BUENOS AIRES : River Plate completed the first phase of the Argentine Primera Division Apertura tournament as runners-up in Group B with a commanding 4-1 home win over Velez Sarsfield today, setting up a last 16 clash with Barracas Central.
River's victory at the Mas Monumental stadium left them second in Group B on 31 points, four behind leaders Rosario Central.
They advanced to the second phase and round of 16, where they will face Barracas, who finished seventh in Group A.
Sebastian Driussi opened the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute, capitalising on a save that fell into his path after Franco Mastantuono's shot was blocked.
Facundo Colidio doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a dazzling run beating the Velez defence before finishing with aplomb.
The third came five minutes later when goalkeeper Randall Rodriguez failed to hold Mastantuono's shot and the youngster managed to recover the ball to set up Ignacio Fernandez for a fine finish.
Velez threatened briefly before halftime when Maher Carrizo reduced the deficit with a clinical finish after latching onto Agustin Bouzat's incisive through ball on the counter-attack.
In the second half, a heavy downpour did nothing to dampen the spirits of the thousands of home fans who sang their hearts out.
River coach Marcelo Gallardo said he was pleased with the match and the result.
'I really liked the first half, but then I think we didn't settle into the game in the second,' Gallardo said after the game.
'Velez pressed us more and, with some mistakes, we put ourselves under more pressure. Then with the rain, the match played out in a way where we didn't suffer too much but didn't create much either. What we did in the first half justified today's win.'
The visitors defended well, with goalkeeper Rodriguez making amends by denying Fabrizio Bustos and Mastantuono, and they even went close to adding a second through Elias Gomez and Thiago Silvero.
Gallardo's men maintained their intensity and sealed victory late on when Miguel Borja converted from the spot after Manuel Lanzini was fouled by Valentin Gomez, who was shown a red card.
Velez finished 13th with no chance of qualifying for the second phase.

Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain after Son's departure

CRISTIAN Romero has been confirmed as Tottenham Hotspur's new captain following the departure of Son Heung-min. The Argentine defender takes over the armband after Son's move to LAFC earlier this month. Son had captained Spurs for the past two seasons, including their Europa League triumph in May. Romero served as vice-captain during that period and led the team in the Europa League final before Son's introduction. The 27-year-old will make his debut as permanent skipper in Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain. New manager Thomas Frank revealed the decision on Tottenham's official website. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank stated. The Danish coach praised Romero's leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it,' Frank added about Romero's reaction. The centre-back joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad. Frank emphasised Romero's ability to drive the team forward through his performances and attitude. The appointment comes as Spurs prepare for their first competitive match of the 2025-26 season. Romero's first test as permanent captain will be against European champions PSG in Helsinki. - AFP

Toronto champion Shelton to start Cincy against Argentine outsider

CINCINNATI: Newly minted Toronto Masters champion Ben Shelton will open his account at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open against Camilo Ugo Carabelli after the Argentine defeated Kei Nishikori 7-5, 6-3 on Friday. World number seven Shelton arrived in the American Midwest on a private jet after winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto on Thursday night and will make his start after a first-round bye in the final major tune-up before the US Open begins on August 25. The 47th-ranked Ugo Carabelli dominated 2014 US Open finalist Nishikori as the former top Asian in tennis succumbed to 42 unforced errors and lost serve five times. The Japanese player was competing for the first time since retiring injured at Geneva in mid-May. Ugo Carabelli has played his best on clay, reaching four semi-finals on the dirt this season. As Cincinnati fifth seed and with confidence still strong, the 22-year-old Shelton could be a formidable contender for a pre-Open title double. "I hope that this (Toronto) week kick starts me and gets me more consistent with the type of tennis that I want to play day-in and day-out," he said in Canada. "It's certainly going to push me to work harder. I feel like I have a good grasp now on the things that really work for me against guys who are playing some of the best tennis in the world, and the things that I need to continue to work on." Back-to-back events running 12 days each might be a fitness wild card as the bloated schedules of the ATP-WTA tournaments become commonplace. Fellow top 10 players including Novak Djokovic – who is skipping Cincinnati – Alex de Minaur and world number one Jannik Sinner have all come out in favor of the old school one-week tournament format. Borna Coric, who was ranked 152nd when he won the title in 2022, fell at the first hurdle, a 6-3, 7-5 victim of American qualifier Emilio Nava. Coric has lost all six of his ATP-level matches in 2025, winning his last in December at the United Cup in Australia. In WTA action, Caroline Garcia, the former top 10 player from France who has plans to retire this year, played for the first time since Roland Garros in May and beat Briton Sonay Kartal 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. After needing more than two hours to prevail in a roller-coaster match, Garcia admitted that as she battled in the sweltering heat she had moments when she wondered why. "For a couple of minutes that was going on in my head," she said. "It was so hot, so tough out there, I didn't play a lot of matches in the last couple of months. At the end of the first set I was exhausted. "I felt like I let my opportunity go away, and it was a long way to the end of the match. "But for some reason I got a lot of support from my team and the people here, and I wanted to try to the end," added Garcia, who has a wild card for the US Open, which will be her last tournament. French compatriot Leolia Jeanjean also advanced with 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win over Yulia Starodubtseva.

Simeone's Atletico empire under scrutiny after trophy drought

MADRID: Diego Simeone's once untouchable reign at Atletico Madrid faces its biggest crisis as the club great starts his 14th season amid mounting pressure after four trophy-less campaigns and a growing disconnect between his measured ambitions and the board's aims. The Argentine transformed Atletico from a lowly, struggling team in the south side of the Spanish capital into a European powerhouse, reaching two Champions League finals in three years with a relentless, physically imposing defensive style that left richer clubs with stellar squads struggling to cope. However, since winning their 11th LaLiga title in 2021, Simeone has failed to deliver silverware while preaching that Atletico's main objective is not winning titles but finishing in the top three in LaLiga, claiming they cannot compete financially with Barcelona and Real Madrid. That discourse has become a tough pill to swallow for fans and pundits as Atletico keep spending big money every season. They bought Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth, Robin Le Normand and Conor Gallagher in deals reaching nearly 200 million euros (US$232.54 million) last year followed by Alex Baena, David Hancko, Johnny Cardozo and Thiago Almada for over 150 million this term. Those signings have joined a squad of established players like Antoine Griezmann, Nahuel Molina, Jan Oblak, Marcos Alonso, Jose Maria Gimenez and Koke, making Simeone's modest objectives more and more disconnected from reality. Club owner Miguel Angel Gil Marin last week delivered a message that directly contradicts Simeone's cautious approach. "We firmly believe that we are building a squad to dream big. We are ambitious, we take risks, we have brought in and will continue to bring in new partners willing to invest capital, which is necessary to continue growing in sporting, social and infrastructure terms," he said. Atletico's disappointing early group stage exit at the highly-profitable Club World Cup provided the latest setback, with a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Paris St Germain exposing familiar weaknesses including frail defending against wide players and lack of creativity in the final third. Critics and fans are questioning whether Europe's highest-paid manager can still inspire a squad that has stagnated in both domestic and European competition, with mounting challenges ahead to reclaim their status as contenders on all fronts. Atletico start their LaLiga challenge at Espanyol on Aug 17.
