River Plate secure second spot in Group B with 4-1 win over Velez
BUENOS AIRES : River Plate completed the first phase of the Argentine Primera Division Apertura tournament as runners-up in Group B with a commanding 4-1 home win over Velez Sarsfield today, setting up a last 16 clash with Barracas Central.
River's victory at the Mas Monumental stadium left them second in Group B on 31 points, four behind leaders Rosario Central.
They advanced to the second phase and round of 16, where they will face Barracas, who finished seventh in Group A.
Sebastian Driussi opened the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute, capitalising on a save that fell into his path after Franco Mastantuono's shot was blocked.
Facundo Colidio doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a dazzling run beating the Velez defence before finishing with aplomb.
The third came five minutes later when goalkeeper Randall Rodriguez failed to hold Mastantuono's shot and the youngster managed to recover the ball to set up Ignacio Fernandez for a fine finish.
Velez threatened briefly before halftime when Maher Carrizo reduced the deficit with a clinical finish after latching onto Agustin Bouzat's incisive through ball on the counter-attack.
In the second half, a heavy downpour did nothing to dampen the spirits of the thousands of home fans who sang their hearts out.
River coach Marcelo Gallardo said he was pleased with the match and the result.
'I really liked the first half, but then I think we didn't settle into the game in the second,' Gallardo said after the game.
'Velez pressed us more and, with some mistakes, we put ourselves under more pressure. Then with the rain, the match played out in a way where we didn't suffer too much but didn't create much either. What we did in the first half justified today's win.'
The visitors defended well, with goalkeeper Rodriguez making amends by denying Fabrizio Bustos and Mastantuono, and they even went close to adding a second through Elias Gomez and Thiago Silvero.
Gallardo's men maintained their intensity and sealed victory late on when Miguel Borja converted from the spot after Manuel Lanzini was fouled by Valentin Gomez, who was shown a red card.
Velez finished 13th with no chance of qualifying for the second phase.

Toronto champion Shelton to start Cincy against Argentine outsider
CINCINNATI: Newly minted Toronto Masters champion Ben Shelton will open his account at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open against Camilo Ugo Carabelli after the Argentine defeated Kei Nishikori 7-5, 6-3 on Friday. World number seven Shelton arrived in the American Midwest on a private jet after winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto on Thursday night and will make his start after a first-round bye in the final major tune-up before the US Open begins on August 25. The 47th-ranked Ugo Carabelli dominated 2014 US Open finalist Nishikori as the former top Asian in tennis succumbed to 42 unforced errors and lost serve five times. The Japanese player was competing for the first time since retiring injured at Geneva in mid-May. Ugo Carabelli has played his best on clay, reaching four semi-finals on the dirt this season. Simeone's Atletico empire under scrutiny after trophy drought
MADRID: Diego Simeone's once untouchable reign at Atletico Madrid faces its biggest crisis as the club great starts his 14th season amid mounting pressure after four trophy-less campaigns and a growing disconnect between his measured ambitions and the board's aims. The Argentine transformed Atletico from a lowly, struggling team in the south side of the Spanish capital into a European powerhouse, reaching two Champions League finals in three years with a relentless, physically imposing defensive style that left richer clubs with stellar squads struggling to cope. However, since winning their 11th LaLiga title in 2021, Simeone has failed to deliver silverware while preaching that Atletico's main objective is not winning titles but finishing in the top three in LaLiga, claiming they cannot compete financially with Barcelona and Real Madrid. That discourse has become a tough pill to swallow for fans and pundits as Atletico keep spending big money every season.
