Pune: USA resident Anish Agarwal's mother, father and brother were to travel from Toronto to Pune via Delhi on an Air India flight (AI-190) on Friday. The carrier suddenly changed their travel dates.

"Now, my brother will travel on Friday, father on June 28 (Sunday) and my mother on June 30 (Monday). I tried calling up the airline's customer support number from the USA, but in vain. I was put on hold for four hours, after which the call got disconnected. I got no solution. This has led to us booking hotel rooms for three additional nights in Toronto," Agarwal told TOI.
Four members of a Pune-based family, set to fly from Mumbai to Newark on another Air India flight (AI-191) on Friday, faced a similar situation.
Santosh Gupta, the owner of Shree Vinayak Holidays, said their flight was suddenly cancelled on Thursday.
"Upon enquiry, we learnt that one of them (mother of the family) will travel on the same flight on Friday, which the airline had earlier said was cancelled. The other three would be travelling to Newark via Delhi on June 29 (Sunday). We had booked the tickets for them in January," Gupta said.
An official statement from the airline regarding these issues was awaited till going to press.
A source in the airline said the reduction of the fleet size in the international sector was among the reasons behind these problems. "In some cases, different PNRs might have led to the different travel dates of members of the same family. We are providing all possible help to affected flyers," the airline source said.
Many international travellers have faced hassles after Air India temporarily curtailed its international services by 15% to maintain operational stability and enhance passengers' safety.

In addition to its international fleet, the airline has cut down on its domestic routes as well.
A flyer, who recently flew to Singapore on Air India, said, "I was slated to fly on June 23. Around 12 hours before the flight, I got the information that it was suspended. The alternative offered to me delayed my travel by more than eight hours. I wasn't offered any compensation or hotel accommodation for the same."
Vinit Shah, another flyer, wrote on X on June 23, "The airline (Air India) has offered only one option: fly Pune-Delhi-Singapore with a five-hour layover. Also, there is no date flexibility. My elderly mother cannot manage this halt."
Ravindra Zawar, another passenger, wrote last week, "Flight number AI146 from London (Gatwick) to Goa on June 28 has been changed to Heathrow to Mumbai with a 10-hour layover in Mumbai, and then to Goa."

Two Air India flights grounded on Sunday due to technical and maintenance issues

NEW DELHI: Flyers faced a tough time on Sunday during the long weekend as two Air India flights aborted take-off — one due to a technical glitch detected by pilots and the other due to a maintenance issue. The affected services were Delhi–Leh and Mumbai–Ahmedabad. Passengers eventually flew on alternate aircraft after delays of four and six hours, respectively. Flight AI 2479 from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport to Leh, scheduled for 4:55 am with over 100 passengers on an A320 Neo, was first affected. Passengers said the aircraft reached the runway when the captain announced a technical fault, forcing cancellation. The passengers were later shifted to another plane, which departed at 8:05 am. One passenger, speaking on condition of anonymity, recounted the ordeal: 'We were first told to rush from Gate 30 to Gate 36. After boarding, the aircraft reached the runway but stood there for five minutes before the captain announced the cancellation. We were made to alight and return to the terminal. At 6 am, while still inside the plane, we received a mail that our flight was rescheduled to 7:30 am.' 'After alighting, we had to go through security checks again. Food coupons were given at 6:40 am, but by 7 am we had to be back at the boarding gate. Many skipped breakfast or left it midway to rush. Boarding began at 7:20 am and the flight finally took off at 8:05 am,' the passenger added. The second flight, AI 613 from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, scheduled for 5:30 am, was also cancelled moments before take-off due to maintenance issues. According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, the service eventually departed at 11:21 am. Air India said in a statement: 'Flight AI 2479 returned to bay shortly after pushback due to a suspected technical issue and Flight AI 613 returned to bay shortly after pushback due to a suspected maintenance issue. Subsequently, all passengers were disembarked, and an alternative aircraft was deployed to operate the flight. We regret the inconvenience caused to the affected passengers due to this unforeseen situation.'

Snag in Air India's Delhi-bound flight from Kochi; MP flags safety concerns

Air India's flight AI 504 from Kochi to New Delhi suffered a delay of over an hour on Sunday night (August 17) due to a technical snag. The scheduled take-off of the flight at 10.34 p.m. was aborted due to this. The matter came to light after Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden posted on social media that the aircraft in which he was travelling with family seemed to have skidded off the runway while attempting to take off. 'Something unusual with this flight AI 504... it just felt like the flight skidded on the runway... and hasn't taken off yet,' he posted on Facebook. Mr. Eden told The Hindu that a sudden brake was applied just as the flight gathered substantial speed to take off. 'After an hour, the captain said that it would take off in 20 minutes. Passengers are still inside the flight, and its doors are kept open,' Mr. Eden said. Meanwhile, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) said in a statement that the delay in take-off was purely due to a technical issue, and that the flight would depart soon from the airport. 'A technical issue caused an Air India flight bound to Delhi to abort the take-off. AI is rectifying it and informed CIAL that they are changing the aircraft. The expected new time of departure is 0100 hrs,' said CIAL in its statement.

Heavy rains that continued overnight also triggered landslides in Changda village of Kathua and Dilwan-Hutli in Lakhanpur but no major damage was reported from the area. The rains submerged several low-lying areas in the district and the railway line passing through Kathua was also shut. This fresh string of cloudbursts and landslides in Kathua came a few days after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Chisoti village in Kishtwar district on August 14, at least 60 people dead, more than 100 injured and several people missing. In Kathua, the roads leading to the affected villages were damaged and washed away in some places, and all the rivers and canals in the area were flowing above the danger mark on Sunday. The officials of the district administration as well as disaster management teams had to walk several kilometres to reach the affected villages. "Continous rains triggered landslides and all the houses in these areas were buried under the debris of mud, sand and stone from the nearby hill. Seven persons were killed and 11 others injured in two villages. We have performed the last rites of all the people killed and our teams are working on the restoration plan," deputy commissioner of Kathua Rajesh Sharma told ET. Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to lieutenant governor of J&K Manoj Sinha and chief minister Omar Abdullah on the cloudburst in Kathua and assured all support from the central government. Abdullah announced ex-gratia assistance to the deceased from the CM's relief fund. Rescue Ops Continue in Chisoti Meanwhile, the rescue operation in Kishtwar continued for the fourth day on Sunday, even as the death toll continued to increase and several people remained missing. "Our rescue and rehabilitation operations continue. Death toll has reached 61 and several injured people have been sent home after treatment," deputy commissioner of Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar told ET. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said that it had intensified rescue and relief efforts in Chisoti village and that the Army's engineer bridging teams along with equipment had started construction of a bridge at the site of Chisoti Nala.
