that the suite functions as "a single control point that enables important security settings across many of your favorite Google apps."
The Advanced Protection feature will be accessible on devices running the Android 16 operating system.

Apple might split release of iPhone 18 series between 2026 and 2027: Report
Apple is reportedly planning to stagger the release of iPhone 18 series between 2026 and 2027. According to a South Korean technology-focused news organisation ET News, Apple is likely to split the release of iPhone 18 series models between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027 to accommodate the inclusion of its first foldable iPhone. Apple iPhone 18 series: What to expect According to ET News, the US consumer electronics maker is planning to release the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max models in the second half of 2027, alongside its first-ever foldable iPhone. Notably, this leaves out the iPhone 18 base model and the iPhone 18e model, which will likely be released in the first half of 2027. This year, Apple launched the iPhone 16e in February. Soon after, there were reports that the successor bearing the 'e' moniker will launch either with rest of the models in the iPhone 17 series, or may follow the suit for standalone release. Now, it appears that Apple is shifting gears and moving away from its launch cycle practice. With this new strategy in place, Apple might be aiming to make up for the dip of 2 per cent in shipments of its iPhones in the second quarter of 2025, reported CNET. iPhone 17 and 18 series: Expected launch timeline September 2025: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Air First half of 2026: iPhone 17e September 2026: Foldable iPhone, iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max First half of 2027: iPhone 18 base model and iPhone 18e Notably, Apple has not yet made any official confirmation in this regard hence, readers are advised to take this information with a pinch of salt. Apple's first foldable iPhone: What to expect A report from CNBC suggests that Apple's first foldable iPhone might sport a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.5-inch outer display. In comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a slightly larger 8-inch internal panel and a 6.5-inch cover screen. The Apple device may measure around 9mm to 9.5mm when folded and between 4.5mm and 4.8mm when unfolded, making it a bit bulkier than Samsung's Fold 7, which is 8.9mm folded and 4.2mm unfolded. One of the key highlights could be a foldable screen without a visible crease — a feature that the iPhone maker is reportedly prioritising. Samsung, however, is also said to be developing a similar technology for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which might arrive in 2026. For cameras, the foldable iPhone is expected to feature a dual-lens setup on the back, along with dedicated selfie cameras on both the cover screen and the main display.

US spy chief Tulsi Gabbard says UK agreed to drop 'backdoor' mandate for Apple
U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said on Monday the UK had agreed to drop its mandate for iPhone maker Apple to provide a "back door" that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens. Gabbard issued the statement on X, saying she had worked for months with Britain to arrive at a deal.(Bloomberg File Photo) Gabbard issued the statement on X, saying she had worked for months with Britain, along with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to arrive at a deal. U.S. lawmakers said in May that the UK's order to Apple to create a backdoor to its encrypted user data could be exploited by cybercriminals and authoritarian governments. Apple, which has said it would never build a so-called back door into its encrypted services or devices, had challenged the order at the UK's Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT). The iPhone maker withdrew its Advanced Data Protection feature for UK users in February following the UK order. Users of Apple's iPhones, Macs and other devices can enable the feature to ensure that only they — and not even Apple — can unlock data stored on its cloud.

Apple to produce all new iPhone 17 models in India for first time: Report
Apple is reportedly set to produce all four models of the iPhone 17 in India, ahead of the expected launch of the flagship smartphone in India. In a boost to India's domestic manufacturing, the tech giant is also expanding iPhone 17 production across five factories, some of which are recently opened facilities, according to a report by Bloomberg. Tata Group's plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and Foxconn's production facility close to the Bengaluru airport, both of which recently became operational, will join existing units in producing the iPhone 17, as per the report. This is the first time that Apple will produce and ship all new variations of an iPhone from India from the outset. The move comes as Apple looks to navigate the Trump administration's constantly shifting tariffs landscape by shifting the vast majority of the smartphone's production for the US market to India from China. Tata's new plant joining iPhone 17 production also points to the conglomerate's potential role as a key partner of Apple. Tata Group is currently the only Indian company assembling iPhone 17s in the country, as Taiwan-based Foxconn has so far been Apple's leading contractor here. In 2023, Tata bought Wistron Corp's Apple production plant located in Karnataka. It also owns a controlling stake in Pegatron's plant just outside of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Tata-owned facilities are expected to contribute up to half of India's iPhone output over the next two years, as per the report. The value of iPhone exports from India has grown substantially. The Indian Express had earlier reported that India's share in US smartphone imports surged to nearly 36 per cent in the first five months of 2025, from about 11 per cent in 2024. China, which continues to dominate the product category, saw its share drop from 82 per cent to 49 per cent over the same period. In April, US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries, including India. Days later, the US exempted phones, computers and other electronic products from the reciprocal tariffs. More recently, Trump slapped 50 per cent tariffs on India partly as a response to India's purchases of Russian oil. However, Apple's iPhones have so far emerged unscathed under exemptions. Earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced a fresh commitment to invest $100 billion in the United States, with a particular focus on deepening its manufacturing base in the country.
