Predicting LSU baseball pitching availability vs. Arkansas on Wednesday
LSU baseball survived a two-day game in the College World Series, defeating UCLA 9-5 on Tuesday after a rain delay on Monday.
The sides combined for seven runs in the first inning, capped by Jared Jones' three-run home run. From there, a pitching chess game ensued as the Bruins pulled their starter in the second inning. Anthony Eyanson cruised through the second and third frames but didn't return for the resumption.
Casan Evans, Cooper Williams, and Chase Shores combined to keep UCLA at bay on Tuesday. LSU's bullpen looks strong ahead of a rematch with either the Bruins or Arkansas on Wednesday. LSU owns a 3-1 record over the Razorbacks in 2025, including a 4-1 victory in the College World Series opener.
After the game, LSU head coach Jay Johnson said he hadn't thought much about LSU's pitching plan for Wednesday. At that point, Johnson didn't even know the opponent yet. But we do now as the Tigers are set for a rematch with Arkansas.
LSU's pitching staff is in a good spot thanks to Kade Anderson's performance in the opener and Evans' lengthy relief outing.
Here is a projected availability for LSU's pitching staff ahead of Wednesday's game.
Definitely Available
Chase Shores: The right-hander had a light workload on Tuesday, throwing 11 pitches through 1.1 innings. It would be Shores' third appearance in three games in Omaha, but Shores is yet to be taxed. Shores will likely be the first option out of the bullpen on Wednesday as he can go a full inning and get multiple outs.
Zac Cowan: Since his last appearance came in the regional, Cowan is well rested and can go multiple innings on Wednesday. When Cowan is on, he's one of the top pitchers in the SEC. But he's struggled to consistently throw strikes in recent weeks.
Jaden Noot: Though he has yet to pitch in the College World Series, Noot will likely see work on Wednesday if reliable bullpen options get stretched thin.
Mavrick Rizy: Johnson has already turned to Rizy three times in the postseason, and he hasn't allowed an earned run since April 26. If LSU has to play Wednesday and Thursday, Rizy will certainly see action in Omaha.
Conner Ware: Ware last pitched vs. South Carolina on May 15, but he's another name to watch if LSU's bullpen is tested.
Probably Available
Cooper Williams: Against UCLA, Williams made 21 pitches and surrendered two walks. He got just one out before being lifted. Since his pitch count is low, he could go an inning or two but Johnson may use him more situationally depending on batters.
Anthony Eyanson: Eyanson threw 44 pitches through three innings on Tuesday and looked primed for a deep run. Since he has a day of rest on a low pitch count, the right-hander could be used for an inning or against specific hitters.

