Working behind the scenes, creative collectives power fashion's boldest moments

For two days in April during the Salone del Mobile design fair in Milan, fashion brand Miu Miu hosted a book club.
It was quite an undertaking, one that involved only a small amount of actual reading.
Produced to the exacting taste of Miuccia Prada, the event, a cultural experience of sorts to promote the arts, involved the creation of a 96-page branding guide, which included a colour palette of six shades of orange, blue and ochre, as well as a custom logotype and its application across posters, banners, digital ads, menus, coasters, pencils, notebooks and more.
Guests sat on tasselled couches lit by table lamps. The dress code was Miu Miu, of course.
Executed with the help of two external agencies – 2x4, a New York design firm founded by Michael Rock, Susan Sellers and Georgie Stout in 1994, and Kennedy, a London experiential design agency founded by Jan Kennedy in 2000, the second annual Miu Miu Literary Club attracted more than 2,000 attendees, among them International Booker Prize winner Geetanjali Shree.
Both 2x4 and Kennedy have collaborated on all manner of 'activations', as events like this are known in marketing-speak, but after decades of operating independently, the firms are now under the same ownership, having recently sold majority stakes to a rapidly growing entity called the Independents.
In fact, they are two of 13 such small companies to be gobbled up in the past two years, joining a total of 19 agencies worldwide.

A unique collective
The Independents was founded in 2017 when Isabelle and Olivier Chouvet and a third partner, Alexandre Monteux, merged K2, their Shanghai event and production company, with Karla Otto, a veteran fashion and luxury public relations firm.
Together, their clients included Chanel, Cartier, Celine, Moncler, Valentino and Nike.
The Independents' original funding came from private equity firm Cathay Capital, which was bought out in 2023 with a new round of US$580mil (approximately RM2.5bil) funding led by a bank pool, TowerBrook Capital Partners, and Banijay, a strategic long-term investor that has the opportunity to increase its investment in 2026.
The Chouvets remain majority investors.
The couple, both French, made their mark in Asia with a string of entrepreneurial ventures, including Chinese flash sale site Mei.com, which Olivier Chouvet and his partners sold to Alibaba in 2015.
They set up K2 in 2002. Their first project was the introduction of Chanel's J12 watch in Japan.
By 2017, Isabelle Chouvet had developed a network that made her firm the go-to for luxury brands looking to do world-class activations – the public relations, branding, events, production and social media – in Japan, China and Korea.

'I only had the experience and capabilities in Asia, so I immediately looked for a partner in a different geographic location.'
Karla Otto, a German-born publicist who opened her agency in 1982 in Milan, had the connections Chouvet sought.
With Chouvet as CEO, the Independents group has gone on an ambitious acquisition spree.
Names like Bureau Betak, Prodject, Lucien Pages, Kitten and Sunshine may not mean much to the average civilian, but within the increasingly all-encompassing world of luxury, fashion and cultural branding, the agencies in the Independents portfolio are as blue chip as they come.
When Alessandro Michele wanted to turn his Autumn/Winter 2025 Paris fashion show for Valentino into a giant, blood-red David Lynchian public toilet, he hired Bureau Betak to stage the scene.
For the past 14 years, Anna Wintour has not planned a Met Gala without Prodject, the firm responsible for implementing her vision – whether 'Camp', 'Heavenly Bodies', 'Sleeping Beauties' or 'Superfine' – inside the museum.
When Dior set about staging a Villa Dior presentation in Dali, China, it worked with K2 to realise it.
The Independents now has 1,200 employees across offices in Barcelona, Spain; Beijing and Shanghai; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Hong Kong; Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; London; Los Angeles; Milan; Munich; New York; Paris; Seoul, South Korea; Singapore; and Tokyo.
The 2x4 agency and Terminal 9 Studios, a documentary film production company in Paris, are the most recent acquisitions.
It's obvious why Chouvet would want to bundle these firms under one roof. The Independents group reported US$800mil (RM3.4bil) in revenue for 2024.
She is far from the first to try to consolidate and capitalise on creative agencies.
Venture capital roll-ups, in which a group of investors buy a bunch of agencies, eliminate redundancies, install a central administrative staff to cut costs, and eventually take it public or sell to a megagroup like Publicis are common practice.
These deals come with pressure to deliver return on investment.
Many of the agencies that have signed on with the Independents have spent their careers avoiding this acquisition model.
'It might work for tech companies or other things, but it doesn't work for creative industries,' Rock said. 'Whatever made that company great in the beginning is completely lost.'
Yet Rock and his associates, whose clients include Prada, Chanel Arts and Culture, Nike, Instagram and Lincoln Center, signed over a majority stake to the Independents, which, from the outside, looks like a roll-up despite protests to the contrary.
Chouvet said there is no exit strategy at the moment, and she has no financial or growth obligations to her investors.
'It's working so well because all of the interests are aligned, and everyone feels they are stronger by being together,' Chouvet said.
'There remains independence. That's why our name is the Independents.'
The point of the group is to create a united network of partners who can work together, if they want to.
'By no means is it a forced march,' said Keith Baptista, a founder of Prodject. 'Nobody's telling me, 'You must work with this person'.'
Many of the agencies have already shared clients for years.
Bureau Betak does the design and production for Saint Laurent and Jacquemus fashion shows, and Lucien Pages does their PR.

