'Tsunami of suicides': 'Israeli' parliament warns of rising suicide trend among soldiers

Roya News05-08-2025
An 'Israeli' parliament subcommittee convened today to address a sharp rise in suicides within the military, particularly among reservists since the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
The meeting, led by MK Elazar Stern, highlighted demands from bereaved families for better psychological support and recognition for the soldiers, warning of an impending "tsunami" of mental health crises.
A grieving family member shared a story of her brother, Assaf Dagan, who committed suicide. According to his sister, Neta, Dagan had repeatedly sought help, and his mother had warned a senior commander that he might take his life.
The military presented new data on the issue. So far in 2025, there have been 16 recorded suicides, following 21 in 2024, 17 in 2023, and 14 in 2022.
The increase is most pronounced among reserve service members due to extensive mobilization since the war began.

Netanyahu compares Gaza strikes to WWII Dresden bombing

On Wednesday, 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed attendees at a Newsmax event in Jerusalem. During, he suggested that while overthrowing Iran's government was never an official aim of the ongoing war, it could emerge as one of its consequences. Reflecting on the events of October 7, 2023, Netanyahu admitted there had been 'clear failures and intelligence mistakes,' marking a rare acknowledgment of shortcomings in 'Israel's' security apparatus. One of his remarks drew sharp international and humanitarian criticism when he likened 'Israel's' military actions in Gaza to the Allied bombing of Dresden, Germany, during World War II, a campaign notorious for its devastation of civilian areas. 'We can bomb Gaza just like the Allies bombed the city of Dresden in Germany during World War II,' he said. Critics argue the statement underscores the scale of destruction being inflicted on the besieged enclave. The attack on Dresden killed an estimated 25,000 civilians and left the city, then famed for its baroque architecture and cultural heritage, in ruins. Historians and ethicists have long debated its military necessity, given that Nazi Germany was already nearing defeat. Critics have labeled it an act of indiscriminate destruction aimed at civilian morale, while supporters at the time argued it was intended to cripple German transport and communication.

Palestinian Authority condemns Netanyahu's 'Greater Israel' vision

The Palestinian Presidency has condemned 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statements regarding his so-called "Greater Israel" vision. In a statement, the presidency said the comments are "rejected, condemned, and constitute a dangerous provocation and escalation." It added that the remarks reflect the "colonial expansionist policy" governing 'Israel' and its refusal to respect the sovereignty of nations and international agreements. Yesterday, In an interview with 'Israeli' broadcaster i24NEWS, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated he is on a "historic and spiritual mission" for the Jewish people and feels a strong connection to the "vision of Greater Israel". The interview, conducted on Tuesday, occurred as his government was preparing to expand its military operations into the remaining parts of Gaza. During the exchange, interviewer Sharon Gal, a former right-wing member of Knesset, presented Netanyahu with an amulet showing "Greater Israel". When asked if he felt a connection to the vision, Netanyahu replied, "Very much," and described his mission as one of generations. The concept of "Greater Israel" (Eretz Yisrael HaShlema) refers to the historic or desired borders of 'Israel'. While biblical definitions vary, the term is now commonly used by 'Israelis' to refer to the territory of the 'Israel' along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This ideology has been a foundational tenet of Netanyahu's Likud party, which traces its roots to Revisionist Zionism and its founder, Ze'ev Jabotinsky. Netanyahu has consistently opposed the creation of a Palestinian state, a stance he has reiterated publicly. Critics argue that his government's settlement expansion policy is the physical embodiment of the "Greater Israel" vision, creating "facts on the ground" that make a viable Palestinian state impossible.

'Bury Palestine': Smotrich says will approve massive settlement tender in West Bank

'Israeli' Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced he plans to approve tenders for 3,401 new housing units in the E1 settlement area of the occupied West Bank, declaring the move is intended to "bury the idea of a Palestinian state". The announcement marks a significant and long-sought advance for a project that has been frozen for decades due to intense international opposition. Many long viewed the E1 plan as a "doomsday" scenario for the two-state solution, as its implementation would geographically bisect the West Bank and isolate East Jerusalem, making a contiguous Palestinian state unviable. Smotrich also holds a ministerial role in the Defense Ministry with responsibility over West Bank civilian affairs. In a public statement, he described the approval of construction plans as a continuation of the government's "de facto sovereignty plan" and a definitive step to establish facts on the ground. 'This is Zionism at its best – building, settling and strengthening our sovereignty in the Land of Israel,' Smotrich adds. He has previously stated that his "life's mission is to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state". The E1 area is a strategic, 12-square-kilometer strip of land situated between East Jerusalem and the large 'Israeli' settlement of Ma'ale Adumim. The development of this corridor would effectively cut the West Bank in two, preventing a cohesive link between its northern and southern regions, such as Ramallah and Bethlehem. The plan would also complete a ring of settlements around East Jerusalem, further isolating it from the rest of the West Bank and crippling the Palestinian economy, which is heavily reliant on the city. According to the 'Israeli' settlement watchdog Peace Now, the approved tenders would constitute an enormous 33% increase in Ma'ale Adumim's housing stock, a settlement whose population has been stagnant for a decade. The E1 project has a long history of being advanced and then stalled, primarily under pressure from the United States and other international actors. Recent attempts to move forward with the plan in 2022 and 2023 were postponed due to American pressure. This latest move comes amidst a broader and accelerating policy of settlement expansion and administrative changes in the West Bank. In 2023, the number of housing units advanced in the West Bank was the highest since the signing of the Oslo Accords. This trend continued in 2024 with a record number of new outposts being established.
