Pogacar on cusp of 4th Tour de France victory
Paris
Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France from a breakaway in Pontarlier as Tadej Pogacar came through the penultimate day unscathed to ensure he will wear yellow into Paris on Sunday.
Groves left Frank van den Broek and Briton Jake Stewart behind with 16 kilometres of the rolling 184km stage from Nantua remaining, taking advantage of their hesitancy to quickly build a lead as he won by 55 seconds from Van den Broek, completing a trilogy with wins in all three Grand Tours.
Behind, the peloton rolled in some seven minutes down, happy to survive a damp day that saw several riders crash as Pogacar retained his 4 minute 24 second lead over rival Jonas Vingegaard on the last day before Paris.
The addition of three ascents of the Montmartre climb to Sunday's finale should rule out the usual Champs-Elysees sprint and keep the racing on for one more day - subject to a threat of rain - but Pogacar can almost start celebrating his fourth Tour title and begin plotting a record-equalling fifth.
Groves' first career Tour stage win was a third of this race for his Alpecin-Deceuninck team but the first since stage two, with their previous two winners Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel since lost to injury and illness.
Pogacar mathematically secured the king of the mountains' polka dot jersey early on this stage, with yellow surely set to follow on Sunday.

Liverpool boss Slot pleased to see young Ngumoha having an impact
PA Media/dpa London Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is happy 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha is already influencing games but admits the teenager still has plenty to learn. Ngumoha, who joined from Chelsea a year ago, has been one of the stand-out players in the Reds' two matches in the Far East and produced another impressive cameo off the bench, capped by a brilliant individual strike, in a 3-1 over Yokohama F Marinos in Tokyo. Fellow academy graduate Trey Nyoni, 18 last month, scored Liverpool's second goal after club-record signing Florian Wirtz had opened his account for the club with the equaliser just after the hour mark. Liverpool's spending this summer may be approaching £300 million ($347.2 million), but Slot believes there is always a place for academy players who can contribute. 'Rio again showed the quality he has and that's nice for us because we have a lot of very good players,' Slot said at his post-match press conference. 'But to get some very good players through the academy is always helpful and always gives energy to a team as well. 'It's always nice to see young players from 16, 17 or 18 years old already impacting a game. If you are 16 and you can impact the game like he did, that's definitely worth a compliment.' Slot did, however, sound a word of caution. 'There was also a moment in the game where he should have squared it to Macca (Alexis Mac Allister) or Curtis (Jones) so (there are) also learning parts for him,' he added. Forward Hugo Ekitike made his first start since last week's £79 million move from Eintracht Frankfurt and played the first 45 minutes, while another new signing, Giorgi Mamardashvili, started in goal after Alisson Becker returned to Brazil for personal reasons. After conceding 10 minutes into the second half Liverpool turned things around with the help of their youngsters. 'More than a few times there were some very good moments in build-up, but what I also saw in the goal we conceded and in the first half the big chance we conceded was that we had to work harder in those moments to sprint back than we did,' said Slot. 'That is something that also happened to us when we played Milan. It could be (to do) with a tough training camp and it could be (to do) with the heat circumstances - but that's something that we definitely have to improve towards Bilbao (on Monday). 'I thought last season was already tough, but if you look at what all the Premier League teams are doing, the Premier League is even going to get stronger. 'We need to be ready for that - that's where my full focus is at the moment.'

Le Court secures historic Africa win at women's Tour de France
Mauritian Kim Le Court became the first African to win a stage on the women's Tour de France.. It was a case of double celebration for the 29-year-old who, on Wednesday took the fifth stage honours in a sprint to reclaim the leader's yellow jersey. Le Court edged Dutch duo Demi Vollering and Anna van der Breggen after a hilly 166km ride, the longest of the Tour, from Chasseneuil-du-Poitou Futuroscope to Gueret. Overnight leader Marianne Vos lost yellow to the AG Insurance-Soudal team leader after finishing eighth, 33 seconds adrift, on the day. Le Court, who had a brief spell already at the top of the general classification after stage two, now leads France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot by 18 seconds. 'It's really been a dream start to the Tour. The stage win, the yellow jersey,' said Le Court. 'I wasn't even thinking about it when we started in Brittany. 'As for what happens next, we'll see, since I don't know my limits in the mountains, this Tour being my first major stage race where my team has asked me to compete for the overall classification.' Vollering, the Tour winner in 2023 and favourite for this edition, is third at 23sec after recovering from a heavy fall on Monday. Last year's winner, Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma, took fourth in the stage to sit well placed at 24sec off the overall lead. Thursday's sixth stage is a mountainous 123.7km ride from Clermont-Ferrand to Ambert featuring three ascents, including the category one climb up the Col du Beal, with the race finishing on Sunday.

Felix leaves Chelsea to join Saudi's Al Nassr
PA Media/dpa London Joao Felix has left Chelsea to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr on a permanent deal. The 25-year-old Portugal international moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid last summer, having had an earlier spell with the Blues on loan in 2023. He made 20 appearances for Enzo Maresca's side in the first half of the season - but started only three Premier League games - before leaving for AC Milan on loan in January. 'We thank Joao for his efforts across his two spells at the club and wish him well for the future,' Chelsea said in the statement. Felix has signed a two-year contract with his new club. Al-Nassr have reportedly paid an initial £26 million ($34.8 million) transfer fee, although add-ons could see that rise as high as £43 million - close to the sum Chelsea paid Atletico for his services last summer. He joins his Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, who announced his arrival with a short video on social media in which Felix said: 'I am here to spread joy. Let's win together.'
