In a major drug bust, narcotics worth over Rs 36 crore were seized from a Nigerian woman at the Panvel Railway station Friday.
The drugs were seized in a joint operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Panvel, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Bengaluru, and the Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) Kurla, Mumbai.
The crackdown took place after NCB tipped off authorities about a possible smuggling attempt on the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Express train which was scheduled to arrive at Panvel Railway Station on Friday. Responding to the information, a team was quickly formed.
As the train reached platform number 7, the team found the Nigerian woman, who identified herself as Etumudon Doris and was travelling with an infant whom she claimed was her child.
Upon questioning, the officials said, the woman confessed to being in possession of the narcotics.
The team took her to the RPF post, where they found two rectangular black packages labeled 'VINTAGE' in her multicoloured travel bag.
When tested, the substance inside both packages was confirmed to be cocaine, together weighing 2.002 kg. They also seized methamphetamine, weighing 1.488 kg from her.
Murari Lal, Jr. Intelligence Officer, NCB Bengaluru, officially took custody of the seized narcotics. The woman has been booked in connection with the seizure and further probe is underway.

Punjab Cop Caught Smoking Heroin On Camera, Transferred

Chandigarh: A video of a member of the Punjab police taking drugs surfaced today and is being widely circulated online, bringing home how deep the state's drug menace has spread its tentacles. The policeman has been identified and action has been taken against him. The video shows the policeman sitting on a cot and inhaling heroin. A second person present appears to be filming him. Sources said Pravin Kumar is the gunman of a senior political leader based in Hoshiarpur. The Special Superintendent of Police, Hoshiarpur, told NDTV, "We have immediately transferred him from security duty to police lines. We have also initiated departmental action against him". "We have started further investigation into this matter. Preliminary investigation revealed that he got admitted in a de-addiction centre by his family. The police are working on various angles to get this video investigated," he added. The battle against drugs have been on for nearly two decades in Punjab during which all the key political parties in the state had a turn at the governance but the menace has continued unabated. The parties have been pointing fingers at each other for failing to control the proliferation of drugs. Under the current "Yudh Nashian Virudh" anti-drugs campaign, since March 1, 13,665 FIRs have been registered, 18,424 arrests made, and 900 kg heroin, 332 kg opium, 13 kg charas, 6 kg Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice) and Rs 11.5 crore drug money seized. Over the last years, the police have focused on end users - the victims of addiction -- and have been sending them to de-addiction centres instead of jail. Reports say more than 10,000 users have been persuaded to enter residential rehabilitation programmes or register with OOAT (Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment) clinics.

ED Raids 6 Sites In Hyderabad Over Rs 621 Crore Scam Linked To Highway Project

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted searches across six locations in Hyderabad in connection with a Rs 621-crore bank-fraud case against the promoters and directors of a company and its associate firms. The investigation was based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against SEW LSY Highways Limited and others for allegedly siphoning off loan funds, cheating, and criminal misconduct, resulting in the loss of public money, the probe agency said in a statement. The raids targeted SEW Infrastructure Limited (SIL), Prasad & Company (Project Works) Private Limited (PSPWPL), their group firms, and directors, the ED said. SEW LSY Highways Limited was incorporated as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the execution of a highway project assigned by the Uttar Pradesh State Highway Authority to a consortium of SIL and PSPWPL. The project was backed by a Rs 1,700-crore term loan from a consortium of 14 banks led by Punjab National Bank, of which Rs 603.68 crore was disbursed. The ED's probe revealed a complex scheme of intra-group sub-contracting where work was passed on at successively lower values, primarily through SEW Transport Networks Ltd (STNL) and then to PSPWPL. It alleged that part of the loan funds was diverted to PSPWPL, which then infused these funds back as the promoters' contribution, violating loan conditions. "However, the project was not completed and the term loan became a non-performing asset, resulting in an outstanding amount of Rs 621.78 crore to the banks," the ED said. Additionally, 33 bank accounts belonging to SEW Infrastructure Limited, as well as their directors and relatives were frozen during the search operations. SEW Infrastructure Ltd. was founded in 1983 by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao and is based in Hyderabad.