Why consolidate?
So what is the point, and where's the catch?
If everyone was happily working together for decades on end with no shortage of business, why consolidate?
Otto and Alexandre de Betak used the sale to step back from the day-to-day of their agencies.
She essentially retired, and he is now focusing on an art and architecture business.
The practice of a principal exiting the business after a three-year earn-out period is common practice after a company is acquired.
The idea that Chouvet is hoovering up a bunch of companies whose success hinges on the singular vision of the founder, just when the founder is looking to retire, is not a negligible one.
'You get to a certain age and you think about those kinds of things,' Rock said.
'We weren't looking to cash out like an exit strategy. We still want to work.'
Why wouldn't he? A few weeks later, Rock was reached by phone to confirm the Pantone colours chosen for the Miu Miu Literary Club.
He was at the airport, flying back from a weeklong photo shoot for Chanel in southern France.
'I'm feeling very ragged,' Rock said. 'But we were at Coco Chanel's house on the Riviera, so it's kind of like... can't really complain.' – ©2025 The New York Times Company

Nintendo's Switch 2 soups up the graphics, but does it deliver the games?

WASHINGTON: I'm cruising around Bowser's Castle with my old pal Toad. It's not exactly relaxing, what with all the lava pits and banana peels and turtle shells littering the road. Add 23 other characters – is that a cow driving? – who are trying to get to the finish line first, and it's chaos. The hectic, high-speed insanity of any race in the new Mario Kart World would have caused the eight-year-old Switch console to wheeze a bit. And that's why we've got the Switch 2 (US$449.99/RM1,907), the souped-up sequel to Nintendo's popular home-and-portable hybrid. It looks prettier, too. The 7.9in portable display (up from 6.2in) boosts the resolution to 1020p (from 720p), and while the LCD screen isn't quite as sharp as an OLED screen might have been, it's much cleaner than the original recipe Switch. It looks even better when connected to an HDTV since it now supports 4K and HDR. Nintendo has always stood apart from the technological arms race that fans of Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox obsess over, insisting that first-rate games don't necessarily depend on high-powered computer chips. But you could feel the strain in 2023's The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom , with its at-times blurry graphics and sluggish framerate. The Switch 2, with a faster framerate of 120 fps, corrects much of the fuzziness. That's not to say it comes close to matching the high-definition performance of the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox X/S. If you're expecting the jaw-dropping graphics of, say, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows ... well, no. There is good news for those of us who have gotten weary of the old Switch's dinky 32 gigabytes of internal storage. The Switch 2 multiplies that by eight, for 256GB. Of course, flashier games take up more space, so if you want more room you'll have to invest in a microSD Express card – which is a bit pricier than the standard memory card used in most portable devices. Magnets, how do they work? The Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers have undergone some tinkering. As before, you can attach them to the sides of the screen if you're playing on the go. If you're at home, you can attach them to a doohickey that feels more like a traditional joystick. Either way, they're now more firmly connected with magnets, which provide a satisfying snap. Both the left and right Joy-Cons now include an optical mouse, which you can use by placing the controller on its edge and rolling it around on a table. (Nintendo says you can also use it on your pants, but I prefer using a clipboard on my lap.) It remains to be seen how many Switch 2 games will call for a mouse, but 2K's port of Sid Meier's Civilization VII seems like a good candidate. What about the social options? And then there's a new button labeled "C' on the right-hand Joy-Con. That calls up GameChat, which lets you start up a conversation with other players – provided you've all taken the time to register yourselves as friends. (Eventually, you'll also need to subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online service, but that requirement doesn't kick in until March 31, 2026.) The microphone is built into the Switch 2, though if you want to upgrade to video chat, you'll need to buy a separate Nintendo camera. Finally, there's GameShare, which lets you play selected titles with other Switch users even if they don't own the software. Nintendo has been emphasising the new social features in its marketing, though it feels like it's catching up to the competition. The kids I know who play Fortnite or Minecraft on competing consoles seem to have figured out long ago how to chat with their pals. Welcome to the 2010s? Who's got game? As with any console launch, the driving question is: Does it have the games? There are just a couple of Switch 2 exclusives out now: Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour , a US$10 (RM42) demo package that really should have been free. There are some new-to-Nintendo ports of excellent titles like Split Fiction and Cyberpunk 2077 . You can get upgrades of classics like the last two Legend Of Zelda adventures. And the Switch 2 is fully backward-compatible, so you can play everything that came out for the Switch as well as a substantial library of older titles. There's no other machine that will let you play future installments of beloved franchises like Zelda , Super Mario Bros , Super Smash Bros and Animal Crossing . None of those have been announced yet, but some marquee names – Donkey Kong and Kirby – will star in Switch 2 exclusives later this year. There's plenty of competition out there, though, and not just in the TV-connected console market Switch shares with the PlayStation and the Xbox. Nintendo no longer has the portable market to itself, thanks to Valve's SteamDeck. Some models of that device cost less than the Switch 2, and it already has a huge library of PC games. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced over the weekend that it's teaming up with Asus on the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld that will be out before Christmas. Honestly, we'll probably have a better idea of the Switch's quality a few years down the line, after developers get a handle on what the new hardware can do. If you're dying to get back behind the wheel with Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach right now, though, you know what you need to do. – AP

