Metro stations from DumDum-Kavi Subhas undergo security audit by RITES

News182 days ago
Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) A security audit of DumDum-Kavi Subhas stretch of the Kolkata Metro Railway Blue Line covering 22 stations, including underground ones, have been conducted by RITES, a senior official said on Tuesday.
On July 28, the Kavi Subhas metro station of the blue line was shut down after cracks appeared on the structure. It was then announced that the up platform of the 15-year-old metro station at New Garia in the southern fringes of the city will be razed and rebuilt, leading to closure of the station and termination of up and down train services at Sahid Khudiram.
The audit – factoring the structural conditions of stations built along both the elevated and underground parts of India's first metro and the condition of tunnels – has been submitted to the Ministry of Railways for evaluation and necessary follow-up action, the official told PTI.
However, nothing has been found to press the panic button immediately, and the stations and tunnels were found to be structurally safe and sound.
The report focused on the structural conditions of the 17 underground stations between Dumdum and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, which is about 16.45 km long and the condition of the tunnel, as well as the pillars built on the Adi Ganga canal between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar-Kavi Subhas elevated stretch and the foundation of six stations along that stretch, the official said.
'The RITES had undertaken a survey and submitted the report early this year as part of the continuous maintenance drill," he said.
'The pillars have been found to be structurally safe and sound, but in case there is a need for any modification or adjustment for public safety, that decision will be taken by the Railway Board," he said.
The Dumdum-Tollygunge underground part became functional in 1995, while the stations along the elevated tracks between Netaji and Kavi Subhas were opened between 2009-2010.
With instances of water seepage and flooding of tracks in parts of the underground section of the blue line following heavy downpour in recent times, monitoring the condition of tunnels has assumed more importance, but Metro is maintaining every caution to assess the structural aspect of its stations, the official added.
However, before cracks were spotted in its four pillars, the authorities had chalked out plans for partial razing down and restoration of Kavi Subhas station after the Durga Puja, as RITES had flagged some issues over its foundation.
'All stations on the Sahid Khudiram-Dakshineswar section have been found to be in overall good condition," he said.
The 32-km Blue Line is at present operational between Shahid Khudiram station and Dakshineswar station. PTI SUS RG

City mobility plan report red flags traffic, pedestrian safety

1 2 Nagpur: On nearly half the roads in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region (NMR), pedestrians have no space to walk, and on most, local traffic has no side lanes to move into, reveals the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for NMR, prepared by MahaMetro and RITES. The draft mentions that 80% of roads lack service lanes, while 46% have no footpaths, exposing critical gaps in the city's pedestrian infrastructure. The data, drawn from primary road surveys under the CMP, shows only 42.2% (271.5km) of roads in the region have footpaths on both sides, while another 11.7% (75.2km) have them on just one side. Where footpaths exist, they are often encroached upon, poorly maintained, or interrupted. In several commercial stretches, they have been taken over by shop extensions, parked vehicles, or utility structures, which have been repeatedly reported by TOI in recent years. The lack of service roads, designed to handle local and slow-moving traffic, compounds the problem. The main carriageways are forced to accommodate all types of vehicles, from through-traffic to autos and two-wheelers halting for pickups, leading to frequent bottlenecks and unsafe manoeuvres. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Will Happen to Your Body If You Start Eating 3 Eggs Every Day? Undo This is particularly evident along roads flanked by dense residential and market areas. Out of 643.6 km of arterial and major roads surveyed, only 129.8 km (20.2%) have service lanes. The remaining 513.8 km (79.8%) are without them. The CMP also assesses the right of way (ROW) across the surveyed network. It finds that 13.6% (87.3km) of roads have a ROW of 10m or less, limiting the possibility of expanding lanes or adding footpaths and medians. Another 20.1% (129.5km) fall in the 11–20m range, while the largest share, with 37% (238.5km), lies between 20–30m. About 29.3% (188.3 km) have a ROW above 30 metres, offering some scope for future infrastructure additions. In terms of carriageway width, data shows 21.8% of roads are either intermediate or two-lane (up to 9m), while 44.3% (285.2 km) are four-lane, and 28.4% (183km) are six-lane or wider. This variation impacts traffic flow and capacity, especially where narrow roads coincide with high-density zones lacking service lanes or footpaths. Though Nagpur is expanding its mass transit systems, including metro and bus networks, the CMP warns that these efforts may be undercut by persistent deficiencies in core road infrastructure. Without retrofitting roads with dedicated pedestrian spaces and service lanes, broader mobility goals may remain unfulfilled. The draft CMP is currently under review and will serve as a key reference for future planning, policymaking, and investment in urban transport for the region. CO2 emissions to rise 28% by 2054 in Nagpur: Report

1 2 Nagpur: Nagpur's daily carbon dioxide emissions are projected to rise by nearly 28% in the next three decades, warns the draft comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) prepared by RITES and MahaMetro. The projected rise in emissions is attributed to a surge in private vehicles and declining use of public transport, walking, and non-motorised transport (NMT) in the city. Soon-to-be implemented across the city, CMP flags severe environmental consequences if integration of walkable infrastructure, public transport services, and non-motorised mobility remains neglected. The report estimates that the city's current CO2 emissions of 1,311 tonne per day could increase to 1,678 tonne per day by 2054 if present travel patterns continue. Of this, two-wheelers are expected to remain the single largest contributors, emitting over 6.5 lakh kg CO2 daily by 2054. The CMP based its findings on fuel consumption patterns and vehicle categories using 2024 as the base year. Four-wheelers, with a combination of petrol, diesel, gas, and electric usage, are projected to contribute over 5.4 lakh kg, while buses — primarily through electricity usage — would account for nearly 2 lakh kg of CO2 each day. The report also draws attention to the city's declining air quality over the past five years. Citing Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the CMP notes that Nagpur's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 100.6 in 2019, dropped to 73.2 in 2020 during the Covid lockdown phase, but steadily increased to 130.1 in 2023. The year-on-year rise in AQI is seen as a reflection of increasing pollution levels tied directly to the growing number of vehicles and the resumption of industrial activities post-pandemic. While the report does not mention that degradation is inevitable, the CMP positions itself as a strategic strategy to guide long-term planning decisions that align with the city's growth and sustainability goals. Prepared jointly by RITES and MahaMetro, the plan calls for immediate and focused efforts to reverse the trend. It recommends transitioning to a sustainable urban transport (SUT) model, which integrates clean energy mobility options, efficient public transportation systems, improved urban structure, and advanced vehicular technologies. The goal is not only to cut emissions but also to improve quality of life and ensure climate resilience.