5 former Eagles poised for huge 2025 seasons

5 former Eagles poised for huge 2025 seasons C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Josh Sweat are among the former Philadelphia Eagles who could have huge 2025 NFL seasons Philadelphia had 11 players depart during the first wave but rebounded, signing 12 players who could help keep a Super Bowl window as the team looks to repeat in 2025. At the same time, C.J. Gardner-Johnson (Texans) and Kenny Pickett (Browns) were traded to free up salary cap space for future moves. On offense, the backup running back and starting right guard departed, leaving an explosive offense with two holes that need to be filled. All wasn't lost, as the Eagles added a running back, three pass-rushing linebackers, two tight ends, a cornerback, and a new long snapper. With mini-camp and the off-season programs complete, we're looking at seven former Philadelphia Eagles who could have huge 2025 NFL seasons. C.J. Gardner-Johnson-Houston Texans Gardner-Johnson is on his third team in as many seasons. After winning Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles traded Gardner-Johnson to the Texans for guard Kenyon Green and draft compensation. Gardner-Johnson recently aired his emotions about being shipped from Philadelphia to Houston. "I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business," Gardner-Johnson told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 this week. "Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never! Led the league in interceptions. What more do you want? "People say, 'He's a hazard, he's this, he's that.' I never been no hazard, bro. They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one. I got three more championships in me. I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch." Gardner-Johnson is an impact player, and Houston improved dramatically. Last season, Gardner-Johnson intercepted six passes and returned one for a touchdown. He recorded 59 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and one forced fumble. Josh Sweat-Arizona Cardinals After losing out on former Eagles defensive lineman Milton Williams, the Cardinals made their first splash of free agency by agreeing to a four-year contract with another former Eagle, pass rusher Josh Sweat. The deal with Arizona is worth $76.4 million, including $41 million guaranteed. Sweat reunites with Jonathan Gannon, now the Cardinals' head coach, who was his defensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, when Sweat turned in the best two-year stretch of his career with 18.5 sacks over those two seasons. Milton Williams -- New England Patriots After playing less than 50% of the snaps during his four years in Philadelphia, Williams headed to Foxboro, knowing the Patriots are expecting more from the 2021 third-round pick. Last season, Williams registered a career-best five sacks and picked up another two in the Eagles' 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Miles Sanders-Dallas Cowboys Dallas went cheap at running back this offseason with free agent additions in Javonte Williams and Sanders, and the Cowboys drafted Jaydon Blue in Round 5 and Phil Mafah in Round 7. Sanders spent the last two years in Carolina, where he rushed for a combined 637 yards and three touchdowns in those two seasons, but he joins a loaded offense, with no true No. 1 running back. Kenny Gainwell-Pittsburgh Steelers A fifth-round draft pick out of Memphis in 2020, Gainwell (5-9, 200) carved out a role as both a running back and kick returner for the Eagles. In four seasons, he rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns in 66 games, four of them starts. He's also caught 102 passes for more than 700 yards and an additional touchdown. With Najee Harris having left in free agency, the Steelers will utilize Gainwell as a complementary back to Jaylen Warren. Darius Slay -- Pittsburgh Steelers Slay, who turned 34 Jan. 1, has been a key member of Philadelphia's secondary since 2020 after a successful run with the Detroit Lions. A six-time Pro Bowl player, Slay has 28 interceptions and 160 pass breakups in his 12-year NFL career. Slay did not record an interception in 2024; he had 13 pass breakups. With the Steelers, he'll offer a solid option on the opposite side of third-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and give Porter a veteran former No. 1 cornerback from whom to continue to learn the tricks of the trade. Bryce Huff -- San Francisco 49ers Huff, who had just 2.5 sacks for the Eagles in a disappointing 2024 season, should be at home again in Robert Saleh's defensive front. Huff returns to the Wide-9 defensive front, where he had a breakout 2023 season with the Jets in which he posted a career-high 10 sacks and 68 pressures on 312 pass-rush snaps -- good for a 21.8% pressure rate that was the best in the NFL, according to Next Gen Stats -- Huff signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Eagles in 2024 free agency. Haason Reddick -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Bucs signed the 30-year-old Reddick, who has registered 59 sacks in eight seasons, to a one-year deal this offseason worth $14 million.

Three key stats from LSU baseball's win over UCLA in College World Series

Three key stats from LSU baseball's win over UCLA in College World Series LSU baseball prevailed in the postponed game against UCLA during the College World Series. The No. 6 seed scored four runs in five innings on Tuesday to defeat the Bruins 9-5 and bring its record to 2-0 in Omaha. The Tigers relied on true freshman Casan Evans to pitch the majority of the contest, with starter Anthony Eyanson forced to the dugout. He turned in 4.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and without or walk. Cooper Williams and Chase Shores combined to end the game. UCLA came in with a bullpen heralded as one of the most talented and deepest groups in the country. Between Monday and Tuesday, it sent eight pitchers to the mound. Starter Landon Stump was charged with the loss, surrendering five runs through two innings. Jared Jones batted in three of those runs with a home run to open the Tigers' scoring on Monday. He stayed hot on Tuesday, as did the top half of LSU's lineup. Here are three key statistics to LSU's win over UCLA in the College World Series. Jared Jones: Four RBIs Extra work with head coach Jay Johnson during Sunday's practice paid off for Jones. He totaled four RBI, including three on a home run in the first inning, two hits, and two runs. The stellar performance comes after a 0-5 showing in the opener against Arkansas. As a result of a slump, Jones moved down in the batting order but Johnson remained confident in the junior slugger. He's finding rhythm at the right time as LSU prepares to continue its run in Omaha. First five hitters score nine runs The first five hitters in LSU's lineup — Derek Curiel, Ethan Frey, Steven Milam, Jake Brown and Jared Jones — scored all nine runs in the contest against the Bruins. Not only are they getting on base via hits and walks but they're converting with runners in scoring position. Batters in those spots against the Razorbacks went a combined 0-13 as the bottom half picked up the slack. Frey crossed the plate four times while working three walks and a hit against UCLA while Jake Brown came through with three hits and two RBI. Bullpen only allows two runs LSU's bullpen surrendered just two earned runs on Tuesday in relief of Eyanson, who could only pitch three innings due to the postponement. Evans has yet to allow a run in the College World Series after appearances against Arkansas and UCLA. Chase Shores continues peaking at the right time as well. He came in with the bases loaded in the eight inning and needed the inning on one pitch. He shut down the Bruins in the ninth and sealed the win.
