Cutting down on milk tea after thirty is keeping Ratchanok happy

KUALA LUMPUR: Thai shuttler Ratchanok Intanon loves milk tea but she has to cut back on her favourite drink to keep playing at the highest level in the women's singles.
The 2013 world champion Ratchanok, who turned 30 in February, has to make sacrifices to maintain her fitness as she eyes more titles in an already glittering career.
"I love Thai milk tea but I cannot drink too much now as I get older because it's very sweet," said Ratchanok.
"Now, I only take it sometimes and I ask for half sugar. I drink half a cup only. I need to sacrifice this to maintain my fitness which is not easy at my age.
"I've also changed my training schedule and have been building more muscles as I cannot be skinny like last time when I was younger.
Ratchanok struggled with injury issues last year but has fought hard to regain her fitness and form.
"I had injury problems three months ago. At that time, I wanted to win but my condition was still not very good," said Ratchanok.
"I felt down sometimes but I tried to rediscover my joy of playing badminton. I just tell myself that if I feel good, my body will be good too."
The world No. 11's hard work and sacrifice has been paying dividends and helped her overcome Canada's world No. 21 Michelle Li 24-26, 24-22, 21-12 in a 77-minute battle in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Masters at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Ratchanok kept alive her hopes of capturing the title for a third time after triumphing in the 2018 and 2019 editions.
The Thai though will face a tough task against China's world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi in the semi-finals. It was not easy for me today (yesterday) as Michelle was playing well and her mentality was also strong to win the first game," said Ratchanok.
"In the second game, she was leading quite far and I told myself to keep trying to fight back.
"Then, she made some mistakes and became nervous while I kept pushing in every rally. I am happy with the win and I just want to keep playing my best tomorrow (today).
"The most important thing is to recover physically as much as I can before the semi-finals."

Thinaah's game. Rosman replaced Hoon Thien How as the women's doubles head coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last November and has been working hard to turn the national No. 1 pair into a more consistent duo. And the work is starting to pay dividends as Pearly-Thinaah made it into their first ever World Tour Super 1000 final in the Indonesian Open. The world No. 4 pair went down fighting 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 to China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday but showed clear improvement after failing to even reach the last four in a Super 1000 tourney before this. Despite competing in their fourth straight tournament, Pearly-Thinaah managed to battle hard until the end against the formidable Chinese duo before losing by the narrowest of margins. The pair are also becoming more consistent and managed to keep up their intensity after capturing the Thailand Open title last month. Pearly-Thinaah made it into the Malaysian Masters semi-finals and Singapore Open quarter-finals before achieving the personal milestone in Indonesia. Rosman believes his charges' performance over the last four weeks has been all the more commendable as the pair have not let external issues distract them. Pearly-Thinaah face an uncertain future in BAM as their contracts expired last December and they are still yet to sign new deals. "A lot has happened over these past four weeks. Although, sometimes Pearly-Thinaah have not performed to their best but their willingness to try and adapt to tactical tweaks has brought a lot of positive changes," said Rosman. "Their communication on court has also been very good and helped them a lot especially when they have been under pressure. "We have been trying new strategies on court and while there have been plenty of positives, there is still room for improvement." Antonsen, who finished runners-up in the 2019 and 2024 editions, finally got his hands on the title by overpowering Taiwan's Chou Tien-chen 22-20, 21-14 at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. It was also sweet revenge for the world No. 3 after he was denied by world No. 7 Tien-chen in the 2019 final. Antonsen did not have it easy as he was behind 17-20 in the first game but pulled off an astonishing comeback to stun the 35-year-old. The Dane then used the momentum well to wrap up the match in an hour. Antonsen, who played through pain, was thrilled to end his wait for the crown. "First of all, I want to thank all the fans. Istora Senayan is a fantastic place to play badminton," said Antonsen. "It has changed my life for sure since I first won the Indonesian Masters title here in 2019. "It's an incredible place and I'm really grateful for another final here. "I take a lot of painkillers and my body is pretty banged up. It's tough playing men's singles. I was fighting super hard. "This is my third time playing in this tournament and I wanted to win so badly," added Antonsen. It was Antonsen's first title of the year after he finished runners-up in the Malaysian Open in January and Thailand Open last month. Istora Senayan has always been a happy hunting ground for the 28-year-old as he won the Indonesian Masters in 2019 and 2024. Meanwhile, in the women's singles, South Korea's world No. 1 An Se-young captured her second title in the tourney after brilliantly coming from behind to beat China's world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi 13-21, 21-19, 21-15 in 81 minutes. Se-young added to her crown in 2021 and created history by becoming the first women's singles player to triumph in three World Tour Super 1000 competitions in the same year. The 23-year-old also claimed the Malaysian Open and All-England titles this year.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun were hoping to repeat or better their feat last year where they finished runners-up to China's Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang but narrowly went down 18-21, 21-12, 18-21 to homesters Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Saturday. The world No. 7 pair had come out on top over world No. 8 Sabar-Moh at the same stage last year but the latter, spurred on by their passionate fans, exacted revenge this time. Despite the defeat, Wei Chong-Kai Wun believe they have plenty to be happy about, especially their fighting spirit in a hostile atmosphere. In the deciding game, the pair were 14-20 behind but refused to give up easily and nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback by grabbing four points. "It's not easy to play in Istora. Our opponents did very well too," said Wei Chong in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "During the crucial points at the end, we just gave our best as we had nothing to lose. We just wanted to enjoy our game. "For us, it's important to trust each other and keep supporting each other no matter what." Kai Wun said: "Our momentum is quite stable until now and I'm very happy for this. We hope we can keep maintaining our mentality and mindset like this. "In the men's doubles, anyone can win, so every rally counts. As long as the match is not over, we have to keep trying." Wei Chong-Kai Wun have found some consistency lately after struggling to maintain their form earlier in the year. The pair captured the Indonesian Masters title atthe same venue in January but suffered early round exits in the Orleans Masters, All-England, Asian Championships and Thailand Open. Wei Chong-Kai Wun then bounced back spectacularly to win the Malaysian Masters crown and made it into the last eight in the Singapore Open before the semi-final finish in Indonesia. The duo notably pulled off an impressive win over India's former world No. 1 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty for the first time in five meetings en route to reaching the last four. Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi is satisfied with his charges' overall showing in the tourney. "Man-Tee's performance in this tournament is quite good. For me, reaching the semi-finals in the Indonesian Open is a good achievement," said Herry. "They managed to beat the Indian pair in straight games after losing to them four times previously. "Although they lost today (Saturday) and could not make it into the final, they have gained a lot of experience playing in this tournament this time." Wei Chong-Kai Wun will next have a well-deserved break from competitions before turning their focus to the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).
