The Last Of Us star Kaitlyn Dever reveals the heartbreak behind her opening lines on the hit show as she reveals how Andrew Garfield helped her overcome the death of her mother

Daily Mail26-05-2025

From Bad Teacher to Booksmart and a tragic turn in TV drama Dopesick, Kaitlyn Dever 's acting career thus far has been nothing if not unconventional.
But art mirrored the more linear trajectory of life after the actress accepted a starring role in the second season of post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us.
Dever, 28, plays Abby Anderson, a soldier determined to avenge her father's violent death, in the hugely popular HBO show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay.
In one of her opening scenes with Pascal's Joel, Abby recalls finding her father's lifeless body shortly after he had taken his own life by shooting himself in the head.
And Dever admits she delivered those lines just three days after buying her real-life mother Kathy, who died at the age of 53 following a 14-year battle with metastatic breast cancer.

She told the latest issue of GQ Hype: 'I had just experienced [that]. Even though death is part of the human experience, we are not meant to be used to grief and watching your best friend die.
'So that was a crazy line to repeat over and over again because I had just seen her. She wasn't alive any more and I saw her body in the hospital.
'And that experience is gut-wrenching. Nothing will ever be as bad as that.'
Dever announced the death of her mother, a former professional ice skating coach, in an Instagram post shared in February 2024.
She has since endeavoured to accept the loss, and admits she wishes more people knew how to approach and talk to those experiencing grief.
'The people that lose someone actually want to be asked about the one that they lost, they really want you to ask as many questions,' she said.
'It's actually going to make me feel like her presence and her spirit is still here, and it keeps her alive, you know, her essence, like by talking about her and sharing stories about her.
'And I know that if I talk about it and share my experience it may help someone else in their experience.'
Dever watched her mother battle breast cancer for more than a decade before her death in 2024, and she admits fellow actor Andrew Garfield was a source of strength during those years.
Garfield had previously discussed the passing of his own mother during an emotional live interview with Stephen Colbert.
The actor was moved to tears after being broached on the subject of his mum Lynne Garfield's death to pancreatic cancer in 2019, but admitted he 'hopes the grief stays with me, because it's the unexpressed love that I never got to tell her.'
Recalling the impact of his words, Dever recalled: : 'I would Google it and watch it often, because I always felt like… the worst thing in my life that could happen was losing my best friend. And I always thought that I wouldn't be able to go on.
'But then I'd look at Andrew and think, well, his life seems to be moving forwards.'
Ice skating coach Kathy was also survived by her husband, Tim Dever - who memorably voiced Barney the Dinosaur from 2000-2002 - and their youngest daughters Mady and Jane.
'Thank you for fighting so hard for us for so long,' Dever shared shortly after her death. 'I am forever, forever, grateful for the special time we got to spend with you, sweet mama. It will never be enough.'
'I will be broken forever without you and I don't know how I'll go on. You were the greatest mom and wife anyone could ever ever ask for.
'I'm grateful that you gave me Mady, Jane, and Dad. We'll always have each other to lean on because of you.'
Dever compared her dearly departed mother to 'sunshine' itself because she 'warmed me when I needed it the most and made me smile [whenever] I was sad.'
'My mama. My life. My everything. I don't even have the words. Nothing I'll ever say will amount to the gifts you have given me in my life, the boundless joy you brought, the deep, endless, unconditional love you gave me and our family.'
She added: 'Your love was everywhere. It was in the morning having coffee with you and shopping on The RealReal. It was sitting out by the pool eating watermelon (with salt on it of course) and listening to Willie Nelson.
'It was laying in your bed with you watching Seinfeld and listening to your infectious laugh as you recited every line from memory.
'It was making fun of each other, it was getting to tell you about my day, it was getting the best advice from you anyone would be so lucky to [receive].
'It was going places with you, because no matter where we were, we were having fun and laughing.'

Scots Downton Abbey star: The US loves the show so much... for the cast it was just like Beatlemania!

