Elina Aarnisalo's late free throws deliver UCLA a win at Iowa
Lauren Betts finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Kiki Rice added 12 points for the Bruins (26-1, 14-1 Big Ten), who trailed by 12 points twice in the third quarter.
Iowa tied the score at 65 when Lucy Olsen made three free throws with six seconds left. Aarnisalo was fouled when she was tripped by Olsen after she had fallen to the court while trying to defend.
Iowa had a final shot to tie or win, but Addison O'Grady's three-pointer fell short.
Olsen led Iowa (18-9, 8-8) with 17 points, althoug she made only five of 21 shots. Hannah Stuelke had 11 points, while O'Grady and Taylor McCabe each had 10.
The Hawkeyes were hoping to knock off another top-5 team at home — they defeated No. 4 USC 76-69 on Feb. 2.
The Bruins survived early foul trouble to Betts — she picked up her second with 4:26 left in the second quarter and sat out the rest of the half.
UCLA went on a 16-4 run over the final 5½ minutes of the third quarter to tie the score at 50. The run was started by a three-pointer from Angela Dugalic, only the second three of the game for the Bruins at that point.
UCLA shot just five of 25 on three-pointers, but the last make came from Rice, whose long-range shot with 2:19 left gave UCLA a 62-60 lead. The Bruins wouldn't trail again.
UCLA is at Wisconsin on Wednesday; Iowa plays at Michigan on Wednesday.

Indiana football field adding sponsor. Why it matters in college sports money race
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana Athletics is entering into an eight-figure on-field commercial sponsorship agreement with Merchants Bank of Indiana that will see the Memorial Stadium field named for the bank. Effective immediately, the playing surface inside Memorial Stadium has been renamed Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium. IndyStar understands Merchants Bank will pay Indiana $50 million over 20 years as part of the agreement. Exact terms, including the structure of payment across the life of that agreement, were not immediately available. As part of the partnership, Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium will be prominently displayed on the Memorial Stadium field beginning with IU's 2025 home opener Aug. 30 against Old Dominion. The agreement is a first for Indiana, and it reflects the NCAA's shifting position on schools exploring unconventional revenue streams in an era of athlete compensation. With revenue-sharing budgets opening at $20.5 million this academic year — and expected to increase annually for the foreseeable future — the association in 2024 approved rules changes allowing on-field commercial sponsorships. Such opportunities had already begun to open, like Washington's 10-year, $41 million field-naming rights deal with Alaska Airlines. Now, schools are allowed to sell not just naming rights, but also visible on-field commercial partnerships as well. Penn State earlier this year secured a $50 million field-naming rights deal with a home remodeling company in Pennsylvania, in another Big Ten-specific example. Even provided record revenues from the Big Ten's ongoing media rights deal, IU has nonetheless been buffeted by the expanding financial impact of player compensation, whether via direct revenue sharing or in the push to direct booster money to NIL collectives' efforts. Last year, IU Athletics endured a round of layoffs that saw 25 positions eliminated, and 13 employees let go. Athletic director Scott Dolson has been aggressive in recent years in streamlining his department's financial situation, to better absorb the increasing amount of money being distributed in some form back to athletes. 'We've been anticipating this for a while,' Dolson told IndyStar in a June 2024 interview. 'Coming out of COVID, because we had a similar exercise in terms of trying to scrub our budgets, scrub our resources, it's not like this is brand new for us.' The expansion of on-field commercial opportunities was among the most prominent ways in which the NCAA has attempted to widen revenue streams for its member institutions as a result. IU spent a year exploring potential opportunities, before settling on this partnership with Merchants Bank. It is not the first high-profile investment by the bank in IU Athletics, albeit the most meaningful in this form. Merchants Bank has since the inception of NIL compensation four years ago consistently signed IU men's basketball players as brand ambassadors. Past such partners with the bank — which is headquartered in Carmel — include, among others, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Race Thompson, Trey Galloway and Malik Reneau. And, it should be said, revenues from such arrangements can be repurposed for uses beyond just athlete compensation. Indiana is at the moment, for example, attempting to raise funds for a substantial renovation of Memorial Stadium, including significant investment in infrastructure, suite seating and press box areas. With more booster dollars pushed toward athletes in modern college athletics, commercial partnerships like this one can backfill holes left elsewhere.

New-look UCLA aims for turnaround with transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava
LOS ANGELES — DeShaun Foster got busy overhauling most of his coaching staff after his first season at UCLA. He upgraded the roster, making a splash in the transfer portal by landing quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava left Tennessee before the spring game to return home to Los Angeles, where he'll try to take the Bruins to heights they haven't been in years. UCLA was 5-7 overall and 3-6 in its debut season in the Big Ten Conference under Foster. The Bruins' last double-digit win season was in 2014 and they've made just three bowl appearances since 2017, losing twice. Iamaleava is among 55 new players in Westwood, along with eight new assistants. He didn't participate in spring camp, so how quickly the Bruins come together will be something to watch. 'I love how humble he is,' Foster said. 'He's open to learning anything and he hasn't big-timed anybody in our program. He's always in there acting like one of the regular guys, like he's been here the whole time.' Nico and Tino Tino Sunseri replaces offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who was fired after one season. Sunseri helped Indiana average 41.3 points — second-best in the nation — and reach the College Football Playoff last year. Sunseri, 36, played quarterback at Pitt and went on to the Canadian Football League before starting his coaching career with stops including Florida State and Alabama. 'I just love Tino's energy,' Foster said. 'He's played quarterback at a high level and he just holds them accountable.' Sunseri and Iamaleava hit it off early on. 'The thing about Nico is he's a self-driven person. He has a certain standard of how he wants to operate each day,' Sunseri said. 'There's not one day that he hasn't come in here that he's not focused on being able to become the best player he can be for UCLA.' Sunseri is working with a retooled offensive line that includes Kentucky transfer Courtland Ford and Florida State transfer Julian Armella. Iamaleava's younger brother, Madden, is a quarterback, too. He originally committed to the Bruins and then bailed on signing day to join Arkansas. He spent half the spring with the Razorbacks before also coming home. Defense Over half the projected starting lineup on defense is made up of transfers, including linebackers Isaiah Chisom from Oregon State and Ben Perry from Louisville. The Bruins ranked 39th in the country with 340.8 yards per game allowed last season. The lone returning starter is defensive tackle Siale Taupaki, who made seven starts. 'With this much turnover, we have to find ways to get this team to jell,' Foster said. 'You're going to see growth in my team.' The schedule The Bruins open with former Pac-12 Conference rival Utah on Aug. 30 at the Rose Bowl, followed by a trip to UNLV in Allegiant Stadium and a home game against New Mexico on Sept. 13. The schedule gets tough with a visit by national title contender No. 2 Penn State on Oct. 4 and road games at No. 20 Indiana on Oct. 25 and No. 3 Ohio State on Nov. 15. The Bruins close the regular season with a visit to crosstown rival USC on Nov. 29.
