Emma Raducanu praises Wimbledon for ‘amazing job' of blocking stalker from competition
British tennis star Emma Raducanu said Wimbledon did 'an amazing job' in preventing a man who was accused of stalking her from buying tickets to the championships at SW19 this month.
The man followed Raducanu to at least four competitions earlier this year, and on noticing him at a tournament in Dubai, the world No. 38 previously said she 'couldn't see the ball through tears' due to her distress.
British media reported that the man had tried to obtain tickets to Wimbledon, but was flagged and blocked by the All England Club's security system.
'Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job. I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK,' Raducanu told BBC Sport.
'I know that I am not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won't be the last – not just as an athlete, but females in general.'
In March, Raducanu noticed what the WTA called a 'fixated' man during a match at the Dubai Tennis Championships, explaining that the incident left her 'distraught.'
'I saw him in the first game of the match and I was like, 'I don't know how I'm going to finish,'' she said at the time. 'I literally couldn't see the ball through tears. I could barely breathe. I was like, 'I need to just take a breather.''
The man, who had also been at previous tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha before appearing in Dubai, was ejected from the tournament and later detained by Dubai police. He signed a document pledging to 'maintain distance' from Raducanu.
Meanwhile, Raducanu will pair up with five-time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at this year's revamped US Open mixed doubles, which will take place on August 19 and 20, several days before the scheduled start of the last slam of the year.
'He asked me earlier on in the year. I was very surprised and honored and obviously excited,' Raducanu told BBC Sport, adding that she 'went through the formality of asking my coach. But of course, I'm gonna say yes.'
Raducanu, who shot to fame when she won the 2021 US Open aged 18 having come through qualifying, said that she has a close friendship with Alcaraz which blossomed in 2021.
'We go back a long way. And I think we both started getting to know each other a lot more in 2021 and when I had that run at Wimbledon. … I think he won, like, in five sets in the first round or something,' she explained.
'Ever since, we stayed in touch, and he's done so well obviously since and continued winning. … It's been amazing to see.'
Raducanu has also reflected on their long-standing friendship and 'genuine connection' with Alcaraz
'It is nice and I think, for all of us, we really value those connections that we had from when we were young,' Raducanu said, per The Guardian.
'Because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age and because that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends – but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you.'

Tom Aspinall's coach erupts on UFC: ‘I can't think of a worse way' to announce him as champion
After decades of training, which forced him to undergo 24 knee surgeries and two disc replacements along with a litany of other injuries, Andy Aspinall was understandably a bit underwhelmed when his and son Tom's odyssey to become heavyweight champion of the world ended with a phone call around midnight in England this past Saturday night. 'I found out from Tom,' Aspinall explained to Uncrowned. Advertisement 'At the same time Tom was calling me to tell me that Hunter [Campbell] had told him, Hunter text me saying, 'Dana [White] has just announced that Tom is the champ' — which was the same message he had sent Tom.' 'I sent a message back to Hunter saying, 'I can't think of a worse way you could have done it'. I just think it's, I don't know if pathetic is the word — I just feel they didn't think about it. For me, the heavyweight championship of an organization is quite a big thing and I don't think Tom deserved to find out at a press conference in the middle of the night.' 'I can't think of a worse way to do it, maybe if they had've woke us up to tell us it would've been worse,' he added. 'We just happened to be awake at the time. It's poor man management of Jones and Tom. I like the personnel at the UFC, but for me, they just don't do things right sometimes. Of course it's a massively successful business, but I think something like that deserved more thought after everything we've been through with this.' The rumor mill has been swirling with options for Aspinall's first title defense. Names like Alex Pereira and even PFL's Francis Ngannou have been floated as possibilities. I just don't know if he's the right person, but maybe he's the logical fight to make.' Despite his son being crowned champion, Andy Aspinall won't forget the frustrating situations he's had to deal with over the past 19 months as a coach. From taking short-notice title fights to being forced to the sidelines as Jones' figured out his next move, the motivation of his fighter has been tested more than ever throughout the uncertainty. 'It didn't happen, so we had to wait a year for him to fight Stipe, and that was a bit of farce because they both looked out of shape and slow. We had a meeting with Hunter and Dana after that and they said, 'You're next.' The only thing Tom said was that he didn't want to be Michael Chandlered and they assured him he wouldn't be. They said it would probably happen at International Fight Week. What played out then was a situation where we weren't kept in the loop about anything — all we were told is, 'We're going to get it done.'' 'We've gone from fighting on two weeks' notice for an interim title to defending an interim title, which doesn't make sense at all. We took the fight in Manchester [at UFC 304] to avenge what happened against [Curtis] Blaydes and then they asked us to be backup fighter even though we all knew nobody would take the fight. We've never stopped training, but this period really tested Tom's motivation, and that's a worrying thing in this line of work where you're sparring massive men who are trying to take your head off. Manhunt as schoolgirl, 15, raped in underpass near London shopping centre
Police are investigating the rape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in an underpass close to an east London shopping centre. The youngster was attacked in St Edwards Way, Romford, around 11.35pm on Sunday. She is now being supported by specialist officers and the Metropolitan Police has stepped up patrols near The Brewery shops and leisure district. Forensic teams have cordoned off the underpass, including the entrances on London Road and High Street. Havering Councillor David Taylor said he has written to senior police and called for an urgent public meeting. He added: 'I am devastated by the news, which will leave many women feeling afraid to walk alone in our town and I pray for justice for the woman assaulted.' No arrests have been made. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 'On Sunday, June 22 at 11.36pm police were called to St Edwards Way, Romford to reports a girl had been raped. 'Officers attended and assisted the victim, a 15-year-old girl. 'She is currently being treated by specialist officers. A crime scene currently remains in place. 'We understand the concern this has caused in the community and people can expect to see an increased police presence in the area.'

Liverpool want to sign €75m SUPERSTAR striker
