Experts from over 40 countries to attend European Maritime Day conference in Cork
The European Maritime Day conference, which kicks off today, will host experts from over 40 countries to discuss a range of topics – from maritime security to coastal tourism and marine pollution to ocean energy.
An estimated 1,000 people will descend on Cork for the three-day event, with the conference workshops taking place in City Hall and adjoining venues. A free family-friendly festival will be held along the city quays on Friday and Saturday.
People working in the maritime sector will be travelling from China, Canada, Japan, Africa, Denmark, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, France, and Germany to the event.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin is due to attend the conference, as will European Commissioner for Ocean and Fisheries, Costas Kadis, as well as Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Commissioner, Michael McGrath.
Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy, Darragh O'Brien and Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Timmy Dooley are also scheduled to take part. The conference is organised by Cork City Council, the Government and the European Commission.

Cork City Council Chief Executive, Valerie O'Sullivan said: 'It is an honour for Cork City Council and the Government of Ireland to host European Maritime Day and to see the positive impact this conference is having on the city's hospitality and tourism sector.
"The importance of the maritime sector to Cork and the national economy is significant. Up to 37% of Ireland's marine companies and 40% of our blue bio-economy and seafood industry are based in the south of the country.'
She pointed out that the Naval Service is based at Haulbowline, the National Maritime College of Ireland, part of Munster Technological University, is located in Ringaskiddy and that the Port of Cork is one of Ireland's main commercial ports.
'From a tourism perspective, Cork Harbour is Ireland's top cruise destination with over 115,000 passengers visiting each year,' she added. It is estimated that more than €2m will be spent in Cork over the three days.
The workshops attract a number of highly topical issues and leading speakers. The discussion on the EU's response to maritime security involves top French, Italian, and Greek naval and coast guard officers.
A related workshop of protecting subsea infrastructure includes Camino Kavanagh, a visiting senior fellow of the Department of War Studies at King's College London and Lieutenant Commander Mike Brunicardi of the Irish Naval Service.
The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) will examine the EU Maritime Security Strategy.
The Irish Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA), located in Wexford, will discuss the 'complex' area of maritime regulation and EU directives and hold a workshop on improving co-operation between maritime practitioners, bodies and regulators.

Avant Money cuts its Flex Mortgage rate below 3%
Avant Money has announced interest rate reductions on its new Flex Mortgage product, with rates now starting from just 2.98%. The company said this reflects the continued fall in the 12-month Euribor rate, the European benchmark on which the Flex Mortgage is based and is the first time mortgage rates have fallen under 3% since 2022. Introduced in March, Avant Money said its Flex Mortgage rate is now 0.77% lower than the next best available variable rate from other lenders. This equates to a minimum saving of €122.87 per month on the typical mortgage of €300,000 at <80% loan to value and 25 years remaining. With Flex Mortgage rates changing monthly, these new rates are effective from drawdowns on the Flex Mortgage product from 10th June 2025. Brian Lande, Head of Mortgages, at Avant Money, described the product as a game changer for Irish borrowers. "By aligning with the 12-month Euribor, it offers a level of transparency and responsiveness you won't find in traditional variable rate products here in Ireland. Customers benefit from a clear link to European market rates, with annual rate updates they can plan for, and the freedom to manage their mortgage on their own terms."

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs over two years
Procter & Gamble said today it would cut 7,000 jobs, or about 15% of its non-manufacturing roles, globally over the next two years as part of its non-core restructuring program. P&G also plans to exit of some categories, brands and product forms in individual markets, executives said at a Deutsche Bank conference in Paris, adding that the exits could also likely include some brand divestitures. Former Inter Milan boss Inzaghi lands new job with Saudi side before Club World Cup
FORMER INTER BOSS Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth €50 million. 'I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al Hilal,' he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. Advertisement 'The Italian genius is here,' Al Hilal posted. 'Welcome, Simone Inzaghi.' Inzaghi joins the likes of Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic at Al Hilal, which let injury-hit Neymar go in January after just seven appearances since his arrival in August 2023. A source with knowledge of the negotiations last week told AFP that the 'first option' for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has signalled he is leaving rival club Al Nassr, could be a move to Al Hilal. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes this week said he rejected Al Hilal's reported $135 million offer because he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Inzaghi's Inter slumped 5-0 to Qatar-funded Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. His departure was confirmed on Tuesday. The former forward guided Inter to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups since joining in 2021. He took them to two Champions League finals in three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. Inter, PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester City are also among the 32 teams at the expanded Club World Cup, which starts on 15 June. – © AFP 2025
