Google unveiled the main new features of Android 16 at its "The Android Show: I/O Edition' event, ahead of its annual Google I/O conference, scheduled for May 20 and 21, 2025. This enhanced version of Android introduces significant design changes, places artificial intelligence at the heart of the system, and is much more secure.
Android 16 will first bring a new design, dubbed "Material 3 Expressive." This is the most visible evolution to the system, with its vivid colors, new typography and fluid animations, promising a more dynamic and personalized user experience. The idea, of course, is to appeal to an ever-growing audience, especially young people. The system also introduces "Live Updates,' a dynamic notification system reminiscent of "Live Activities' on iOS. These notifications enable users to track activities such as journeys or deliveries in real time, directly from the smartphone's lock screen.
Unsurprisingly, Google's Gemini AI will be more than ever at the heart of the user experience, becoming the operating system's new intelligent assistant. The aim is to offer more natural, contextual interactions across Google's various applications, such as Gmail and Photos.
Last but not least, Google intends to make significant improvements in terms of security and privacy. The most striking announcement concerns the detection of fraudulent calls, as well as unprecedented protection against unauthorized system modifications during phone calls. Similarly, AI should make it easier to identify and report fraudulent SMS messages in Google Messages.
Android 16 is slated to launch at the beginning of June – a major first, since new versions of the operating system usually roll out in the fall. Google's Pixel devices will be the first to benefit, gradually followed by devices from other smartphone manufacturers. Google claims that there are now more than three billion active Android-powered devices worldwide. – AFP Relaxnews

Google unveils modest upgrades to Pixel smartphones, other gadgets

The Google logo is seen outside the company's offices in London, Britain, June 24, 2025. REUTERS/Carlos Jasso/File Photo (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google introduced on Wednesday a new lineup of Pixel smartphones and gadgets, intensifying its efforts to embed artificial intelligence across a wide ecosystem of products. The products were launched at the annual 'Made by Google' event held in New York, which marked a return to more modest upgrades of its smartphones, smartwatch, and wireless earbuds compared to last year's event that industry analystssaid was bigger and bolder than usual. New AI features rolling out with the Pixel 10 lineup include a "coach" in the camera app to help users take better pictures and an assistant that displays relevant information without a user's explicit request, such as showing a flight confirmation email when they call an airline. The exteriors of the phones remain largely the same, though Google added a telephoto lens on the base model to bring it in line with the cameras on its pricier units. Prices, starting at $799 for the base unit and $1,799 for the foldable model, remained flat despite concerns earlier this year that some smartphones could experience drastic price hikes due to U.S. tariffs. The Pixel 10, as well as the souped-upPixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, will be available later this month, while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is slated to ship in October. All the Pixel phones are equipped with Google's latest mobile processor, Tensor G5, and for the first time, feature a magnetic charging technology called Pixelsnap that is reminiscent of the MagSafe functionality on rival Apple's iPhones. Google unveiled a series of Pixelsnap chargers, cases and phone stands to accompany the launch. MARKET SHARE WOES Google's annual hardware event has traditionally served as a way for the company to show off to device makers and software developers the potential of Android, a key strategic component to battling competition from Apple, which has its own operating system for its iPhones. Though Google develops the Android operating system underlying more than 80% of smartphones worldwide, its Pixel line generates a fraction of the sales of other firms selling Android-powered phones, such as Samsung and Xiaomi. Google has so far limited its focus to the high-end market. Nearly three-quarters of Pixel shipments occurred in the United States, Japan and UK, according to research firm IDC. Amid the generative AI boom, the company shifted the timing of its hardware event for the first time last year from its traditional autumn schedule to the summer, giving it a chance to preempt Apple in promoting AI integrations on smartphones. That has not yet translated to a material improvement in market share: for the second quarter, Google held 1.1% of the worldwide smartphone market, up from 0.9% one year ago, according to IDC. In the United States, Pixel's biggest market in terms of shipments, the share slid to 4.3% from 4.5% in that same time period, according to IDC. Google announced new versions of its smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 4, and its cheaper Pixel Buds 2a wireless earbuds, though it left the Pixel Buds Pro 2 pat besides announcing a new color and an upcoming software update with device-specific upgrades. Exclusive-Amazon looks to ditch homegrown software for Android in Fire tablet revamp, sources say

