Georgian Bay Steam Show roars into its 60th year
Tractor pulls will be the main event Sunday night with lots to do during the day.
'it's a combination of antique power with the agricultural twist to it, with the farming equipment,' said James Few, president of the Georgian Bay Steam Show.
He added there is plenty for children to come and see as well including face painting.
'We have heavy horse pulls, garden tractor pulls, we have, talent contest, vendors, everything you could ever want to see,' said Few.
Stationary steam engines are back on the grounds after 20 years.
'Most of these steam engines here were built in Canada, and we'll run different implements back in the early turn of the century,' said Few.
Andrew Webb grew up in Cookstown and owns a 1918, 25 horsepower Waterloo Steam Traction Engine, he said the machine is also a favourite at steam shows across the province.

'It was built by the Waterloo Manufacturing Company in Waterloo Ontario, and it was originally sold in Portage Prairie, Manitoba as a plowing engine out there,' said Webb. 'And it came back to Ontario in 1932 and did all kinds of various jobs around the province.'
He credits the Georgian Steam Show for his passion in the industry.
'if it wasn't for this show when I was probably 13 or 14, I probably wouldn't be into the hobby as deep as I am today,' said Webb.
With Few adding its important to remember the agriculture history.
'This is where everything started and this is where we built, this is where this we became a country because we could expand the land and be able to farm it and bring it up and move it and advance ourselves as a society,' said Few. 'And that's why this is important, to go back to our heritage.'

First Valley Line West Light Rail Vehicle arrives in Edmonton
The Valley Line West's newest Light Rail Vehicle is seen arriving at the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton. (Supplied) With construction on the Valley Line West LRT well underway, the city has welcomed the first Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) that will run on the line when it opens sometime after construction is expected to wrap up in 2028. A news release from the city said the LRV was shipped in two sections from Hyundai Rotem Company's facility in Changwon, South Korea, on a roll-on/roll-off ship designed to carry wheeled vehicles. The ship crossed the Pacific Ocean and arrived at the Port of Tacoma, Wash., on July 20 before being transported by truck to the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton. (Supplied) 'The arrival of the first LRV is more than just a milestone; it's a sign of momentum for the Valley Line West. Watching this train roll into Edmonton is a proud moment for our team and for the city,' said Brian Latte, director of the Valley Line West with the City of Edmonton. 'This LRV is a part of where we're headed as a city. As Edmonton grows towards two million people, Valley Line West will change how we move, how we build, and how we connect with one another.' There are currently 16 LRVs at various stages of manufacturing in South Korea. Hyundai Rotem will be supplying the city with a total of 46 Valley Line West LRVs which will complement the current fleet of 26 LRVs operating on the Valley Line Southeast. The two sets of LRVs are designed to be fully compatible with the 27-kilometre line. 'We're proud to see the first LRV arrive safely in Edmonton. From initial design, to manufacturing and testing in Korea, to final delivery, this vehicle represents years of collaboration and a shared commitment to delivering a high-quality transit vehicle,' said Chiseung Kim, project manager of the Valley Line West with Hyundai Rotem Company. Edmontonians participated in user testing, interacting with a full-scale mock-up of the LRV in 2023 which shaped the final design. The vehicles will undergo testing and commissioning on the Valley Line Southeast tracks at a later time with measures in place to ensure existing passenger service is not impacted.

Fire truck driver charged, licence suspended after Ontario crash
Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash in Laurier Township involving a fire truck on July 28, 2025. (Ontario Provincial Police/Facebook) Ontario Provincial Police say a 52-year-old resident of South River, Ont., located about 60 kilometers south of North Bay, has been charged after a fire truck was involved in a single-vehicle crash last week. The collision occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on July 28 on Goreville Road in Laurier Township. Police confirmed the driver was charged with careless driving and operating a commercial motor vehicle without an airbrake endorsement. 'The driver was also issued a three-day warn range administrative suspension,' the OPP said in a social media post Wednesday. Police have not released additional details about the circumstances of the collision or indicated that alcohol was a factor in the crash. Under Ontario law, a 'warn range' suspension applies when a driver's blood alcohol concentration is between 0.05 and 0.08. Commercial vehicle operators are required to hold proper endorsements for specialized equipment, such as airbrakes, in Ontario. Authorities said no injuries were reported as a result of the incident and the vehicle has since been removed from the scene.
