Why open schooling in demand in Karnataka now? Extra time to prepare for entrance exams

Time of Indiaa day ago

Bengaluru: Even while integrated coaching has become the norm to crack entrance exams, coaching centres in the city have identified a growing trend — students enrolling in National Institute of Open Schooling to focus exclusively on entrance tests.
Many students are opting for home-school in classes 11 and 12 and write board exams through NIOS to spend more time preparing for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) or National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Examination (NEET), both national-level tests that hold the key to the country's best professional colleges.
"We have an increased demand from parents to open NIOS study centre on campus, where we can train students for the boards on weekends and coach them for entrance exams during weekdays.
We have, therefore, decided to apply for an NIOS licence for the next year owing to the high demand," said Sridhar G, founder of Ace Creative Learning Pvt Ltd which runs Deeksha STEM schools.
"If you look at most of the exams now — NEET, for example — 60% of the people writing it are repeaters, and a large majority who get admission into medical colleges are repeaters. For those who are writing the exam for the first time along with the boards, the biggest handicap is that they do not have enough time to study to compete with others.
So, NIOS gives you the flexibility to spend more time on competitive exams since there is no need to spend mandatory hours in school," he added.
Mahesh Yadav, zonal head, South of Allen Career Institute Pvt Ltd, said: "We have a handful of students now. The trend has started growing in the city and will become the norm in the next two to three years. We are encouraging students, who are motivated to get good ranks, to take up NIOS.
Now, they spend the morning hours in school and evenings in coaching, leaving very little time for self-study."
A mother, who is also a school teacher, has decided to home-school her son for two years as he wants to crack NEET. "Around 24 lakh students took the test last year. With CBSE or ICSE curriculum, it will be too much for him to focus on the competitive exam. Open schooling could be better as it would give him more free time to prepare for NEET.
He will take up entrance coaching in the morning and evening and spend the rest of the time on self-study.
He is self-disciplined and has a drive to crack the test," she said.
Yet another attraction is the financial aspect. "We would also not be spending on school fees and could use the money for his higher education," she added.
V Swaminathan, regional director, NIOS, said there have been success stories of NIOS students cracking entrance tests. "There are several students who are attending coaching classes and parallelly pursuing class 11 and 12. We have students cracking into top institutes like IITs. Recently, the Supreme Court also said NIOS students are eligible for appearing for entrance exams, reaffirming its credibility," he said.

Gwalior farmer's son dies as plane crashes into hostel bldg

Bhopal: Among the dead in the plane crash near Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport involving a Dreamliner aircraft, AI 171 operated by Air India that claimed 242 lives on Friday were two residents from Madhya Pradesh- a woman from Indore who was on way to London celebrate her husband's birthday and a promising MBBS student from Gwalior, who was having lunch at the hostel mess when the ill-fated aircraft crashed into its building. The life of Aryan Kirar, 21, an MBBS student at BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad and the youngest son of a small farmer from Jigsaoli village in Gwalior district was cut short when the aircraft crashed into the hostel building while he was having lunch in mess on Thursday. The impact brought down parts of the structure, burying several students. Aryan was among those who could not be saved. The news about his death has left the entire village shattered. His father, Ramhet Singh Kirar, is a small farmer. The elder son, 24, helps him in the farm. But it was Aryan — brilliant, determined, and self-driven — who carried the hopes of the entire family. Without any formal coaching, he had scored good marks in the NEET exam and secured admission to BJ Medical College. "He was our only hope to change our fate," said a family member. "He dreamed of serving the people in our village." Aryan had visited home in May. He was cheerful, excited about college, and spoke often about the future he wanted to build — not just for himself, but for his family and community. In Jigsaoli, the grief is profound. Yet inside the Kirar household, an even more fragile silence prevails. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Barmer medicalstudent's life cut short in tragedy

Jaisalmer: Medical student Jaiprakash Choudhary (20), son of a farmer-labourer from Bor Charanan village in Barmer district, had overcome financial difficulties to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor. Fate, however, had other plans. His decision to eat lunch in the mess instead of joining his friends to buy mangoes proved fatal on Thursday, when Air India's London-bound flight crashed into the BJ Medical College building in Ahmedabad. Jaiprakash was headed to the mess kitchen when the burning plane's debris fell on him, leading to 30% burns. He succumbed on Friday. Moments earlier, he had spoken to his younger brother, Pratap. "He just wanted to serve our village people," said Pratap, fighting back tears. Jaiprakash's journey to medical college was a testament to his family's sacrifices. His father Dharmaram Choudhary, who is a farmer and also works in textile factories of Balotra, took loans to fund his coaching for NEET in Kota. The family's joys knew no bounds when Jaiprakash secured 675 marks in NEET, earning admission to BJ Medical College in 2023. "The entire village celebrated when he got selected. His mother's dream was to see him become a doctor. He was so close to fulfilling it," said his cousin Mangalaram. "His mother's dream was to see him become a doctor. He was so close to fulfilling it." The Choudhary family received the devastating news Thursday evening and rushed to Ahmedabad. They came to know that he was no more after reaching the city. The family returned to Barmer with his body for the funeral which was attended by many villagers Friday evening. The tragedy has left a sombre note on Bor Charanan village, where Jaiprakash was last seen during Op Sindoor when he had spent time with his family.
