Paul Skenes dominated again without getting a win. This time, the Pirates ace didn't mind
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes is in a routine.
Pitch deep into a game. Allow a single run, if that. Walk away without a win.
That didn't change Sunday. The 23-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates ace worked 7 2/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies, giving up one unearned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He was pulled with the game tied 1-all.
Skenes remained 4-6 in his sophomore season despite lowering his ERA to 1.88, second-best in the National League behind the New York Mets' Kodai Senga (1.59).
This time, he didn't mind the no-decision. Pittsburgh won 2-1, completing a three-game sweep and handing Philadelphia its fifth straight loss.
'I think we've been playing pretty good ball for a little bit now and either haven't come out with (wins) or lost by a run or something like that in a few games,' Skenes said. 'I've been happy with the baseball we've been playing. It's nice to finally get some wins out of it, too. It's easy to go on a losing streak, too, so we've just got to keep going.'
Skenes threw 97 pitches (62 strikes). He got through the first two batters of the eighth on four pitches before manager Don Kelly signaled for rookie right-hander Braxton Ashcraft, who entered as fans' booing over the decision subsided.
'We felt like (Skenes) was done,' Kelly said. 'He emptied the tank there that inning. Just felt like it was an opportunity to go to Ashcraft in that moment.
'Unbelievable. What can you say? Just continued to fill up the strike zone, elite stuff. At the beginning, really sharp. Kind of in the middle, looked like it got it away from him. That's just what he's shown, that he's able to dial it back in and just dominate the strike zone. He was unbelievable again today.'
Ashcraft picked up his first win in the majors after Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead, broken-bat single in the eighth.
The 25-year-old started with a walk of Brandon Marsh but recovered by getting Rafael Marchan to ground out to second. Returning for the ninth, he forced Alec Bohm into a game-ending double play as rain began to pour.
'It means a lot after somebody puts up a really good outing,' Ashcraft said. '(Skenes) has done that consistently this year. It means a lot to us, as a team, to be able to go out and get him that win. He didn't get the win. I got the win. But, I mean, he got it just as much as I did.'
It was nothing out of the ordinary. Skenes gave up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings against the Houston Astros on Tuesday in his previous outing, but the Pirates lost 3-0.
Skenes is 1-4 in his past eight starts, even though he's given up just five runs in 42 1/3 innings over his last six. Pittsburgh has averaged 3.35 runs in his 14 starts and he is 0-2 in three games where he's gone into the eighth, despite allowing three runs total (two earned).
Cristopher Sanchez nearly matched Skenes on Sunday, giving up two runs and striking out nine in seven innings.
Dueling with another starter is fine with Skenes, but he doesn't mind the alternative.
'It's fun,' Skenes said. 'Pitching in 10-0 games is fun, too.'

Aaron Rodgers has yet to take a snap in a game in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform, but the veteran quarterback is already setting the tone. You gotta protect them." Rodgers suggested he realized his message resonated with the offensive line after he watched another situation unfold several days later. "The next time something happened about a week later, Zach [Frazier] was in there. Pat [Freiermuth] was in there," Rodgers said. "If Zach's in there, you know Mason [McCormick's] in there. And then I saw Troy [Fautanu] going in there. And then Spencer [Anderson]. I was like, 'That's what it looks like.' And I'm not talking about instigating fights. I'm just talking about backing your brothers up." On Monday, Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones offered details about what he's experienced having Rodgers as a teammate. "It's a love/hate relationship at the same time. Because sometimes he's playing, but not everybody's on the same page," he explained. Jones also acknowledged the vast NFL experience Rodgers brings and praised the four-time league MVP for having "a good sense of who he is." "But it's also good to have that bond within to have the understanding, 'OK, he's a vet. I know everything, let me make sure everybody else is good and then we carry on with whatever is going on, whatever the situation was.' Just things like that. But I feel like he has a good sense of who he is and who we're trying to be and getting us where we're trying to go." he Steelers play their final preseason game of the year on Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers. Rodgers and the Steelers will open their regular season on Sept. 7 against his former team, the New York Jets.

Colts planning to keep top 2 QBs on the bench for preseason finale
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen said Thursday he does not intend to play either of his top two quarterbacks, Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson, in Saturday's preseason finale at Cincinnati. Steichen also does not intend to play many starters. The announcement comes two days after Steichen said Jones will be the starting quarterback for Indy's Sept. 7 season opener against the Miami Dolphins. 'I think he's one play away from going into an actual game and don't want to take the risk there in that situation,' Steichen said when asked about Richardson. 'We've got a lot of our threes and fours playing in this game.' NFL coaches generally don't play starters in the final preseason game, which is why Jones will sit out. Richardson also has been susceptible to injuries, starting only 15 of 34 games in his first two NFL seasons after being selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft. He also was benched for two games last season after pulling himself out of a game because he was tired. Steichen also announced four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard will not play Saturday. Indy signed Howard on Monday. Howard did not play in the league last season, but worked with Indy's new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo his first two seasons with the Dolphins. ___

Boilermakers end quarterback competition by naming Ryan Brown the starter for next week's opener
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue coach Barry Odom ended the suspense Thursday, naming Ryan Browne his starting quarterback for the Aug. 31 season opener against Ball State. Browne is the only quarterback on the depth chart who was with Purdue last season, but he also had the shortest amount of time to learn Odom's playbook. Browne transferred to North Carolina in the spring before changing his mind and returning to Purdue. Browne battled three transfers — Evans Chuba, Malachi Singleton and Bennett Meredith. Chuba played previously at Washington State, Singleton competed at Arkansas and Meredith attended Arizona State. But Browne emerged as the winner. 'Ryan will be the starter and now the job for everybody else around the quarterback, is to play at a high level to make it easier on the quarterback,' the first-year coach said. 'You've got to be able to catch, you've got to be able to protect, we've got to be great in our play calls and we're excited about where the offense is headed.' Browne has appeared in nine games over his first two seasons at Purdue, making eight appearances last season when he also started the first two games of his career. He's completed 55 of 92 passes for a completion percentage of 59.8% with 636 yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions. He also has 71 carries for 240 yards. Purdue won its opener last season then lost its final 11 games, and next week will try to break the second-longest losing streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kent State has lost 21 in a row. But the biggest factor in choosing Browne was consistency. 'He did a great job and got a lot better,' offensive coordinator Josh Henson said. 'The guy's intangibles are phenomenal, especially only being a part of the team for three or four months and the relationship he's developed with the team. He's vocal about it, he's intense about it and, to me, that's one of the best parts about him and who he is as a leader.'
