Zambry: SOPs for student-hired buses to be reviewed after fatal crash

IPOH: Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for student-hired buses and safety protocols will be reviewed following the tragic crash that claimed 15 lives early this morning.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the government would entrust the relevant ministries with conducting a comprehensive investigation to ensure that safety guidelines were upheld and such incidents are not repeated.
"At this point, there is no need to discuss the details. I have spoken to Transport Minister Anthony Loke this morning.
"We will leave it to his ministry to conduct a thorough investigation. It is too early for any speculation.
"In this moment of sorrow, let us all pray for the swift recovery of the injured. For those who have passed, may they be placed among the righteous," he told reporters at the Forensic Unit of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here today.
Zambry said the Higher Education, Education, and Health ministries were working in close coordination to provide immediate aid to victims and their families.
"Immediate steps have been taken. We have arranged all essential support, including hearses to transport the remains to their respective hometowns.
"Financial assistance has also been extended, including RM2,000 from the Higher Education Ministry and RM1,000 from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) to assist with funeral arrangements.
"Additional support, such as burial aid, insurance coverage, zakat contributions, and accident compensation, will also be managed by UPSI," he said.
Zambry described the situation as heartbreaking, especially as the nation had lost individuals who held immense potential.
"We hope that all families involved will remain strong and composed in facing this profound loss.
"The Health Ministry will continue to update us on the condition of the injured victims and their recovery," he added.
Zambry also conveyed his deepest condolences to all affected families, saying that detailed investigations would continue throughout the day to ensure all angles were considered.
He called on the public to give the authorities the space and time needed to complete their work, and to stand in solidarity with the grieving families during this difficult time.
Earlier, it was reported that the bus involved in the accident — which carried UPSI students — was not chartered by the university.
UPSI vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff confirmed that the students were returning to campus in Tanjung Malim from their hometown in Terengganu after the Hari Raya Aidiladha break.
"The bus was privately hired by the students. It was not an official university vehicle, nor was it operated under UPSI's management," he said.

More than 20 asnaf families receive korban meat for Aidiladha from LAKMM

Ariffin (left) gives away a pack of 'korban' meat to a household head. MIRI (June 9): The 'korban' (sacrificial slaughter) programme carried out by the Miri Malay Charitable Trust Board (LAKMM) for this year's Hari Raya Aidiladha benefitted 23 'asnaf' here. Held at the outdoor grounds of Surau Al Hidayah Tab Cinaq in Pujut 5 here, the slaughtering of the cattle, the butchering, as well as the packing and distribution of the sacrificial meat, were conducted via 'gotong-royong' (work party) involving the LAKMM committee members and also the local volunteers. 'The recipients of the 'korban' meat include the 'asnaf' families from Pujut, Kampung Wireless, Kampung Muhibbah in Kuala Baram, as well as those listed by Perkim (Malaysian Muslim Welfare Organisation),' said the board in a statement. In Islam, asnaf is a group of people who are eligible for tithe and other welfare aid in view of their underprivileged status. Adding on, LAKMM said adding significance to the occasion, Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad represented the oganiser in handing over the 'korban' meat to the recipients. Also present last Sunday were LAKMM board of trustees representatives Julaihi Mohamad and Penghulu Samad Ali. 'The programme not only aims to strengthen the community ties, but it also reflects compassion and care for the underprivileged groups during one of the most meaningful celebrations in the Islamic calendar,' added LAKMM.

Sombre atmosphere at hospital as families mourn bus accident victims

IPOH: A sombre atmosphere enveloped the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital mortuary as family members gathered to mourn those who perished in the tragic accident on the East-West Highway. With each passing truck bringing the remains of their loved ones, cries and wails were heard as some family members sobbed uncontrollably. Media personnel were not allowed within the mortuary compound and could only witness the scene from a distance. Fourteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and one bus attendant were killed in the accident on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, on Monday (June 9) at about 1am. The bus carrying 42 students overturned while another car with four occupants veered into a ditch. Mohd Alif Nasnawi, 21, said he had tried to contact two friends who were on the bus since early morning. The agricultural science students said his friends, Muhd Adib Hazim Halim and Norayuni Maslan, both 21 and from Terengganu, were supposed to arrive at their campus at about 5am. "After hearing about the accident, I tried calling their mobile phones numerous times, but there was no answer. I was anxious, and my heart broke when I heard the devastating news that they didn't make it," he said. "I last spoke to Adib on Friday. I had asked him about buying a shirt for one of our courses. He's usually quiet, only speaking when necessary," he added. Alif said it is common for university students, especially those from Kelantan and Terengganu, to charter buses when returning to campus. "It's normal, especially after holidays," he added. When met by reporters, Saarani said support would be available for the affected families. "I believe this tragedy will leave a lasting impact on them," he said. UPSI has counselling services available, and I hope they find some comfort and strength in accepting this as part of Allah's will," he added. Saarani also said that the state government would allocate RM1,000 to each affected family. "The financial aid is small, but we hope it helps cover basic needs, such as accommodation, food, or other expenses. "We know not every family is financially well-off, and this is the least we can do to ease their burden," he said, thanking the police for ensuring the victims' remains would be returned to their respective homes. "That's all from me," he said quietly, his voice heavy with emotion.

8.1 Tonnes of Sacrificial Meat Distributed to 1,200 in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG: A total of 8.1 tonnes of sacrificial meat was distributed to 1,200 asnaf (tithe recipients) and low-income families in the Gua Musang area in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, said Galas state assemblyman Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim. He said that 27 cows, donated by various parties, were slaughtered in stages, starting at 7 am. 'Alhamdulillah, the amount of sacrificial meat distributed is significantly higher this year compared to last year, which involved only five cows. 'This allows more recipients to benefit, especially those in the Galas state constituency,' he told reporters today at the distribution ceremony in Bandar Baru. According to Mohd Syahbuddin, the programme was held in collaboration with Yayasan Kebajikan Asnaf Malaysia, the Gua Musang neighbourhood watch, and the Galas State Assemblyman Service Centre.
