USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Alex Morrow in focus USC No. 97 memories are hard to find, but Alex Morrow was part of the Pete Carroll era
The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 97 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. The options for number 97 are quite limited, but today, we will be looking back at Alex Morrow.
Position: Defensive lineman
Years played at USC: 2003-2007
Career highlights: After redshirting his first year at USC in 2003, Morrow served as a key backup defensive lineman for the Trojans from 2004-2007. Over those four years, he recorded 14 total tackles and three sacks.
Had he come to USC in a different era, Morrow may well have been able to crack the starting lineup. However, Pete Carroll's Trojans teams were stacked on the defensive line with stars such as Shaun Cody, Sedrick Ellis, and Lawrence Jackson, relegating Morrow to a reserve role.
After USC: Despite never starting in college, Morrow earned a tryout with the New York Giants during the leadup to the 2008 NFL season. However, he did not make the team's final roster, and never played a snap in the NFL.The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! USMNT falls to Turkey 2-1 in friendly for their 3rd consecutive loss

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense to beat the United States 2-1 in a rainy friendly on Saturday, dealing the Americans their third straight loss as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as coach Mauricio Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. With a year to go before co-hosting the World Cup, the U.S. plays Switzerland on Tuesday at Nashville, Tenn., in another friendly, then opens the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15. The Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang. Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his U.S. debut. Matt Freese, a starter for Major League Soccer's New York City, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. It was the earliest U.S. goal since Shaq Moore scored 20 seconds in against Canada during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal. Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games. Turkey goalkeeper Berke Özer also made his international debut. Preparing for the start of its World Cup qualifying campaign in September, Turkey has six wins, one loss and one draw in its last eight games.

Minnesota Vikings Defender Mekhi Blackmon Delivers Strong Statement at OTAs on CB Room Concerns

Minnesota Vikings Defender Mekhi Blackmon Delivers Strong Statement at OTAs on CB Room Concerns originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Vikings' OTAs were open to the media on Tuesday, and some players had to come to the defense of their roster. Advertisement It's the second week for the Vikings at OTAs as this is voluntary workout for the players. This is an opportunity for new players and veterans to get back into game shape and establish a routine before training camp begins next month. There have been questions surrounding the cornerback room after the team did not select one in the 2025 NFL Draft. One Vikings defensive back was not having any of the criticism of the room on social media. Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mekhi Rempel-USA TODAY Sports Vikings cornerback Mekhi Blackmon spoke with the media on Tuesday where he shut down the social media talk of the cornerback room not looking as strong. 'We got a real good room this year. I see a lot of stuff on Twitter. We got a real good room from Zay, Jeff, you know we brought Theo back, TT. A lot of new guys coming in we got a real good room.' Advertisement 'Y'all know. A lot of people are concerned about our room. I would say we have a real good room. A lot of good people coming in.' Blackmon is making a return to the field after missing all of last year with a torn ACL injury. He was originally a third-round pick of the Vikings back in 2023. Some of those additions he was talking about were Jeff Okudah and Isaiah Rodgers, who entered their first year in Minnesota. Byron Murphy Jr. is the veteran in the room alongside Blackmon, who is expected to compete for a starting job. At safety, Harrison Smith is the veteran and leader everyone knows as he is back for potentially his final season in the NFL. Josh Metellus is expected to compete for the other safety job. Advertisement The concern with the room is that they lost their top cornerback, Stephon Gilmore, to free agency. This is a Vikings secondary that was the fifth worst against the pass in 2024, allowing 242 yards per game. There is a ton of potential in the room, but it will all fall on how newcomers Okudah and Rodgers play. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has been high on Rodgers all offseason and sees him as an every-down starting corner. OTAs are only in week two, so it's premature to come up with conclusions, but it's fair to say the Vikings' cornerback room has heard the criticism and is ready to prove the NFL wrong. Vikings' Trade for Sam Bradford Deemed Worst Trade in 10 Years

Vikings' Trade for Sam Bradford Deemed Worst Trade in 10 Years originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Vikings haven't had the best luck at quarterback, but a few moments have altered the course of the franchise dramatically. Advertisement Coming off a Pro Bowl and playoff berth in his second season, 2014 first-round pick Teddy Bridgewater was poised to take a great leap with the Vikings before he suffered a devastating knee injury late in training camp. The Vikings had just a few weeks to find a new starting quarterback and were rightfully scrambling, leading to what Bleacher Report deemed the franchise's worst trade of the decade. Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer alongside quarterback Sam Bradford (8) against the New Orleans J. Rebilas-Imagn Images "In panic mode, then-GM Rick Spielman traded for [Sam] Bradford. Of course, the 2010 first overall pick (by the Rams) had his own lengthy injury history—including torn ACLs in 2013 and 2014—which is why the Eagles traded up for Carson Wentz in the 2016 draft and were willing to move Bradford afterward," . Advertisement "The Vikings surrendered a 2017 first-round pick and a conditional 2018 fourth-round pick. That's a lot for an oft-injured player who clearly wasn't considered Philly's QB of the future. In return, Minnesota got 17 starts over two seasons out of Bradford," he added. Despite Bradford's late arrival, the Vikings went 5-0 to start the season before fizzling out and finishing 8-8. Bradford went 7-8, throwing for 3,877 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. However, his Vikings tenure was largely overshadowed by the emergence of Case Keenum. Bradford started just two of the first five games of the 2017 season due to a knee injury before he was lost for the season with an ACL tear, thrusting Keenum, the team's No. 3 quarterback, into the starting role. Keenum led the Vikings on a run to the NFC title game and was the orchestrator of the Minneapolis Miracle. Advertisement The Vikings eventually opted for more stability at the position, signing Kirk Cousins to the first fully guaranteed contract in NFL history. However, despite six seasons and $185 million invested in Cousins, the Vikings never returned to the NFC Championship Game. After trying to make it work with Cousins, the new regime of Kevin O'Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has hitched itself to J.J. McCarthy as the next long-term answer at the position.
