Baylor holds off Mississippi State in final seconds to win 75-72 in March Madness

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Robert Wright scored 19 points, V.J. Edgecombe added 16 and No. 9 Baylor squeaked past No. 8 Mississippi State 75-72 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Langston Love added 15 points and Norchad Omier had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bears (20-14), who led by 11 points in the second half but had to hold off the Bulldogs in the final seconds — and even tenths of seconds.
Josh Hubbard had 26 points to lead the Bulldogs (21-13), who were seeking their first March Madness victory since 2008.
Wright's driving, underhanded, left-handed layup gave Baylor a 37-32 lead at halftime, its biggest to that point. A free throw by Omier made it 60-49 with 8:10 remaining.
But the Bulldogs stormed back and cut the lead to one with 29 seconds left when KeShawn Murphy scored in the lane on a baby hook.
The Bulldogs fouled Edgecombe with 9.3 seconds left and the Big 12 freshman of the year made both.
Claudell Harris Jr airballed a 3-pointer with a chance to tie the game with 1.1 seconds left. Omier was fouled on the inbounds play and the game was seemingly over. But more time was put on the clock and Omier missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The Bulldogs grabbed the rebound with 0.2 seconds left and called timeout.
Hubbard's 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good, although it may not have counted. Takeaways
Baylor: Coach Scott Drew's Bears entered the tournament having lost six of their last 10 games, but survived this time. It was Drew's 21st NCAA Tournament victory.
Mississippi State: This is the third time in as many seasons that coach Chris Jans led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament. Before his arrival, the program had reached March Madness just once since 2010. Up next

Galvin receives praise from former Tigers star
Former Wests Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks says it was the 'smart decision' for the club to part ways with Lachlan Galvin given the contract saga would have become a messy distraction for both parties if it was allowed to fester. He's seen the toll contract negotiations can have on young stars at the club, and he hopes both Galvin and the Tigers can move on swiftly now that it's all sorted. 'I think the smart decision was made for them to part ways,' he told the NewsWire. 'It would have been a distraction if it went for another year. It's good for both parties. 'I don't know too much about what's going on, but looking at it, I feel like he's handled it really well for a 19-year-old. 'Not many guys that age can go through that with all the media pressure and so much noise going on. 'He still came out and played some good footy. There'll still be some news going on around him, but after a few weeks playing for the Bulldogs, hopefully that goes away and he can focus on playing good footy. 'He's a great player and he's a good young kid as well. Hopefully, it works out for him.' While Galvin has been the talk of the town lately, a man at the opposite end of his career has also been in the headlines with chat around whether Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans should keep his spot in the team. The veteran halfback has been a loyal servant for the Maroons throughout his illustrious career, but there have been calls for Tom Dearden to replace him following the game one defeat. Cherry-Evans put the disappointment behind him to star with three try assists as Manly bounced back to thrash the Broncos on Saturday night, with the skipper showing he still has it just days after copping a tough loss in Brisbane. 'When you have a big game like that (the Origin opener) and end up losing, I feel like you want to go out there and play straight away. He really led from the front,' Brooks said. 'To be doing what he's doing at his age by backing up three days later and then putting on a clinic, it just shows that he's a great player. 'There's been a lot of noise, so to put that to the side and put on a performance was great. 'I don't think the halves were the problem (for Queensland). They lost to a good Blues side, so whatever way they go is up to them. 'Hopefully, for his sake, he gets another crack.'

Coastal Carolina baseball coach rips Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan after reported outburst: 'Absolutely disrespectful'
Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan reportedly got into an altercation with tournament staff on Sunday over an apparent scheduling change. Schnall, who led Coastal Carolina to a 1-0 win over East Carolina to advance into the super regional round of the NCAA baseball tournament, called out O'Sullivan for a reported altercation on site earlier in the day. Advertisement O'Sullivan, according to multiple reports, had 'ripped into' tournament staff over a scheduling change. Specifics of that incident aren't known, but Schnall made sure to speak out about it after his team's win. 'Another coach disrespected our associate AD, who works as hard as anybody in our entire program,' Schnall said. 'He disrespected our field crew, who are the salt of the earth. These guys would do anything for our program. It's not OK. This needs to be brought up. Absolutely disrespectful. 'As a coach, it's our job to mentor young kids and the way he treated the two site reps, the way he treated our associate AD, the way he treated our field crew is absolutely unacceptable. That's what I'm most disappointed about. This is a national champion coach who thinks he can come in here and try to bully people around. "I'm disappointed. East Carolina beat Florida 11-4 to knock the Gators out of the tournament. Coastal Carolina then beat the Pirates in the final game at the regional. That pushed the Chanticleers, who are the No. 13 seed nationally, into the super regional for the first time since 2016. They'll take on Auburn in the next round.

No. 10 overall seed Mississippi beats Murray State 19-8 to stay alive in Oxford Regional
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Will Furniss hit two home runs, including the first of three straight in the fourth inning by 10th-overall seed Mississippi, and the Rebels rolled a 19-8 victory over Murray State on Sunday to force a showdown at the Oxford Regional. The Rebels (43-20) eliminated Georgia Tech with an 11-9 win earlier Sunday and need another win over the Racers on Monday to advance to the super regionals. Murray State (41-14) sent Ole Miss to the loser's bracket with a 9-6 victory in Friday's opener. Furniss hit a two-run shot on the final pitch from starter Kane Elmy to ignite an eight-run third inning that saw the Rebels erase 3-2 deficit. Furniss, Judd Utermark and Isaac Humphrey began a five-run fourth with solo shots off reliever Reese Oakley to make it 15-4. Furniss had four hit and four RBIs. Mitchell Sanford had three singles, driving in three and scoring twice. Humphrey finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Austin Fawley had two hits and three RBIs. His two-run homer in the second got the Rebels off and running. Dustin Mercer three hits for Murray State with two doubles and two RBIs. Mississippi is making its 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels have played in six College World Series and won it in their most recent appearance in 2022.
