Twin tragedy: Dad's grief as 4yo is crushed to death at school birthday party
Alice Brasil Souza da Paz was celebrating her birthday with classmates at a school in northeastern Brazil when the tragic accident unfolded on Tuesday last week.
The twins' parents stayed for part of the celebration at CEV school in Teresina.
A few hours later, while they were at work, the parents said a teacher called to tell them Alice had been in an accident.
'This past Tuesday, we arrived in the morning with our daughter, alive and healthy, to celebrate with her school friends the birthday she shared with her brother,' Alice's mum Dayana Brasil said.
'After the celebration, we said goodbye to our children and went to work.
'A few hours later, we were called and received the news that she had died at school.'
Police said the accident occurred in the school playroom after another child crawled under a dressing table, causing it to topple over onto Alice, who was lying nearby.
Her twin brother witnessed the tragedy.
The school said it was fully co-operating with the investigation.
Alice's dad Claudio Sousa said the family have heard different explanations from the school and still did not understand what happened.
He said they were told at first that a toy had fallen on the child.
The family described the trauma of burying Alice the following day, which happened to also be her dad's birthday.
'My gift was to bury my daughter,' he said.
'We lost our daughter in the place where she should have been safe and protected.
'We don't want revenge. We want justice so that no other child goes through what our Alice went through.'
The parents said they were deeply worried about the trauma their son, Arthur, has been through, both in witnessing the accident and losing his inseparable twin sister.
'How am I supposed to explain to a four-year-old that his sister, who shared everything with him since the womb of my beloved wife, is gone?' Mr Sousa said.
'He saw it all, witnessing a scene no child or person should ever have to see.'
The school has suspended all activities for the week and released a statement expressing its condolences.
It added psychological support is being offered to families, staff and the wider school community.
The case is being investigated by the Brazil's Child and Adolescent Protection Unit.

Tragic clues to Sydney couple's double death from CBD overpass
A couple who were found dead beneath an overpass in Sydney's CBD had been unsuccessful in trying to have a baby and has previously threatened to self-harm, according to reports. Angela Nesbitt and Steven Dash were found by emergency services on Harbour St in under the A4 Western Distributor overpass about 9.45am on Saturday. The cause of death is suspected to be a double suicide. The married couple believed to be in their 40s had both died before emergency services arrived. A picture has emerged of the tragic last hours of the couple, from Sydney's' south, before their death. At around 8.55am the same day, Ms Nesbitt and Mr Dash, who were married in 2022, were asked to leave Sydney's Star casino. Security guards were concerned by their 'erratic' behaviour, reported The Daily Telegraph. A comment was allegedly made about self-harming to security, who then contacted police who were trying to locate the pair when the tragedy unfolded. It's not known how the couple went from The Star to Harbour Street but it would only have been about a 20 minute walk. The couple were struggling to have a baby and were on multiple online surrogacy and fertility forums. Around Christmas 2023, the couple posted a smiling picture of themselves and stated that they were 'looking for an egg done range'. A single round of IVF can cost up to $15,000. The average patient usually requires a minimum of three rounds of IVF treatment, with a total cost approaching $50,000. Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph has published reports that police responded to an incident in 2024 when the couple threatened to self-harm while inside Sydney's historic Queen Victoria Building shopping arcade. 'They are known to have a history of mental health issues,' a police source told the newspaper. NSW Police said in a statement the deaths were not being treated as suspicious. 'Following extensive inquiries – and the availability of mobile phone and CCTV footage – investigators have established there are no suspicious circumstances,' the force said in a statement. However police would still be looking into what led up to the couple's death and if they had been gambling.

Man takes own life outside Queensland childcare centre
A community is reeling after a man took his own life outside a Queensland childcare centre, where six children were awaiting pickup by their parents. Emergency services were called to a disturbance at Habitat Early Learning centre in Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast around 6pm on Monday. On arrival, police said they had located a 28-year-old man who had forced entry to the premises, was self-harming, and sustained serious injuries as a result. 'Officers attempted to negotiate with the man before taking him into custody,' a police spokesman said. 'The man became unresponsive soon after. 'Attending police rendered first aid before other emergency services arrived, however he was declared dead a short time later.' The man's death is currently being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and could be looked into by the Crime and Corruption Commission. A spokesman for the childcare centre told the Courier Mail six children were inside the premises at the time, alongside five staff. 'The offender was unable to gain immediate access to the centre due to security measures including fingerprint scanners, and this allowed our staff the time to follow their safety protocols and hide everyone in a secure location,' they said. 'The offender was not known to any staff or our families. 'None of the children witnessed the offender after his initial attempts to enter the building.' Queensland Education minister John Paul Langbroek, when asked about the event at an unrelated press conference shortly after, declared it was 'a horrendous issue that I've only just been advised of'. 'I'm sure that for many of those students and teachers, it's a particularly traumatic experience they've gone through,' he said. 'I think those early childhood teachers and educators are heroes, and any counselling service that is needed will be provided, but the safety of our children is paramount.' Father and son's final moments have been captured on CCTV before they are killed by an alleged drink driver
The final moments of a father and son on their way to buy ice cream have been captured on CCTV before they were struck down and killed by an alleged drink driver. Braiden Timmins, 33, was walking behind his son Hendrix-hemi Te Rongomau King, 4, as he rode his bike to a 7-Eleven near their Logan home south of Brisbane. CCTV obtained by the Courier Mail captured the pair's last moments together before a white ute struck hit them on Greens Rd at Regents Park about 11am on Sunday. Neighbour Derek O'Malley saw the pair as they left their home shortly before the tragedy. He told media that Mr Timmins called out they were on their way to get an ice cream as they walked past his house. 'He was holding his hand, his son was on his bike. He would let him go a bit and then hold his hand. They were doing their father and son thing,' he said. 'It's still hard to believe that they're gone. 'Braiden was such a lovely bloke. He would do anything for you.' Driver Trevor William Galbraith, 41, from Regents Park, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter. Police allege Mr Galbraith returned a positive roadside breath test following the fatal crash. He appeared in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday where he was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on October 20.
