Sacramento County sees its first mosquito sample of season test positive for West Nile virus
Vector control officials announced Wednesday their first positive mosquito sample test for West Nile virus in the Sacramento area this season.
The positive sample came from the Gibson Ranch area near Elverta, according to the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector District.
Officials say the recent very warm weather is increasing mosquito activity.
"It's important for residents to take these findings seriously and do everything they can to protect themselves," said Gary Goodman, the vector control district manager in a statement.
Alameda and Santa Clara counties have also already reported West Nile virus activity this season, vector control officials say.
California saw a total of 131 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in 2024, officials say, with 12 deaths from the disease also reported.

Health officials in Boston say a traveler with a confirmed case of measles visited Boston from June 7 to June 8. Who may have been exposed to measles? "This case of measles highlights the importance of obtaining the MMR vaccine to protect ourselves and our community. The MMR vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles infection and also protects against mumps and rubella," said Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, commissioner of Public Health for the city of Boston. She said about 94% of children in the Boston area have been vaccinated. Ojikutu said the Boston Public Health Commission is notifying the public and leading contact tracing as well as working with locations the traveler visited, MassPort, and the CDC. "As we collect more information, we will notify the public and individuals directly," she said. Measles begins with flu-like symptoms and is followed by a red, blotchy rash. In people with darker skin, the rash may appear brown or dark purple, Ojikutu said. Symptoms may appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Bill Plaschke, thank you for your very informative column about Parkinson's disease and your boxing exercise program. I was diagnosed with Parkinson's about five years ago and joined Rock Steady boxing in Burbank six months ago. We do Tai Chi, dancing, speech, the gym machines and boxing. We also work on stretching and floor exercises. My family has noticed a difference in my gait and my endurance. I hope that everyone with Parkinson's will take heed and find an exercise program specific to their needs. I never had a right jab before, but I have a good one now.
