He's got a couple of Group One rides to look forward to this weekend but it's a Class Three sprinter giving Harry Bentley cause for excitement ahead of Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting.
After consecutive fast-finishing thirds from double-figure draws, Young Arrow has scored gate two for the second section of the Class Three Ma Wan Handicap (1,200m).
'I really like Young Arrow. He's drawn well for the first time in a very long time, so that's going to help him,' said Bentley, who partners the Douglas Whyte-trained galloper for the fourth straight time.
'He's run massive races the last couple of times. He's knocking on the door and with a good draw he should be thereabouts. He's one I'm really looking forward to. — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 22, 2025
'He's the one that really stands out to me and would be my best chance,' added Bentley of the four-year-old, who will bid to break his Hong Kong maiden at start nine in the city.
Bentley will also ride Quantum Patch among six rides at the Valley before jumping aboard Patch Of Theta for the same owners in this Sunday's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m).
'Quantum Patch is carrying a light weight and he's run some good races, so he's definitely one to be considered,' said Bentley ahead of the Class Three Kap Shui Mun Handicap (1,650m).
'It's a tough race for Patch Of Theta, naturally taking on Ka Ying Rising is not going to be easy.
'But he's a really nice horse and he seems a progressive type. I sat on him the other day in a trial and he gave me a lovely feel, so I'm chuffed to pick the ride up.'
Bentley, who sits on 15 wins for the season including eight already in 2025, jumps aboard Winning Dragon for Tony Cruz in Sunday's other Group One, the Gold Cup (2,000m).
'I'm pleased with how the past few weeks have gone. I feel like I've just got a bit of momentum and I'm riding for some good stables, so that's good,' said the jockey.
'To pick up a couple of Group One rides is great. I'm pleased to be riding in them and hopefully we can be competitive.
'Winning Dragon was good last start [when second in the Group Three Centenary Vase (1,800m)].
'He was carrying a light weight, so that helped, but he travelled into the race really well and just got seen off by a very gutsy horse in Chancheng Glory. You never know. It's a tough ask but you've got to give it a crack.'
While he has become accustomed to being the lone English rider on the Hong Kong roster, Bentley will be one of four Britons donning the silks at Happy Valley on Wednesday night with Hollie Doyle, Tom Marquand and Richard Kingscote in town as injury cover.
'It's good to have them in town. I know Richard really well from back home and having ridden against him for many years,' Bentley said.
'He's a top lad so it will be nice to have him around. It makes a bit of a change having a few Brits in town. I've spoken to him. He's had a few questions about how the place works and what not, so hopefully I've steered him in the right direction.'

Frankie Lor backs brilliance of Purton: ‘Zac always rides this horse better than the other jockeys'

Frankie Lor Fu-chuen is backing the brilliance of Zac Purton to be the difference when Bottomuptogether tackles Saturday's Class Two HKU Business School And Faculty Of Engineering Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin. Bottomuptogether has compiled a strong record over 1,200m on the Sha Tin turf this season without actually winning, racing at the course and distance five times for four seconds and a third. A galloper who likes to race on pace, Bottomuptogether will have to overcome barrier 10 of 11 if he is to add to his wins under Purton at Happy Valley and on the Sha Tin dirt this season. 'This time he has drawn 10, which is a little bit awkward because inside him he has some horses who are quite fast,' said Lor. 'It will depend on how he jumps. If he jumps better than the others maybe he can lead, but if someone goes crazy in front maybe he can take a sit. There's the four-timer! 🙌 Bottomuptogether wins the Class 2 Kowloon Bay Handicap easily to seal @zpurton's Sunday quartet at Sha Tin... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 20, 2025 'I think Zac knows the horse more than me. Zac always rides this horse better than the other jockeys, so I'll just leave it to him.' Bottomuptogether must carry 133lb in a hot Class Two contest featuring the likes of Raging Blizzard, Wunderbar and Gorgeous Win. After three Sha Tin turf wins under Purton to begin his career last season – two at 1,000m and one at 1,200m – saw Bottomuptogether's rating jump 27 points to 79, the four-year-old has pushed onto triple figures this campaign. While Lor feels it's been a slow burn for the son of Shamus Award, he hopes the 102-rated speedster has Group racing in his future. 'I hope so, because he's a horse who has improved slowly, slowly. He just gets a little bit better each time. He's still young, he's only four years old, so I hope next season we can try for Group Races,' said Lor, pointing to the fact Bottomuptogether's full-brother and stablemate, Beauty Live, has won at a mile in Class Two. Ice cold from the Zac-Man! 🥶 FUN N FUN TOGETHER dominates from start to finish to win at Sha Tin under the champion jockey @zpurton. #HKRacing | @FCLOR_RACING — Hong Kong Racing (@HongKong_Racing) May 18, 2025 'His full-brother is Beauty Live so hopefully he can handle a bit longer in time, but at this stage he's still a bit keen in the early stages so I'll leave him at 1,200m until he can relax more.' Also among Lor's eight-strong Sha Tin hand is Fun N Fun Together, a last-start winner who will also carry 133lb under Purton. Drawn gate five for the Class Four HKU Faculties Of Dentistry And Social Sciences Handicap (1,200m) on the all-weather track, Fun N Fun Together is another who likes to set the tone from the front. 'If he can lead by himself he is better. We have drawn five and I hope he can do the same – just jump and roll in front. He's in good form,' Lor said of his four-year-old. Sitting on 44 successes for the campaign – two behind last season's haul – Lor also saddles up Money Tycoon, Dreaming Winner, Musang King, Lucky Archangel, Money Catcher and Victory Moments.