She is one of the longest-serving actors in Downton Abbey and had a front row seat as the British TV show and its spin-off movies grew to become money-spinning hits. However, Scots actress Phyllis Logan has spoken of her shock at just how popular the period drama is in America, likening the reaction the cast got from audiences to 'Beatlemania'. The 69-year-old, who plays head housekeeper Mrs Hughes in the drama, even enjoyed a private meeting with Michelle Obama in the White House during her time as First Lady. Discussing the enduring popularity of the show as she prepares for the release of a third film in September that will bring the franchise to an end, Ms Logan told how the reaction in the US has always been 'amazing'. She said: 'It was so weird pitching up to places. It was like The Beatles had arrived and it was just us. 'In New York we used to go to this lovely theatre and all the people coming would dress as characters from the show and we would do a Q&A and a panel with the audience. But they would go absolutely crazy.' The first Downton Abbey movie, released in 2019, grossed £143 million worldwide, while its sequel Downton Abbey: A New Era took in £68 million. The TV series, first broadcast in the UK in 2010, is the most viewed drama in American broadcaster PBS's 55-year history. At the peak of its popularity, the show had a weekly average audience of 13.3 million viewers. On the cast's White House invitation to meet fan of the show Mrs Obama, Ms Logan said: 'That was incredible. 'There we were in this little side room and she came bounding in and gave us all a hug and just talked. 'We spoke for about ten minutes and got a photograph with her. 'She was just so charming and beautiful and elegant and enchanting and funny. She was just great. It was a real highlight.' Ms Logan is now enjoying her new starring role in the crime series Murder Most Puzzling. She plays the part of Cora Felton in the Channel 5 drama, which is based on the best- selling Puzzle Lady books by American author Parnell Hall. The story sees Cora drawn into a murder investigation due to her fame as a crossword compiler. Ms Logan reckons Cora is a departure from her previous roles. She said: 'She may not be very endearing but that's what I love about her. She couldn't give a s***. 'She has Bloody Marys for breakfast and smokes like a sailor.' Ms Logan added: 'Cora is quite witty and I like to think I have a certain amount of wit to myself. 'I'm not a standup but I've got a sense of humour.' It may be her first time playing a sleuth, but Ms Logan does have the honour of having starred in one of Scotland's most famous crime dramas – Taggart. She said: 'I was in Taggart, in fact I think I might have been in it twice as two different characters. I was certainly in it when Alex Norton was Taggart because we were supposed to be ex-lovers and he's an old mate so we had a laugh.'

Real Housewives boss dies during childbirth as newborn survives and two young children are left behind

Lauren Miller, an executive on Bravo's Real Housewives franchises, has tragically passed away during childbirth. Lauren died on June 9, just minutes after giving birth to her son Jackson. She worked on the New York City and Salt Lake City franchises of the popular reality TV series. 'It is with devastated hearts that we share that our beloved colleague, Lauren, died unexpectedly just moments after giving birth to her baby boy,' a statement on Shed Media's Instagram read on June 12. 'Lauren leaves behind her husband, Kevin, three-year-old daughter Emma and newborn son Jackson.' Lauren worked for Shed Media which produces the Real Housewives franchises. Lauren's husband Kevin Miller commented on the post. 'Lauren is the love of my life and I was blessed by God that she chose to spend her life with me and give me two beautiful children to remember her every minute of everyday. 'Please pray for our family and thank you all for the prayers, kind words and thoughts. God bless. ❤️ ' Several Housewives stars commented on Shed Media's post about her death. RHOC star Tamra Judge wrote, 'Prayers for her family & friends. This is absolutely heartbreaking.' Salt Lake City star Heather Gay added a broken heart emoji and New York City star Sai de Silva shared several crying emojis. Her co-workers also shared a link to a GoFundMe that has raised over $129,000. 'This unimaginable loss is impossible to comprehend and the hole that Lauren has left in this world and in her own family, is an impossible one to ever fill,' the GoFundMe stated. 'It is with devastated hearts that we share that our beloved colleague, Lauren, died unexpectedly just moments after giving birth to her baby boy,' a statement on Shed Media's Instagram read on June 12 'We are devastated for her beloved husband, Kevin, who must now unexpectedly take on the sole role of parenting their two children … Emma (3) and newborn Jackson, who is still in the NICU.' 'That the day Lauren was so eagerly awaiting should end in tragedy is truly unfathomable,' the GoFundMe reads in part. Alongside the message, the caption invited people to consider donating to Kevin, as he 'takes on this unexpected role as sole provider of the family.' The update concluded, 'Of all the things Lauren loved most, being a mother was at the top and ensuring that her children are being taken care of would mean everything to her.' After Lauren's death, baby Jackson was sent to the NICU and was released to his father on June 12. 'Kevin is delighted to share that baby Jackson is out of the NICU and at home with his dad and sister, a Thursday, June 12, update on the GoFundMe page stated. '[Kevin says that] he has been an angel and has eaten and slept like a champ. He is so alert and attentive already at just 4 days old.' Lauren was the Executive Assistant to the Senior Vice Presidents of Programming & Development and co-heads of the company, according to her LinkedIn. She had been in that position for nearly nine years. She also worked for Bunim Murray Productions and A&E Networks for around a year each. Lauren graduated from San Diego State in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in Journalism with a concentration in Media Studies. While in college, she interned at MTV.
