Liverpool want to sign €75m SUPERSTAR striker

Liverpool are celebrating a British-record transfer for Florian Wirtz, who arrives from Bayer Leverkusen on a fee that could reach £116m overall.
They have also signed Wirtz's former club-mate Jeremie Frimpong as well as Hungarian goalkeeper Armin Pecsi. Soon Milos Kerkez will be announced as a new Liverpool player but sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot won't stop there.

The next big target is a new centre-forward. Neither Darwin Nunez nor Diogo Jota have managed to win over Arne Slot thus far. And for that reason, the Merseysiders are expected to go into the market for a new high-quality option.
Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro are among the No9s linked and another intriguing name has emerged on the radar in recent weeks.
Liverpool want Osimhen
Victor Osimhen, 26, is available with only one year left on his Napoli contract. The Nigerian superstar hit 37 goals in 41 games overall for Galatasaray on loan last season - helping his side to a Turkish league and cup double.

But there is little chance of him seeing out his Napoli contract - with a reported €75m release clause for overseas clubs.
And now it's been claimed by a source in Naples that Liverpool ARE interested in adding Osimhen - with complex negotiations between the Reds' club bosses and their Napoli counterparts now underway.
"There is a market connection between Napoli and Liverpool,' Valter De Maggio of Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli said according to Area Napoli.
'The English club wants Osimhen and Napoli from this point of view does not make any discounts on the clause, therefore asking for 75 million euros as per the contract.'
Napoli request info on Chiesa and Darwin
As part of the talks, Napoli are reported to have asked for information about Darwin Nunez as well as Federico Chiesa. Head coach Antonio Conte is seeking attacking upgrades and both Liverpool title-winners could potentially fit the bill.

'The sporting director of the Neapolitan club, Giovanni Manna, has tried to ask for information for the two Reds forwards, namely Darwin Nunez and the Italian former Juventus player Federico Chiesa,' the report continues.
It's been claimed that Liverpool have offered a straight-up swap deal with the Italian Serie A title holders. However, Napoli president Aurelio Di Laurentiis is seeking to add a cash total to the deal.

Napoli value Osimhen at €75m
"Liverpool would have opened up to Napoli by proposing an equal exchange between the players involved in this operation,' the report continues.
'Aurelio De Laurentiis, however, has other ideas and is not listening: the president of the blue club is asking for Chiesa, Nunez and 20 million for Osimhen's registration.'

Napoli's buyout for Osimhen is €75m. It's also been reported that Liverpool will settle for €15m for Chiesa. Add €20m to that sum and you get to €35m.
The remaining amount to reach Osimhen's clause is €40m - which is probably a bit less than Liverpool want to achieve for Darwin. Some high-stakes talks will now take place over the exact terms of the deal.

Gareth Southgate to receive knighthood at Windsor Castle

Former England manager Gareth Southgate will be among those accepting honours on Wednesday as he receives a knighthood at Windsor Castle. The 54-year-old, who led the Three Lions to consecutive European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, was recognised for his services to association football in the New Year Honours. He is the fourth England boss to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson. Sir Gareth resigned from the role after eight years in charge following England's 2-1 final defeat to Spain in July last year, before being succeeded by Thomas Tuchel. In a social media post following the announcement in December, he joked that he was unlikely to be called 'Sir' by his family. 'It has been the greatest honour to represent my country as both a player and a manager for some 20 years and to be part of the game I love for almost 40. I am incredibly thankful for the amazing people and teams who have supported me both on and off the field,' he said. 'A special thank you to my family for their constant love and encouragement, though I must admit they've made it clear that the titles I hold at home will remain unchanged.' Sir Gareth won 57 caps for England as a player between 1995 and 2004 and played at three major tournaments, including the 1998 World Cup. He also had a distinguished 16-year career at club level, operating mainly as a defender for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough and making more than 600 appearances. Sir Gareth first joined the Football Association as head of elite development in February 2011 after being sacked as Middlesbrough manager, and went on to coach the under-21s side before his appointment as England manager, initially on a temporary basis, in September 2016. England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, when Sir Gareth turned the waistcoat into a must-have fashion accessory. The team then ended its 55-year wait for a men's final at Euro 2020, delayed 12 months by Covid, before being agonisingly beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley. A late defeat to Spain three years later again saw the side just miss out on national silverware. Overall, Sir Gareth took charge of 102 matches and is the only manager of the England men's team to lead them to two major tournament finals. Giving an address at the University of London in March, he spoke about how the belief and resilience gained throughout his career in football had 'picked me up when I've been down, grounded me in success, and given me purpose amidst the noise of public life'. Sir Gareth was previously made an OBE for his services to football in the 2019 New Year Honours. British and Irish Lions wing Gerald Davies is also set to be knighted at the investiture ceremony for his services to rugby union and to voluntary and charitable service in Wales. Davies, 80, played for Wales for 12 years in the 1960s and 1970s and won three Grand Slams, and went on to serve as president of the Welsh Rugby Union between 2019 and 2023. Reacting to the honour, he told the PA news agency: 'I feel very emotional about it. I am surprised by it. Words are really quite inadequate to describe it. 'It comes out of the blue. I was dumbstruck in many ways, but you don't achieve these things on your own.'

Australian teenager Gout Gout lowers his national record in the 200 in his first pro race in Europe

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) — Gout Gout is 17, he's being compared with Usain Bolt and he has lowered his national record in his first professional race in Europe. The Australian high school senior improved his own national record when he won the 200 meters at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava in 20.02 seconds. It's not the fastest he's ever run over the half-lap sprint, but it's gaining him more attention. Gout posted two wind-assisted times under 20 seconds, clocking 19.84 and 19.98 at the national championship at Perth in April, but neither was considered legal because the wind was above allowable threshholds. Even without those two sub-20 times, he's still in the top seven all-time for Under-20s, a list that includes Bolt, the great Jamaica sprinter who dominated the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. At age 16 last December, Gout ran 20.04 seconds to win the 200 at the national high school championships and break a 56-year-old national record over that distance set by 1968 Olympic silver medalist Peter Norman. Running in Lane 6 at Ostrava on Tuesday — the timing made it perfect for Wednesday morning TV news shows back in Australia — Gout finished powerfully to surge past Cuba's Reynier Mena on his inside over the last 30 meters. 'Another national record! Pretty happy with that. It's not a bad first-up in Europe,' he said. 'I've felt stronger in training these last couple of months and I've felt good since I got to Europe last Thursday.' Gout was born in Ipswich, near Brisbane, in Queensland state. His parents are South Sudanese immigrants who moved to Australia in 2005. Gout will race again in Europe next month before returning to Australia for some school work and preparation for the world championships in Tokyo in September. ___ AP sports:
