Goalie Jakub Dobes signs two-year deal with Canadiens after successful rookie season

BROSSARD - Goaltender Jakub Dobes has signed a two-year, one-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens. The deal will pay the backup goalie an average of US$965,000 per season. Dobes played in 16 Canadiens games this past season, earning a 7-4-3 record with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. The six-foot-four, 215-pound netminder ranked fourth in wins among NHL rookie goaltenders and was one of five first-year goaltenders to earn a shutout. Dobes, who started the 2024-25 season with the Laval Rocket, recorded a shutout in his first career NHL game against the Florida Panthers in late December. The native of Ostrava, Czechia, also played three post-season contests and earned his first career playoff win in late April against the Washington Capitals. Kayla Thornton becomes first-ever Golden State Valkyries player named to All-Star roster

The Golden State Valkyries now have their first-ever WNBA All-Star representative in forward Kayla Thornton. On Sunday, the WNBA announced Thornton was chosen by coaches for the 2025 All-Star roster as a reserve. She joins 11 other players, such as Los Angeles Sparks' Kelsey Plum, Chicago Sky's Angel Reese, the Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas, and Seattle Storm's Skylar Diggins. It's Thornton's first All-Star selection and adds to what has been a stellar year. Fresh off a Championship run with the New York Liberty, she became part of the Valkyries' inaugural roster and currently leads the team in points per game, 14.9, and in rebounds per game, 7.1. She was named Western Conference Player of the Week in June, averaging 20 points, 11.5 rebounds, and an assist that week. She recently scored a career-high 29 points, has five double-doubles for the season, three other games with over 20 points, and is 10th in steals league-wide. The 2025 All-Star selection also makes her the second-most veteran player ever chosen, the WNBA said. Thornton is in her 10th season, having previously played for the Dallas Wings and the Liberty. All-Star captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will choose their teams from the remaining starters and the reserves roster on Tuesday. Thornton and the Valkyries will play again on Monday against the Atlanta Dream. The game will be on local TV KPIX 5.

Daniel Suarez felt unheard, with "no chemistry" at Trackhouse Racing

After five years at Trackhouse, Daniel Suarez will exit the team at the end of the 2025 season. And on Saturday during media bullpen interviews, he opened up on the situation behind the scenes. 'For me, it was a lot of relief for me (to have it be official) because I have known for several months that this was going to happen," Suarez told the assembled media. 'It's just like everything in life ... things change, people change, companies change and that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. There just wasn't really love anymore. There are no hard feelings at all. I really want to stick to the amazing years that we had together early with Trackhouse, and it was just time for a change.' As he has in previous interviews, Suarez praised his No. 99 team, focusing instead on organizational differences as a reason for the two parties drifting apart. 'There have been several situations in the last eight months, 10 months, that I just haven't felt like I used to," revealed Suarez. "Sometimes when you don't have that feel, there is just no chemistry anymore. It's like being in a relationship but just living together because you bought a house together. It just didn't feel good anymore. I'm pretty sure it was both ways." Advertisement Suarez also said that he has spoken out about certain changes that need to be made in order for the team to improve, but felt his voice wasn't be heard. 'I've been very vocal that we need to adjust this, we need to adjust that and I'm not the only one seeing it -- more people are seeing it," said Suarez. "Not a lot of things happen, everything happens so slowly. I don't think that's the only reason. I think there are more things, but lately there have been things that made me feel that I'm not as important.' Suarez currently sits 29th in the championship standings and is winless in 2025. While he is ahead of rookie teammate Shane van Gisbergen in points, but SVG and Ross Chastain -- who is in the top ten in points -- have both won races this year.
