Real-life X-Men here in five years, says man paying to make it happen

A millionaire businessman is ploughing thousands of pounds into research he claims could help build a new mutant AI-enhanced race - that he predicts will walk among us in five years. Herbert Sim has been funding work through his tech start-up Neurochip.com exploring how AI technology can 'upgrade' humanity - potentially defeating disease and living longer than ever.
The research, which was originally launched alongside Prof Dmitry Mikhaylov, former National University of Singapore professor, involves a helmet 'reading' brainwaves and projecting them onto a computer. This in turn 'reads' and converts it into actions, with Herbert claiming the research proves there's no need for invasive surgery to implant computer chips into human brains.
The 38-year-old self-professed 'futurist' believes they will soon become a reality. Through this process, Herbert claims humans will be able to develop 'superpowers' through genetic and robotic modifications and help people live longer and battle disease.
Herbert, whose company is based in London, said: "Transhumanism is about transcending humanity through technology and science. Humanity has now reached a point where we are at a crossroads and we're trying to accept technology into our lives to enhance our lifestyles.
"Transhumanism can help to extend your life for 500 years and then it's amazing to think what we can achieve. People at the moment are saying it [mutants and animal-hybrids] are fantasy but there may be some truth to it.
"There is a reason every culture across the world all draws the same pictures of dragons and mythological creatures. Because of these very dominant [new] races, they will be better than humans in every single way. The humans that are left over, they will not be able to contribute to society as effectively as these transhumans, and this is when humanity will then become obsolete."
In the American superhero series X-Men, a mutant is a human being that possesses a genetic trait called the X-gene that develop into superhuman powers at puberty. Herbert claims the creation of animal-human hybrids or 'mutants' has already begun in Japan and are currently undergoing testing after the government approved controversial stem cell research in 2019.
Herbert, who made his fortune from bitcoin but also owns Transhumanism.com, said: "I think human hybrids will be coming into our world in the next five years. "In Japan they have already started animal-human hybrids and the government has approved these and they are already testing.
"All of this technology is here to help humans transcend and live longer. These are possible superpowers that humans can have through the use of genetic technology."
Alongside X-Men, Herbert says other Hollywood movies like Terminator and Bionic Woman show how transhumanism could develop. Herbert, who studied at Oklahoma City University in the US and the University of Wolverhampton in the UK, said: "All the Hollywood movies like Terminator and The Bionic Woman all stem from transhumanism and the world is moving towards transcending humanity.
"Technology is scary because whatever we as humans don't understand we think is magic. If you go back in time before mobile phones and explained the concept of them they would have thought it was crazy and magic.
"But we're the same way right now, this futuristic technology like robots is still very farfetched in people's minds as they don't think it's possible but the technology is already there. Now it is all about educating the public so we can live alongside this technology.
"At the moment, lots of people have only seen this technology in films and see it as a downfall but I believe it's our redemption. The way I see it is that technology and science are here to empower humans the same way medicines and phones are here to make our lives better."

Netflix users slam new update

Published: | Updated: Netflix users around the world are lashing out over a new update that many say has ruined their viewing experience. The streaming giant, which boasts over 300 million subscribers , has rolled out a redesigned user interface (UI) to deliver better recommendations and a more personalized experience. However, the update has triggered a wave of frustration, with some subscribers calling it 'diabolical.' 'Netflix has destroyed the app. Worst UI redesign ever. Everyone needs to cancel,' one user posted on X. Users are now presented with enlarged title cards, the rectangular graphics that preview shows and movies, which they said takes up more screen space and reduces the number of titles visible at once. Previously, users could scroll through multiple rows of compact tiles. The 'clunky' title boxes have also taken the place of key features that users said helped them find movies and shows easily. 'Netflix's update is diabolical. Where the hell is the 'Coming Soon' section?!' another frustrated user shared on X. Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone emphasized the company's focus on merging technology with entertainment, calling it Netflix's 'superpower' that improves user connection with shows and movies. The streaming giant believes the new experience will save users from overwhelming situations, like choosing what to watch, by providing tailor-made suggestions for them. In the previous version, shortcuts like Search and My List were located on the left side. Now, shortcuts to Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix are located at the top of your screen and always visible. The revamped homepage introduces multiple rows of content that update based on a user's viewing habits. For instance, someone watching a romantic comedy may suddenly see an entire section dedicated to similar films. 'The new Netflix TV experience is still the one you know and love, just better,' Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim said. Despite the company's promises, many users are taking to social media to complain that the update has worsened their viewing experience. 'Whoever's job it was to update Netflix UI, I'm praying for a resignation in the coming weeks. IT LOOKS TERRIBLE,' an X user shared. On Reddit, where user experience discussions often gain traction, subscribers echoed the frustration. One described the update as 'so dire' they were considering canceling their subscription. Another added: 'It was so slick and easy to use before. Now it's so clunky.' Some subscribers have even launched a petition urging Netflix to revert the layout, arguing that the new interface shows only three to four titles per screen, which is a drastic drop from the 20 or more shown previously. While users are outraged, Netflix stands by the design that it said will better accommodate its growing library of movies, TV shows and games. The platform also plans to add generative AI-powered search features, beginning with a beta rollout on iOS. The new AI-powered search tool will let users find content using natural language — for example, typing 'I want something funny and upbeat' instead of searching for specific titles. Despite the backlash, Netflix appears committed to the redesign. The company said internal testing showed strong user engagement, suggesting confidence that the interface will grow on subscribers over time. Interestingly, signs of user discontent surfaced months ago. Some began voicing complaints during early beta testing, particularly over the enlarged tiles and the diminished ease of browsing, concerns that have since exploded across social platforms.

