How to Watch the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' Movies in Order

Cosmopolitan20-07-2025
In 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer was released and became a teen horror classic. The movie stars four actors who were huge teen idols of the time: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe. It was a box office success, gained a passionate following, and kicked off a franchise that continues on today with a new movie debuting on July 18.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer follows a similar premise to the original: a group of friends believe that they have accidentally killed someone and end up being sent spooky messages while a disguised killer hunts them down. Hewitt and Prinze reprise their roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson, survivors of the "Fisherman" killer.
If you want a refresher on the whole franchise, here's how you can watch everything I Know What You Did Last Summer — including the TV series and the third movie that went straight to video. (It's not so much of a big deal now for something to go straight to streaming, but at the time, straight-to-video was a bad sign.)
In the original movie, a group of four friends accidentally hit a man with a car during the summer before they head off to college. They decide to keep the incident a secret, and one year later begin receiving messages from someone who claims to know what they did. Soon, a killer known as "the Fisherman" starts coming after the group as they try to figure out the mystery surrounding the death.

A year after the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer, the aptly titled sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, hit theaters. It's set one year after the end of the first movie, and Hewitt and Prinze return. This time, "the Fisherman" follows a friend group—including new additions Brandy and Mekhi Phifer—on their trip to the Bahamas. Gore ensues.

The third movie in the franchise is a standalone sequel, meaning it does include any of the cast from the other two movies and the story is separate, too. This time, a group decides to keep the accidental death of one of their friends secret, because their town believes that he was killed by "the Fisherman." Of course, the real "Fisherman" killer then comes after them. The cast of this movie includes Brooke Levin, David Paetkau, Ben Easter, and Torrey DeVitto.

A TV series adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2021. (By the way, everything in the franchise is based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan.) The show lasted for one season and starred Madison Iseman, Bill Heck, and Brianne Tju. It follows a friend group who cover up a death of one of the friends' twin sister.

This brings us to the newest movie, which has the same title as the original and the same premise. This time, though, the group at the center of the story have past "Fisherman" killer history to look back on and can seek advice from Hewitt and Prinze's characters. The new stars include Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, and Jonah Hauer-King.

John Cena-Priyanka Chopra's ‘Heads Of State' Among Prime Video's Top Films

Indian star Priyanka Chopra Jonas is elated that Amazon Prime Video's new original movie, Heads of State, is now the fourth most-watched film ever on the platform. A press release from Prime Video announced that the film garnered 75 million views worldwide. Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, Nobody), the film features Chopra along with John Cena and Idribs Elba in lead roles. The film released on July 2 and remained among the top most-viewed films worldwide on Prime Video for four weeks. Priyanka Chopra Jonas-John Cena-Idris Elba's Heads of State garners 75 million+ views In its debut week, Heads of State secured the fifth spot on Nielsen's Movie chart, clocking 1.098 billion minutes streamed in the USA. Lead actors John Cena and Priyanka Chopra Jonas expressed their gratitude towards the audience soon after the viewership announcement on social media. According to Flixpatrol, Heads of State was among the top ten most-viewed films worldwide for a month on Amazon Prime Video. Cena plays the US president, and Elba is the prime minister of the UK while Chopra is an MI6 agent in the film. The film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Heads of State also features Stephen Root, Paddy Considine, Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid and Sarah Niles. The action comedy is streaming on Prime Video in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages. In India, Heads of State was the fifth most-watched film online in its debut week, Ormax Media recorded 1.7 million views in India for the film in the week ending July 6. The next week, it doubled the Indian viewership and climbed to fourth spot on the list. In its third week, Heads of State slid back to fifth position on the list. Heads of State is an action fictional comedy that shows a US President and the UK Prime Minister who need to thwart a global conspiracy to save the world, and they must set aside their rivalry to do so. Their close ally in the mission is the brilliant MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Chopra). The president and the prime minister have a lot going on - the latter doesn't appreciate the fact that the former was elected as the head of his country because he was a huge Hollywood star. As heads of two countries majorly deciding the course of most global actions, they must be seen as allies. Despite their differences, they must appear to agree on important ideologies and steps. Both the actors offer a charming camaraderie in the process. They are playful and cheerful, yet authoritative. Chopra adds an interesting twist to the equation. She brings the agility and expertise of a secret agent while keeping it curtly passionate with her ex. The film is a fun-filled action ride which offers adrenaline-rush in the action sequences and lighthearted comedy in others. It also pushes political commentary with subtlety, making it possible for the audience to thoroughly enjoy the movie even if they are not aware of the politics. Earlier in July, Heads of State director Naishuller hinted at the possibility of having a sequel. In an interview with Screenrant, Naishuller said creating more of 'Jack and Marty' would be fun, if people enjoy the movie, and Amazon "feels like it makes sense to do a second one". The 2024 Christmas action comedy Red One ranks on top of the list of most-watched films worldwide on Prime Video ever. The film features Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in lead roles and is directed by Jake Kasdan. Ben Affleck-starrer The Accountant 2 is the second most-watched Amazon MGM movie on the platform, with 80 million global views. It was directed by Gavin O'Connor. The Tomorrow War ranks third on the list, right above Heads of State, Deadline reports.

Michael Mann's 'Heat 2' Faces Pushback From WB

Michael Mann's 1995 crime drama Heat has been considered one of his greatest cinematic achievements. In 2022, he followed up the film with a novel titled Heat 2 . Soon after, plans for a feature film adaptation were announced, though it looks like Heat 2 is now facing pushback from Warner Bros. This is unfortunate news as there seemed to be some promising developments regarding Heat 2 in recent years. According to insider Matt Belloni, however, things have been slowing down due to the high budget Mann is asking for. The original film was made for $60 million, and now for its sequel Mann is said to have asked for more than $200 million before bringing his price down to $170 million. Of course, $170 million is still an incredibly high figure, and that's what has Warner Bros. co-CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy in a bind. While the situation is complicated, especially because they'd love to greenlight Heat 2 , there could be a few possibilities that ensure the sequel happens. For starters, as further shared by Belloni via Puck, it looks like Warner Bros. is interested in partnering with Apple to fund the movie. This is certainly one positive development, though what would absolutely increase the likelihood of Heat 2 finally hitting the big screen would be the involvement of one major A-list star. According to the publication, Mann has had 'conversations' with Leonardo DiCaprio, and if DiCaprio were to get involved, it would almost certainly get Heat 2 the greenlight. It's still unclear who DiCaprio would play in the film, though a young version of McCauley is one of the most suspected parts. Either way, it would be exciting to see Mann and DiCaprio collaborate on the project, and it's easy to see why that could be an instrumental factor in getting the movie funded. It's worth noting that Mann's novel Heat 2 is both a prequel and sequel to his original hit. This makes for a rather ambitious storyline, one that will have to balance narratives in both the past and future, but Mann is certainly up for the challenge – especially if he can get his desired budget and stars attached. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Heat 2 and the potential involvement of Apple or Leonardo DiCaprio as we have them. Whatever happens with the film project, at least fans will still have the excellent novel to see the full picture.
