PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are feeling positive about their performance in the Indonesian Open despite seeing their run in the men's doubles end in the semi-finals.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun were hoping to repeat or better their feat last year where they finished runners-up to China's Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang but narrowly went down 18-21, 21-12, 18-21 to homesters Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Saturday.
The world No. 7 pair had come out on top over world No. 8 Sabar-Moh at the same stage last year but the latter, spurred on by their passionate fans, exacted revenge this time.
Despite the defeat, Wei Chong-Kai Wun believe they have plenty to be happy about, especially their fighting spirit in a hostile atmosphere.
In the deciding game, the pair were 14-20 behind but refused to give up easily and nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback by grabbing four points.
"It's not easy to play in Istora. Our opponents did very well too," said Wei Chong in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
"During the crucial points at the end, we just gave our best as we had nothing to lose. We just wanted to enjoy our game.
"For us, it's important to trust each other and keep supporting each other no matter what."
Kai Wun said: "Our momentum is quite stable until now and I'm very happy for this. We hope we can keep maintaining our mentality and mindset like this.
"In the men's doubles, anyone can win, so every rally counts. As long as the match is not over, we have to keep trying."
Wei Chong-Kai Wun have found some consistency lately after struggling to maintain their form earlier in the year.
The pair captured the Indonesian Masters title atthe same venue in January but suffered early round exits in the Orleans Masters, All-England, Asian Championships and Thailand Open.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun then bounced back spectacularly to win the Malaysian Masters crown and made it into the last eight in the Singapore Open before the semi-final finish in Indonesia.
The duo notably pulled off an impressive win over India's former world No. 1 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty for the first time in five meetings en route to reaching the last four.
Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi is satisfied with his charges' overall showing in the tourney.
"Man-Tee's performance in this tournament is quite good. For me, reaching the semi-finals in the Indonesian Open is a good achievement," said Herry.
"They managed to beat the Indian pair in straight games after losing to them four times previously.
"Although they lost today (Saturday) and could not make it into the final, they have gained a lot of experience playing in this tournament this time."
Wei Chong-Kai Wun will next have a well-deserved break from competitions before turning their focus to the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).

Cricket-Australia win T20 series against South Africa after Maxwell heroics

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Group B - Australia v England - Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan - February 22, 2025 Australia's Glenn Maxwell in action REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/File Photo (Reuters) -Australia's Glenn Maxwell produced an unbeaten half-century in a tense chase to help the hosts edge out South Africa by two wickets in the third and final Twenty20 International and complete a 2-1 series victory in Cairns on Saturday. Maxwell's unbeaten 62 off 36 balls helped Australia chase down a 173-run target with one ball to spare in a thrilling decider at the Cazalys Stadium. After 18 overs of their innings, it was a run-a-ball target for Australia with Maxwell in the middle. South African Corbin Bosch (3-26) claimed two wickets in the penultimate over and kept Maxwell away from the strike. Needing 10 off the last over from Lungi Ngidi, Maxwell took six from the first four balls before reverse sweeping the bowler for a four to seal Australia's dramatic victory. "It was a little bit nerve-wracking," Maxwell said after being adjudged player of the match. "I probably had to do the majority of the striking but, yeah, it was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end." Earlier, put in to bat, South Africa overcame a top order wobble to post a competitive 172-7 with Dewald Brevis (53) top-scoring for them. The tourists were 49-3 inside seven overs but Brevis looked unfazed and hit Aaron Hardie for four sixes in an over, throwing the pacer out of the attack. Brevis raced to a 22-ball fifty but Maxwell took a brilliant running catch near the rope to dismiss him off the bowling of Nathan Ellis (3-31). Tristan Stubbs contributed 25 and Rassie van der Dussen made 38 not out down the order but South Africa still fell short of the 175-mark. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54) led Australia's robust reply, dominating his 66-run opening stand with Travis Head (19). Kagiso Rabada floored a return catch from Marsh when the batter was on 26 and Aiden Markram gave a similar reprieve to Head off his own bowling. Head could not capitalise on it though and fell to Markram in the same over. Bosch bowled Josh Inglis for a first ball duck before South Africa's teenaged left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka dismissed Marsh and Cameron Green (nine) in the same over to turn the match on its head. Rabada also produced a two-wicket over, dismissing Tim David and Hardie but Maxwell stayed calm to guide Australia home. The three-match one-day international series between the sides begins in Cairns on Tuesday. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; editing by Ken Ferris)

Jan Jireh to face Eogene in all-Malaysian final in Ipoh

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent shuttler Lee Jan Jireh pulled off a major upset to set up an all-Malaysian men's singles final at the Malaysia International Challenge in Ipoh on Saturday. The world No. 354, who was dropped from the national team in October, stunned India's eighth seed Mithun Manjunath, ranked 130th, 18-16, 15-3 at the Perak Badminton Arena. Jan Jireh's triumph earned him a showdown with compatriot Eogene Ewe in Sunday's title decider. World No. 80 Eogene booked his place in the final after edging compatriot and world No. 182 Chua Kim Sheng 15-10, 11-15, 15-5. Eogene holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Jan Jireh. This will be Eogene's second final of the year, after he lifted the Slovenia Open crown in May. Malaysia will also be represented in the mixed doubles final, after Tan Zhi Yang-Nicole Tan shocked compatriots and world No. 493 Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah-Dania Sofea Zaidi 15-12, 10-15, 16-14 in a 52-minute thriller. The world No. 359 Malaysians will face Indonesia's world No. 789 Kenzie Yoe-Luna Saffana, who advanced after Low Han Chen-Vannee Gobi retired. In the men's doubles, Faiq Haziq Masawi-Lok Hong Quan prevailed in an all-Malaysian battle against Beh Chun Men-Choi Jian Sheng. World No. 118 Faiq-Hong Quan overcame world No. 212 Chun Men-Jian Sheng 15-9, 15-11. They will take on Japan's world No. 84 Keiichiro Matsui-Katsuki Tamate in the final. The Japanese pair defeated Malaysia's Nurfirdaus Azman-Shaqeem Eiman Shahyar 17-15, 15-8. However, there was disappointment in the women's doubles as Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng bowed out in the semi-finals, falling 10-15, 15-8, 15-8 to South Korea's Jeon Jui-Kim Ha Na.
