Mahanadi dispute should be resolved amicably: CM Mohan Charan Majhi
Chairing a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan on Wednesday to take stock of the situation, the chief minister pointed out that efforts to resolve the issue through the Central Water Commission (CWC) have been slow.
'A mutually agreeable solution could be reached through discussions between the two states with the support of the central government. The CWC could provide technical assistance in this regard,' he added.
The chief minister, who had taken up the issue with his Chhattisgarh counterpart Vishnu Deo Sai on two occasions, said an early resolution to the long-standing dispute will improve relations between the two states.
Majhi and Sai had previously discussed the issue on the sidelines of the All India Conference of the State Water Resources Ministers in Rajasthan in February and again on the occasion of World Water Day in Bhubaneswar in March this year. Both of them had emphasised the need for an amicable solution on the dispute.
The meeting was informed that official-level talks between the two states were underway to resolve the issue. Since the CWC intervention has not made much headway, the meeting felt the need for the active support of the central government for an early resolution.
The meeting was attended by Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, development commissioner and additional chief secretary of Water Resources department Anu Garg, principal secretary to the Chief Minister Saswata Mishra and senior officials and engineers of the Water Resources department.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday lashed out at those giving a 'political colour' to the arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, saying the matter is sub judice and the law will take its course. Nuns Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, along with an individual named Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested by the railway police at the Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh on July 25 following a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary who accused them of 'forcibly converting' three girls from Narayanpur and 'trafficking' them. The Chief Minister claimed the girls, who were promised nursing training and subsequent job placements, were 'handed over' at the railway station by a man from Narayanpur to the nuns, who were allegedly taking them to Agra. Mr. Sai said it is alleged that this was an attempt at 'human trafficking and religious conversion through inducement.' 'This is a serious matter concerning the safety of women. The investigation is currently ongoing. The case is sub judice and the law will take its course,' he told reporters here. The Chief Minister highlighted that Chhattisgarh is a peaceful State where people of all religions and communities live in harmony. 'It is extremely unfortunate that a sensitive issue related to the safety of our daughters from Bastar is being given a political colour,' he said.

Water from Thirumoorthy Dam reaches culmination point of 124-km PAP Canal, farmers in tail-end demand equitable distribution
Water released on July 27, 2025, from Thirumoorthy Dam into the 124-km Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) Main Canal in Palar River Basin, for irrigation in the fourth zone areas, has reached the tail-end in Kangeyam. The water release will benefit 94,068 acres of agricultural land in the fourth zone. The water release, according to officials, will be maintained with intervals over a five-month period till December 9. Water to the extent of 10,250 mcft (inclusive of evaporation) will be released during the period. The Water Resources Department (WRD) started off by releasing 250 cusecs, and will be gradually increasing the flow to 912 cusecs, the officials said. On Friday, the level at Thirumoorthy Dam stood at 53.87 feet, out of maximum of 60 feet. The storage was 1,481 mcft against the maximum capacity of 1,744 mcft. The inflow into the dam was 932 cusecs and the discharge 1,080 cusecs. On the same day last year, the level stood at 28.18 feet, and the storage was 597 mcft. Meanwhile, the PAP (Parambikulam Aliyar Project) Vellakoil Branch Canal Water Conservation Association on Friday sought departmental action against officials in the WRD found flouting PAP Act. A petition submitted by P. Velusamy, president of the association, to the Revenue Divisional Officer of Tiruppur South who oversees the Monitoring Committee of PAP, Superintending Engineer of PWD (WRO), Parambikulam Aliyar Basin Circle, Pollachi, and other senior officials drew their attention to the continued neglect of the areas irrigated by the Vellakovil Branch Canal, vis-a-vis the Pongalur sub-division, based on water release calculations at the Andipalayam Measurement Point. Though the PAP Act specifies equitable distribution, the water drawal in Pongalur sub-division was much higher when compared to the extent flowing into Kangayam sub-division. Water withdrawals in the sub-canals of Pongalur division are categorised as overdrawals, supplied to non-zone and non-ayacut areas, the petition, a copy of which was also submitted to the Chief Minister's Office, said. Drought-like conditions continues to prevail in Kangayam-Vellakovil area despite abundant water storage in Tiruppur Dam, Mr. Velusamy pointed out. Inaction on the part of the government authorities to rectify the situation would leave the association with the only option of taking legal recourse, he said.