Zheng, Raducanu set for first-ever clash in Queen's

Zheng, Raducanu set for first-ever clash in Queen's Zheng's win over McCartney Kessler sets up a maiden clash with Britain's Emma Raducanu. Photo: Reuters Raducanu booked her spot in the last eight after cruising past Rebecca Sramkova in straight sets. Photo: Reuters Zheng Qinwen survived a scare to reach the Queen's Club quarter-finals as the Chinese top seed beat McCartney Kessler 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Zheng trailed 4-2 in the final set of the last 16 clash against the world number 42. But the Paris Olympic champion roared back to avoid a shock defeat at the Wimbledon warm-up event in west London. Zheng beat Donna Vekic on the clay at Roland Garros last year to become the first Asian player to win Olympic gold in a singles event and also reached the Australian Open final in 2024. The 22-year-old, currently fifth in the WTA rankings, bowed out in the French Open quarter-finals recently and is hoping to make her first strong run at Wimbledon, where she has never been past the third round in three visits. Success at Queen's would be a significant boost to her Wimbledon aspirations and next up for the Chinese star is a last eight clash with former US Open champion Emma Raducanu. British wildcard Raducanu eased to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova. The 22-year-old will officially become British number one on Monday after compatriot Katie Boulter suffered a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat against Russian fifth seed Diana Shnaider. Raducanu has been troubled by poor form and back spasms throughout her 2025 campaign, but the world number 37 has been revitalised by playing in front of the British crowd at Queen's. "It wasn't easy. I don't think it was my cleanest performance, but I'm really happy to have pushed through in some tight moments," she said. "It was really helpful when it was coming back in the first set to have that roar of support to help me get through that last service game, so I appreciate that," she added. In the first women's event at Queen's for 52 years, 2022 Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Elena Rybakina made the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Britain's Heather Watson. Rybakina will play Germany's Tatjana Maria in the last eight on Friday, while Australian Open holder Madison Keys faces Shnaider and Emma Navarro takes on fellow American Amanda Anisimova. (AFP)

Britney Wong doubles up again at Sha Tin as Cheval Valiant leads them a merry dance

Britney Wong Po-ni landed consecutive Sha Tin doubles headlined by Cheval Valiant's all-the-way win in the Class Four Lai On Handicap (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 26-year-old smashed out of the gates on the Charm Spirit galloper and never looked back, crossing over to the stands rail from gate nine and setting comfortable fractions on the front end. When the pair were faced by a myriad of challengers in the final 200m, Wong galvanised her willing partner and gamely fended off $57 roughie Straight To Glory and $6.8 second favourite Lahore by a neck. It was the second straight double for Wong and the fourth consecutive winning meeting for the 10lb apprentice, who was teaming up with the horse that provided her with her first Hong Kong win back in September. Britney Wong grabs a double! ✌️ Cheval Valiant was the apprentice's first winner in Hong Kong last year and today she's back aboard @DJWhyteTrainer's galloper successfully at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 'He was my first win and I know him very well,' said Wong of the Douglas Whyte-trained Cheval Valiant. 'Thank you to Mr Whyte for putting me back on because I had to chase this ride, actually, and I'm happy that everything has gone well today and I have had another win. I'm very happy.' There was a huge sting in the tail post race, however, with Wong copping a three-day ban and HK$15,000 fine for careless riding in the early stages. Earlier, Wong got the card off to the perfect start in combination with Manfred Man Ka-leung for the second consecutive Sha Tin meeting when Ruby Sailing was another gate-to-wire winner in the Class Five Chak On Handicap (1,200m). Ruby Sailing is not for catching! 🔥 Apprentice Britney Wong drives the Starspangledbanner gelding to a first win for Manfred Man at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 It was a maiden victory at the 20th attempt for the son of Starspangledbanner, who showed tremendous early speed to lead from gate eight and never looked in danger of being caught. Wong got serious at the 400m pole and the pair surged into an unassailable lead, winning by one and a quarter lengths from fast-finishing $2.4 favourite King Oberon. Elsewhere, French ace Antoine Hamelin notched another timely winner thanks to Sky Prophet's upset win at $19.2 in the Class Five Chung On Handicap (1,400m). The Casper Fownes-trained four-year-old was made to work hard to get to the lead from barrier 13, but once there Hamelin controlled the fractions to a tee. Sky Prophet won't quit! 💥 Tough first win for the Caspar Fownes trainee at Sha Tin with @AntoineHamelin as he narrowly denies a rampaging Only U in a thriller... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 The pair looked vulnerable to Lapras turning in, but after fending off that rival in a protracted duel, they had just enough to scramble home ahead of the desperately unlucky $1.8 favourite Only U, who lashed home and only missed by a head after a torrid passage. 'It's nice to get a winner today – it's hot, but it's less hot when you win,' said Hamelin. 'I think the horse was in good form and didn't deserve to be so long in the odds. I believed in him [and] I thought he was a chance, the only concern was the draw. 'But he had a good start, he led, he controlled the race and he held that to the line.' Hamelin will depart Hong Kong and return to France at the end of this season, but he will be giving his all until the end of the season. 'I will just do my best to the end. It's hard to plan a target a month before I leave but I will just do my best and try to get as many winners as I can before I leave,' said the jockey.