More info Film buffs are completely "gripped" by the apocalyptic vision of New York City crumbling under climate change in the disaster flick led by Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal. The Day After Tomorrow dials up the thrill factor by merging climate science with high-stakes drama, leaving audiences captivated. The crowning glory of the film lies in its striking special effects which have not only set it apart from its peers but also clinched a BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. Echoing sentiments of approval, a review on Rotten Tomatoes reads: "The Day After Tomorrow plays with the idea of global warming and flips it to global cooling. "The visuals and CGI are outstanding. The whole tsunami sequence and then subsequent freezing scenes are just spectacular to watch even today." They add: "The acting is a little shoddy, with decent performances from Dennis Quaid and Sela Ward. Otherwise, the film is really just a special effects extravaganza geared towards making a statement against global warming." Central to its tale is Jack Hall, portrayed by Dennis Quaid, an American paleoclimatologist who stumbles upon a colossal ice sheet breakage, setting off a catastrophic climatic upheaval. Now he must embark on a perilous trek back to New York City to find his son as the planet faces an abrupt descent into a frigid new world, reports the Express. In the bustling metropolis, Sam, alongside his friends, gets ready for an academic decathlon. However, strong superstorms and torrential rain have left Manhattan submerged, with residents wading through deep waters, immobilised by the flood. With the president urged by Hall to evacuate people further south in response to the icy conditions, he embarks on a treacherous journey to rescue Sam. The peril escalates, leaving audiences in suspense over their survival amidst these harsh elements. The encapsulating review states: "Unique and gripping! I hadn't seen a film similar to this before, so I thought this was great to watch. Great acting and very good effects. Will watch this again and again." Although The Day After Tomorrow has garnered acclaim for its visual effects wizardry, its story has not escaped criticism. A modest 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes reflects mixed feelings about the acting and script. An audience member expressed: "People who are looking for a great story and characters, this movie is not for you. But, if you like intense sequences that leave you on the edge of your seat, you will love this movie." Meanwhile, a viewer remarked: "Worth a watch during a snow day. There are several holes in the plot, but it's intense and entertaining!" For those intrigued by cinematic portrayals of global catastrophe, The Day After Tomorrow is available for streaming on Disney+.

Participants who consumed one avocado daily for six months reported better sleep compared to those who ate fewer than two avocados per month. The researchers also looked at the effect this had on cardiovascular health, as previous studies have shown insufficient or disrupted sleep can increase the risk of 'silent killer' condition heart disease. In the study, 969 American adults took part, and all had elevated waist circumstance - a cardiovascular risk factor. Participants were picked at random to either consume one avocado a day or less than two avocados per month, while continuing their usual diet for six months. Their cardiovascular health was then assessed using the AHA's Life Essential 8 tool, which identifies diet quality, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep, body weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose as leading behaviours and factors that when improved can lead to better health outcomes. Daily avocado intake was linked to improved diet quality, blood lipids, and sleep health. But no other significant effects were found for the other Life's Essential 8 components. The study wasn't originally designed to examine sleep as a primary outcome, but bridges the gap for further research into how the nutrients in avocados may support aspects of cardiovascular health. Avocados contain a number of nutrients that play a role in sleep. Five best stretches to improve sleep They're a good source of tryptophan, an essential amino acid that plays a role in serotonin production, which can impact mood and sleep. They also contain folate, which is involved in melatonin production, and magnesium, which aids in muscle relaxation, further supporting sleep regulation. And their magnesium content can support muscle relaxation and stabilise blood sugar levels. Additionally, the combination of fibre and monounsaturated fats in avocados contributes to their beneficial impact on cardiovascular health. Fibre can help reduce cholesterol levels and improve blood sugar control, both important factors in heart health. And monounsaturated fats, a type of healthy fat, can help lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. 2 Sleep is considered as important as exercise and nutrition Credit: Getty If you're struggling to sleep or think you have a sleep disorder like insomnia, the NHS recommends trying the following tips: go to bed and wake up at the same time every day relax at least one hour before bed, for example, take a bath or read a book make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet – use curtains, blinds, an eye mask or ear plugs if needed exercise regularly during the day make sure your mattress, pillows and covers are comfortable You should avoid: smoking or drinking alcohol, tea or coffee at least six hours before going to bed eating a big meal late at night exercising at least four hours before bed watching television or use devices, like smartphones, right before going to bed, because the blue light makes you more awake napping during the day driving when you feel sleepy sleeping in after a bad night's sleep and stick to your regular sleeping hours instead If you've had trouble sleeping for months, speak to your GP. Avocados can be bought for as little as 75p from Sainsbury's.