Baldoni's lawyer Bryan Freedman, speaking with TMZ Tuesday, slammed the Gossip Girl star's 'false' victory lap and said he fully intends to forge ahead with an amended complaint by month's end. 'We march forward with the same confidence that we had when Ms Lively and her cohorts initiated this battle and look forward to her forthcoming deposition, which I will be taking,' said Freedman. In December, the Gossip Girl star, 37, filed a civil rights complaint and lawsuit accusing her It Ends With Us director and co-star, 41, of sexual harassment while filming the domestic violence drama. and spearheading a smear campaign against her after. Those claims went viral after The New York Times ' expose, We Can Bury Anyone . Baldoni filed a US$250mil libel lawsuit against the publication and, in January, filed a US$400mil suit against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds and publicist Leslie Sloane for alleged defamation and civil extortion. Liman on Monday tossed both of Baldoni's suits, adding that Baldoni has until June 23 to amend the claims for breach of implied covenant and tortious interference with contact. 'While the Court dismissed the defamation related claims, the Court has invited us to amend four out of the seven claims against Ms Lively, which will showcase additional evidence and refined allegations,' said Freedman. SOUTH Korea's Yeoncheon county, just kilometres from the heavily fortified border with the nuclear-armed North, is best known for its honey. But on Wednesday, it was flooded with K-pop supergroup BTS fans. Despite pleas from the band's agency HYBE to stay away from the area where members Jimin and Jungkook were being released from mandatory military service, a screaming, weeping frenzy ensued early Wednesday. Decked out in the band's signature purple, and some even sporting BTS tattoos, fans began gathering at 3am. Some had flown in from Brazil and Indonesia, eager to catch the first glimpse of the pair after their discharge. As the two BTS stars emerged, fans screamed, cried and hugged each other. Wu Ruohan, an 18-year-old Chinese fan, said this was her "dream come true." Their release means that six of the seven members of BTS have now finished their service. The final member – SUGA – is due out on June 21, bringing the group one step closer to reunion and new music. Security moved the cordons to keep fans at bay as Jimin and Jungkook arrived, dressed in camouflage military uniforms, AFP journalists saw. The K-pop idols, who have spent 18 months on the frontline with North Korea serving in the 5th Infantry Division Artillery Brigade, thanked the crowd for waiting for them. "It's been a while since I've been in front of a camera, and I'm a bit embarrassed because I didn't even put on makeup," said Jungkook, who looked slightly flustered at the mass gathering. Jimin confessed they had gone for a 5am jog, hoping to look their best. The pair bowed to fans and media before getting into a black minivan and driving off, promising to speak on their superfan platform WeVerse later. Online, fans bickered about whether it was right to turn up at the bases, against requests from HYBE and BTS. Before they enlisted, the BTS members had knelt during a live broadcast to earnestly entreat their fans not to show up at army bases as they entered military life. "They're not real fans, the boys even knelt and begged for them to not come," one social media user wrote, sharing screenshots of those at the scene, in a seeming effort to shame them. Experts have said the members will likely have a "visual adjustment period" of a few months, while they grow out their military buzz cuts and hone their K-pop look. Even so, fashion enthusiasts were looking for any scraps of personality amid their military attire, seizing on the watch worn by member V who was discharged Tuesday. His Cartier piece was estimated to be worth around 20 million won (US$14,649). In contrast, his bandmate RM wore an affordable Casio. But to the disappointment of online sleuths, neither Jimin nor Jungkook wore a watch on Wednesday. On Friday, the seven-member group celebrates the 12th anniversary of its debut, known as FESTA. Fans from around the world are pouring into South Korea for the occasion. On Wednesday, thousands of people were seen outside HYBE's headquarters in downtown Seoul waiting for vans carrying the stars to arrive. While waiting to see their idols, fans sang along to BTS songs and chanted 'Jimin, Jungkook,' as multiple local broadcasters aired the scene live. Local media were seemingly taken aback by the huge interest in the releases and called the reunion a "revival of the K-pop industry."
