‘Terrible headache' leads to big lottery win for lucky Maryland player

Miami Herald16-04-2025

A Maryland lottery player went from an unfortunate situation to a very lucky moment when she picked up a winning ticket.
The Anne Arundel County woman won a $200,000 top prize from a Ravens X10 scratch-off ticket she bought for $10 in November, the Maryland Lottery said in an April 16 news release.
'I had a terrible headache,' the woman told lottery officials. 'I went to the store to get some medicine and stopped for gas on the way home. While I was there, I picked up a ticket.'
She scanned her ticket right then and there at the store. When a message she didn't recognize popped up, she left thinking there was a problem, according to lottery officials.
However, back at home, the woman scanned her ticket again using the lottery app and learned she'd won the game's top prize, the lottery said.
'I was shocked!' the woman told lottery officials.
She said she told her family she had something special to share but forgot to actually tell them for months.
'My sister asked, 'what was that news you wanted to share?' That's when it hit me — I never cashed in my ticket,' she said.
The lottery winner said she hopes to donate some of the money to church or charity, or give to her family and save some of it.
'I really hope to do good with it,' she told lottery officials.
She bought her ticket at a gas station in Odenton, about at 20-mile drive southwest from Baltimore, according to lottery officials.
The odds of winning the top prize in the Ravens X10 game are 1 in 3.28, according to the lottery.
The game started in August and has four remaining top prize tickets, lottery officials said.

Recent college graduate buys lottery ticket — and can pay off her student loans

A recent college graduate will be entering the workforce student loan free — thanks to a Maryland lottery ticket purchase. The Rosedale woman was celebrating with friends at Dick's Famous Halfway Inn tavern when she bought a $5 Mosaic Money scratch-off ticket, Maryland Lottery officials said in a June 9 news release. She handed her ticket to a friend, 'who had never played scratch-offs,' lottery officials said. As the friend helped scratch the ticket, they noticed it had five numbers that matched the ticket's winning numbers, lottery officials said. Each number included a $5,000 prize, totaling $25,000, according to lottery officials. There was more to her ticket, however: 'The ticket also had a 2X symbol with a $5,000 prize, doubling it to $10,000; and a 3X symbol with another $5,000 amount, tripling it to $15,000,' bringing the total to $50,000, lottery officials said. 'My friend didn't think it was real,' the winner, who wasn't identified publicly, told lottery officials. To confirm the win, the friend group scanned the ticket, and, sure enough, the woman scored the game's top prize of $50,000, lottery officials said. 'I almost cried when I saw the amount,' she said. The recent graduate told lottery officials she plans to use her winnings to pay off her student loans. Rosedale is about a 10-mile drive northeast from Baltimore.

Longtime lottery player buys 2 tickets in Maryland. They were both big winners

A longtime lottery player bought two tickets that turned out to be winners in Maryland, officials said. The winner, who's been playing the lottery for the last 15 years and crosses the state to rack up wins, bought two Bonus Match 5 tickets at a 7-Eleven in Waldorf, according to a June 5 news release by the Maryland Lottery. He had no idea the May 30 drawing would reveal that each ticket was holding a $50,000 prize, officials said. The man scanned the ticket at the store and saw it was a winner but stayed calm before heading home to share the news with his wife, officials said. 'I kept my cool and left the store right away,' he told lottery officials. When asked what he plans to do with the winnings, the lucky man said 'I'll get ahead on some bills, and the rest I'll save for a rainy day,' according to the release. Waldorf is about a 60-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Lottery player wins big — and plans to hit the mall. ‘I'm refreshing my wardrobe'

A lucky lottery player already has plans for some of the $50,000 he won playing Bonus Match 5 in Maryland. The Baltimore man, who works as a program counselor, has a shopping spree in his future, according to a June 4 news release from the Maryland Lottery. He told lottery officials that, 'I like clothes and I'm refreshing my wardrobe.' The man bought the Bonus Match 5 tickets at a food mart in Baltimore, lottery officials said. He scanned his tickets at a gas station later on, 'and the one said to 'Take to the Lottery,'' the man said, per lottery officials. He looked for guidance from the cashier, who 'told him he won big,' lottery officials said. The man, 'in disbelief,' kept running errands, but he did make one immediate purchase: getting his car detailed. 'I just wanted my car right and I got the works,' he told lottery officials. 'I didn't care how much it cost.' Along with the mall trip, the man may buy his wife a new car with the windfall, and he plans to save, lottery officials said.
