Peoria Juneteenth Fest: Free health services & community fun
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The YANI Collective celebrates Juneteenth with a day full of festivities including the Ernestine Jackson Freedom Day parade, music, horses, runway modeling, and money, on June 14, and beyond.
Lexii Loushel, and Mary Moore of the YANI Collective stopped by WMBD This Morning to talk about it.
The theme of this year's Juneteenth festival is 'Peoria Black Wallstreet.' Loushel explained that when these specially marked 'YANI Bucks' get used at participating businesses, they will keep circulating throughout the community.
'It's not just a festival, it's going to extend beyond and teach our community how to continue to work together and make money,' she said.
The festival also includes a health and wellness fair, which includes free school physicals, and STD testing.
The Juneteenth festival is not all health and economy, there is ample fun in store as well, such as an alumni basketball game, and dodgeball, and there will be plenty of music which will help with the line dancing and the Rip the Runway modeling show. There will also be horseback riding, bouncy houses and plenty of food vendors on site.
The event also includes the third annual Miss Juneteenth Pageant, with new additions including Miss Teen Juneteenth, Mister Juneteenth, and Little Miss Juneteenth categories.
There are many more family fun activities all stuffed into one memorable day, June 14, at John Gwynn Park, 809 W. John H. Gwynn Jr Ave. in Peoria.

Brooklyn restaurant crawl kicks off Juneteenth celebrations with flavor and purpose
A savory blend of cheeses, creamy macaroni, and a fall-off-the-bone serving of oxtail makes up Brooklyn Beso's signature oxtail mac and cheese. The dish has been drawing food lovers to the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant. "It is the right amount of cheese, the right amount of pasta. And then the oxtail, which is one of my favorite, is also very good. It's seasoned well," said Kaltmann Edwards, who traveled from Queens to enjoy the dish. The indulgent meal is just one of many offerings featured during a weeklong Juneteenth restaurant crawl celebrating Black-owned businesses across Brooklyn. "It was good, cheesy, nice and hot," said Fatou Sylla, another diner. "People go crazy over it. This is what we're really known for," said Donna Drakes, owner of Brooklyn Beso. Drakes, a native of St. Lucia, has operated her Latin-Caribbean fusion restaurant in Bed-Stuy for 15 years. She said she opened the restaurant to bring something new to a neighborhood rooted in Black culture. This week, she joins several local eateries taking part in a food crawl, which spotlights Black entrepreneurs and their culinary creativity. "I think it's more inspiring to little girls who want to start their own business no matter what avenue it is," Edwards added. "It's so important to celebrate that day" For Drakes, the event is about more than good food. It's about honoring the significance of Juneteenth. "It's a form of liberation," she said. "It's so important to celebrate that day. Everyone fought for it. Our ancestors fought for it." The restaurant crawl began Thursday and runs through June 19. It inviting locals and visitors alike to explore Brooklyn's rich food scene while supporting Black-owned establishments. "The winter was pretty rough. A lot of restaurants folded. And it is so important to keep Black-owned businesses alive, especially our culture, our foods," Drakes said. Back in the kitchen, orders of shrimp pasta were flying out, and margaritas were being poured at a steady clip. Diners packed the space, sampling the soulful menu that has been shaped by years of resilience and passion. "It's really important, especially for Black-owned businesses, to get the recognition that they do deserve, especially the local ones that have been here for 15 years and people might not have known about them," said uest Raysa Chouwdhury. "Food always makes people happy. It's for the soul. So if you can, you know, get to someone's soul, it's important. It's a way to bring people together," Drakes said. 21-year-old local filmmaker to debut feature film this weekend
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A 21-year-old local filmmaker will be debuting his first feature film this weekend. 'Pastime' will premiere at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Theatre this Saturday, June 14. The film is described as a romantic comedy and character study film meant for all ages to enjoy. LIST: Pride Month events in the Miami Valley 'The synopsis of the story encompasses an enduring summer romance that lasts for a while and fell apart,' said Corinthian Campbell, 'Pastime' writer and director. 'The main character is battling with the concept of what is love, is it a pastime, passion to some people? What is it?' Campbell worked to include several Dayton area locations to make his work more attractive to locals, as well as help promote the film culture in the Miami Valley. Saturday's event is more than just watching the film, it's the World Premiere Red Carpet Screening. 'It is kind of a red carpet event for cast and crew,' said Johnny Catalano, associate producer on the film. 'It's absolutely open to the public. Boulder to celebrate Juneteenth on Monday
DENVER (KDVR) — The City of Boulder will hold a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate Juneteenth on Monday, June 16, at the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building at 3 p.m. The city's Juneteenth event will also include live entertainment from reggae, world and African music group Selasee & The FaFa Family, free ice cream and remarks from local leaders, including representatives from the city and Boulder City Council, among others. Zach Bryan announces unplanned show at Red Rocks with $50 tickets Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, the day Union soldiers freed the final enslaved people from Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. 'Juneteenth offers an important opportunity for our community to come together in reflection of our shared history,' said Equity and Belonging Officer Aimee Kane, in a statement. 'The city is honored to participate in the events that pay tribute to and celebrate the countless contributions of Black people to our country and community.' Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. The city said its three recreation centers will be open for their normal operating hours on June 19, while Open Space and Mountain Park trails will be open. All Age Well Centers will be closed. Ball Arena owner buys River Mile development area including Meow Wolf, Elitch Gardens Parking will be free on city streets on the holiday in all city-owned lots and downtown garages, with paid parking in effect at/near Chautauqua Park. The free Park-to-Park shuttle to Chautauqua will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The city said Juneteenth celebrations will take place from June 16-19.
