Govt to review SOPs for bus rentals, Zambry says after Gerik crash

Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said his ministry and the education and health ministries are working closely to channel immediate aid to the victims and their families. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The standard operating procedures (SOPs) for bus rentals by students and safety measures will be reviewed following the accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students this morning. Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said the government would leave it to the transport ministry to investigate the incident for compliance with safety guidelines and procedures. 'I have discussed this with transport minister Loke Siew Fook. We will leave it to his ministry to conduct a follow-up investigation,' Berita Harian reported him as telling reporters at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, Perak, today. Zambry said his ministry and the education and health ministries were working closely to give immediate aid to the victims and their families. 'Immediate action is being taken, and all the basics are being prepared, including hearses for the bodies. 'Aid is being given to the affected families, including RM2,000 from the higher education ministry and RM1,000 each from UPSI for the management of the remains. 'Additional aid such as funeral aid, insurance, zakat, and accident compensation will be handled by UPSI,' he said. The accident took place on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. It is understood that the bus had been travelling from Jerteh, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak. A total of 48 victims were involved: 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant, and a married couple along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, who were in the MPV. Thirteen of the UPSI students died at the scene and two at the hospital.

Zambry: SOPs for student-hired buses to be reviewed after fatal crash

IPOH: Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for student-hired buses and safety protocols will be reviewed following the tragic crash that claimed 15 lives early this morning. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the government would entrust the relevant ministries with conducting a comprehensive investigation to ensure that safety guidelines were upheld and such incidents are not repeated. "At this point, there is no need to discuss the details. I have spoken to Transport Minister Anthony Loke this morning. "We will leave it to his ministry to conduct a thorough investigation. It is too early for any speculation. "In this moment of sorrow, let us all pray for the swift recovery of the injured. For those who have passed, may they be placed among the righteous," he told reporters at the Forensic Unit of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here today. Zambry said the Higher Education, Education, and Health ministries were working in close coordination to provide immediate aid to victims and their families. "Immediate steps have been taken. We have arranged all essential support, including hearses to transport the remains to their respective hometowns. "Financial assistance has also been extended, including RM2,000 from the Higher Education Ministry and RM1,000 from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) to assist with funeral arrangements. "Additional support, such as burial aid, insurance coverage, zakat contributions, and accident compensation, will also be managed by UPSI," he said. Zambry described the situation as heartbreaking, especially as the nation had lost individuals who held immense potential. "We hope that all families involved will remain strong and composed in facing this profound loss. "The Health Ministry will continue to update us on the condition of the injured victims and their recovery," he added. Zambry also conveyed his deepest condolences to all affected families, saying that detailed investigations would continue throughout the day to ensure all angles were considered. He called on the public to give the authorities the space and time needed to complete their work, and to stand in solidarity with the grieving families during this difficult time. Earlier, it was reported that the bus involved in the accident — which carried UPSI students — was not chartered by the university. UPSI vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff confirmed that the students were returning to campus in Tanjung Malim from their hometown in Terengganu after the Hari Raya Aidiladha break. "The bus was privately hired by the students. It was not an official university vehicle, nor was it operated under UPSI's management," he said.

Deadly Gerik bus tragedy shakes nation, comes less than a month after fatal FRU crash

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation was shaken once again in the early hours today by a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The fatal crash occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was traveling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan to Gerik. This heartbreaking tragedy comes less than a month after a fatal crash on May 13, which claimed the lives of nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, Perak. According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus rear-ended the Alza, causing the bus to overturn and the MPV to veer into a roadside ditch. A total of 48 victims were accounted for, including 13 who perished at the scene and were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, and two others who succumbed to their injuries at Gerik Hospital. Seven more victims were admitted to the red zone (critical condition), 20 to the yellow zone (semi-critical), and six to the green zone (minor injuries) at Gerik Hospital. At press time, authorities have yet to release an official list of the deceased or injured victims. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, in a Facebook post, announced that UPSI has established an operations room and hotline. Accommodation assistance for the victims' families is also being coordinated with Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Ipoh and the Gerik Community College. UPSI vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said that the university has assigned one staff member to each affected family to ensure that all next of kin receive appropriate assistance. For the record, fatal bus accidents have plagued Malaysian roads for years. On Dec 24, 2016, a total of 14 people were killed and 16 were injured when an express bus plunged 20 feet into a ravine at KM137 of the North-South Expressway near Kampung Jayo, Muar, Johor. Malaysia's worst recorded bus accident occurred on Aug 21, 2013, when 37 people, including the driver, died and 16 were injured after a bus carrying 52 passengers plunged 60 meters into a ravine at KM3.6 of Jalan Genting Highlands-Kuala Lumpur.