FILE PHOTO: A visitior stands near a logo of Amazon during the annual Retail Leadership Summit in Mumbai, India, February 27, 2025. REUTERS/Hemanshi Kamani/File Photo SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Amazon is plotting a big change to its Fire tablet lineup following years of escalating gripes from consumers and app developers over the company's homegrown operating system. As part of a project known internally as Kittyhawk, Amazon plans to release a higher-end tablet as soon as next year offering the Android operating system software for the first time, according to six people familiar with the matter. Since the Fire tablet's introduction in 2011, Amazon has used what is known as a 'forked' version of Android with custom modifications that make it work like a unique operating system. Amazon has long sought to undercut hardware rivals with inexpensive tablets and other devices that serve as a doorway to the firm's digital content, like e-books, videos and music. The devices have typically sold at or near manufacturing cost. But the focus on simplicity has held back sales, particularly among consumers who seek higher-performing devices. The multiyear project to switch to Android marks a philosophical change for the online retail giant, which has eschewed third-party operating systems and software in favor of its a result, Amazon has offered its own app store requiring developers to make separate versions of their apps for Fire tablets, limiting the store's variety. If Kittyhawk is successful, Fire tablets could be more desirable for consumers who crave compatibilitywith other Android devices, the people said. They cautioned that Kittyhawk could be delayed or cancelled over financial or other concerns. Amazon declined to comment, saying it does not respond to rumors or speculation. 'Consumers have always expressed a concern about not having access to the latest Android versions, not having access to some of their apps because Amazon used their own store,' said Jitesh Ubrani, a researcher at IT advisory firm IDC. 'It's meant more work for developers in this day and age of largely free apps or services.' Ubrani noted that Amazon has nonetheless sold many millions of the tablets. Amazon has forfeited profits on the devices themselves in favor of making money on selling their associated services, like streaming movie rentals. But such inexpensive devices typically come with compromises like lower screen quality or battery life compared with pricier options. Amazon is the world's fourth-largest tablet seller, with 8% of the market, just behind Lenovo's 8.2%, according to second-quarter IDC data. Apple and Samsung were the market leaders with 33.1% and 18.7%, respectively. PRICIER TABLET The first Amazon Android tablet, slated for next year, will be pricier than current models, the people said. One of them said Amazon had discussed a $400 price tag, nearly double the cost of its current higher-end $230 Fire Max 11 tablet. IPads, by comparison, range from $350 to $1,200. Reuters could not learn additional specifications for the planned Amazon tablet, such as screen size and speaker quality or memory capacity. Amazon historically has avoided using software or other products from third parties, preferring to develop the services in-house or, barring that, to acquire a competitor. The Fire Phone smartphone championed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and released in 2014 failed to win over buyers in part because of its reliance on Fire OS, as well as its high price tag. Amazon canceled the device and took a $170 million writedown. But the Seattle retailer has more recently shown a willingness to use rivals' services, particularly through its investment in startup Anthropic, whose Claude artificial intelligence software is the primary underpinning of Amazon's Alexa+ voice assistant and a chatbot used by employees known as Cedric. The new Fire tablet, the people said, will use the open-source version of Android, meaning it does not require direct coordination with Google and can be customized. Amazon is planning to roll out some lower-priced tablets with its Linux-based Vega operating system now in some Fire TV devices, some of the people said. The full slate of tablets will eventually be powered by a version of Android, the people said. The Fire project's internal code name of Kittyhawk seems to derive from the North Carolina town near where the Wright brothers conducted the first powered flight in 1903. But it is also the name of a failed flying car startup backed by Google co-founder Larry Page that burned through hundreds of millions in cash. Amazon declined to discuss the meaning behind its Kittyhawk project name. (Reporting by Greg Bensinger in San Francisco; Editing by Matthew Lewis)

Google and Australia's national newswire strike AI deal

SYDNEY: Australia's national newswire has agreed to provide content to Google's Gemini artificial intelligence to improve its responses, the two firms said. Financial details of the agreement, which was announced Tuesday, were not provided. The deal would help deliver real-time information to "enhance" responses in the Gemini app, said Nic Hopkins, Google's head of news partnerships for Australia and New Zealand. Australian Associated Press, which was established 90 years ago, said its journalism would ensure timeliness and accuracy in the information Google's products provide. "This is a strong endorsement of our reputation as a leading and trusted news media organisation," AAP chief executive Emma Cowdroy said. A growing number of deals between news media and generative AI makers have been struck recently as tech firms look to make their natural-language responses to users' questions more relevant. AFP news agency signed a deal with Mistral in mid-January allowing the startup's chatbot to draw on the news agency's articles to formulate responses.
